Collected the 75 Threads and 5 Glowing Biles, did all the Thread combines no failures. Did the final combination with 167 Tailoring and 270 WIS, got the failure message and was returned the Fur Lined Shawl. Back to square one.
Trivial 115?

Tryed combine today :
115 in tailoring, with 132 WIS/119 INT
Successfull, and no trivial message, so triv may be exactly 115...
Info on eqtraders.com are VERY usefull to get the biles (turn your gamma to 0%, and hunt them outside, only greenies and lightblues at 51, so easy kills). Took me two sessions of wurms slaying, around 2 hours each time.
Spiders in Velks are very hard to solo at 51, so group there or ask to loot the threads... Peeps here where xping or farming velium, so I was the only one to want them.
By the way, farm the crystalline silks in there too, raised my tailoring from 107 to 115 in 35 combines (mask->108 and cap->115)...

Last trick :
You all traders know about the round number generator or something, this weird factor that can make you fail 15 trivials combines or make you get 10 skill increases in 12 comb?
Well, my experience shows that when you get a increase (whatever the skill or comp is), make as many combines you can, RNG is in a good mood!
What i did : cast a divination spell (div not maxed yet) until i get a skill up, then make combines... If i fail to skill up more than 10 times in row, i camp out then in and i rince and repeat spell/skillup/combine...*
Works 7 times over 10 (at least for me!).

Jus a brief reminder . . . no matter what yer skill is; no matter what yer stats are . . . yer playin wit a piece o hardware an it has two numbers in it - 0 an 1 an they come up in a string o sequences that tell you a message: Yes or No meanin you either made it or you didn't - its called statistical odds or somethin like that.

Obviously you can better your chances a bit but thar is one variable you can't mess wit an tha is t'X factor - let me explain:

I came into GD one day and heard some folks ******* about Biles - they had been thar fer three days or so an had gotten exactly one. ONE.

I was thar fer like an hour . . . THREE hahaha. the next day Ah came back an got two in a half hour - TWO. Ah was done. Couple folks were really ticked off. Screamin at me practically. Oh well.

On t'other hand Ah spent nine days tryin fer tha damme frozen ************* Tanik. NINE days an at least two hours each time lookin fer him. Finally Ah tripped over him. Ah almost killed him instead o givin him his stupid Thurg-potion.

See me point?? Its just odds folks. You will hit it sometimes right off - othertimes you'll wipe. Do yer best but remember its a game and yer playin t'odds. Even at trivial you can still wipe!!!

I would have to agree, spent hours killing snow griffons about 30 in all and got 1 egg. Gave up for a LDoN. Returned next day killed three and all three dropped it.

On the Tanik side of things was worried it would be too hard to find for a pally. Then walked straight over him while working on the ring quest. It happens ands adds too the Fun.

Goodluck and Godbless everyone:)

The fact of the matter is if you wish to get the 6th shawl and not go by a stroke of lucky combines you will have to get your taloring to 200 so you be better off getting your taloring up to 200+ then doing your combine.

When I started this quest I decided to get as much of the ingreadance as I could for my lev and what I could get with help then got my skills to the proper # and did it all at once. but if you are lev 40-49 it will be hard for you to get the threads for 5th in velks when I was there farming threads there were people in there all the time offering 2pp a thread to loot just an idea and you can get them on the bottem floor just takes MUCH longer.

So if your going for shawl go all the way it's worth it and good luck to you...

I must disagree. I have used the trivials from this sight throughout the Prayer Shawl quests to up Baking to 152 and Pottery to 150 and the trivials seem to be right on the money. This is using numerous different combines in each skill. I have yet to find any reason to doubt the information on this site, and I HIGHLY recommend using it to anyone interested in advancing their trade skills.

#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 04 2002 at 9:28 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I succeeded first try on the 5th shawl...I have a tailoring of 157 and my wis was 255 and I was focused, so str/dex around 200. I also used a Geerlok contraption to aid in success rate. I personally have found skill level to affect my success rate mroe than any other stat factor, and that's from the viewpoint of someone who plays a 60 shammy and has a good friend who plays a 60 chanter, so I have had some insane stats when attempting things. I haven't attempted the 6th yet, though, so guess we'll see.

Got mine tonight.
Tailoring 126, geerlock device, int 240 with kei.

I agree, skill level is most important in determining success/failure. Probably good idea to wait until you reach 131 in tailoring. Use the geerlock device to increase your skill level for the success/failure roll.

I think I got lucky. But figured I had about same chance as those that got it at 131 before (or without) the geerlock. Since I had all the stuff together, I decided to risk it.

Trivial does not mean guaranteed sucess.. A master tradeskiller still has a chance to fail, albeit very tiny chance... If you try combine at the listed trivial of 115, you stand a good chance of failure.

For what it's worth EQ traders has the best info on the Prayer Shawl Quests, bar none. According to them the trivial is 115. Info can be found at: http://www.eqtraders.com/quests/fifth.htm

In any case, though, if you FAIL to make a trivial item you don't get the "You can no longer advance in skill by making this item" message. You only get that on a successful combine.
RE: Success on shawl
# Feb 13 2003 at 2:37 PM Rating: Default
You'll get your shawl back if you fail. Its trivial at about 115 but since failing really really really sucks you should get your skill up as high as possible.

The only stat that determines success or failure is your skill level vs the trivial of the item you are making. INT, WIS or DEX has no bearing on it.

For skillups in tailoring the HIGHEST of INT, WIS or DEX is used. So maxing every stat will do nothing for you.

RE: Success on shawl
# Dec 03 2002 at 6:10 PM Rating: Excellent
I asked about this at the Tradeskill discussion at FanFaire.

Some tradeskills DO have "secondary stats". Strength does help blacksmithing, and it seems like one other skill was DEX for tailoring. ONly those two. I'm not exactly sure how it's figured in, but it helps.

However, I did get confirmed that most of the secondary stats I had heard about were false, like CHA for jewelcraft (though it DOES make it less expensive to buy materials and makes you get a better price for sellingyour jewelry to NPCs), DEX for Blacksmithing, etc.
#REDACTED, Posted: May 25 2002 at 10:32 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Yes, Dex will affect your success rate now. Verant will be implementing it (if they havent already)
RE: Dex / Int / Wis
# Jun 12 2002 at 11:12 AM Rating: Excellent
Few mistakes there... according to the info given by Verant EQTraders has. This is from the EQTraders message board:

"The basics:
INT & WIS: whichever of the two is higher will affect skill increases when practicing any tradeskill. The higher either your INT or WIS is, the greater the chance you have for a skill gain while tradeskilling.

CHA: higher charisma, along with faction, will affect your buying and selling prices with merchants.

Exceptions to the above:
Smithing: skill increases for smithing are determined by INT, WIS or STR, whichever is higher.

Fletching: skill increases for fletching are determined by INT, WIS or DEX, whichever is higher.

While tailoring has been mentioned several times as needing DEX, at last check it was still not implemented.

Stats have no impact on your chance of success or failure when practicing tradeskills. (Only your current skill is supposed to impact your chances of success or failure when creating an item.)

Yes, this is subject to change/debate, but until otherwise corrected by Verant itself, this is the last official word we have on the subject."

They've done a great deal of research, so I believe them.

I collected hundreds of threads from velks before i started hunting for the shardwurm bile. I would fail occasionally when combining the 5 threads but not very often. I managed to collect 6 biles and made 6 glowing threads before i even tried the shawl. I combined the threads and the shawl and was succesful the first time. And you wanna know my tailoring skill? And mind you, it was much lower when i first started collecting silks....

Give me a freaking break.

This quest blows, and now with all the FT items coming out with Luclin, makes me even wonder why I started this quest in the first place.

***Revision***

Ok, the quest does not blow - but I am still mad :op

Obviously I enjoy doing quest as much as the next guy - I wont detail the quests that I have done in EQ. And yes there is something to owning an item that you worked for. No one would have gotten as far as to attempt the combine for the 5th shawl, if they did not enjoy the quest. But nevertheless, this does not nullify ones frustration when you fail on that combine - I think it would only be surpassed if you actually lost all the items in the combine (i.e., the 4th shawl).

With regard to the comment below, yes Int/Wis and Dex both affect your ability to make an item in tailoring.

I had some guildmates help me collect the wurm biles again - we had 58 war, 57 cleric, 55 wiz (me) and 56 shammy. We cleared out the wurm caves at will, and collected all 5 biles in under an hour. Now off to velks and start collecting the threads - again.

I am gonna lvl up my skill in tailoring before I try another combine. Time to start making some Wu armor.

Dex and Int do NOT improve your success rate with trade skills. Indeed, no ability improves your success rate. All abilities do is improve your chance of skiling-up (gaining a skill point). A Tailor with a skill of 150 and a Dex & Int of 1 will succeed at a non trivial item more than a tailor with a skill of 140 with a Dex & Int of 255.

Also, when an item become trivial that means you can no longer learn anything from making it. You can still fail a disgustingly high percentage of the time on barely trivial items. After a point, and no one's quite sure when, your skill will climb to where you reach about a 95% success rate. That's why most people try to "overshoot" the trivial on quest items by about 20 skill points a lot of the time. You can succeed earlier, indeed better than half the time, but the failure rate is still high enough to scare away those who do not wish to gamble with their materials any more than necessary.

Let's face it, no matter what your skill, pressing the COMBINE button is ALWAYS a gamble. :D

1) Not only works for Verant, but is there Trade Skill go-to guy

2) Has stated, in public that NOTHING affects trade skill success except skill level.

Or I can believe you whom I do not know a thing about. You say you have a 250 JC skill -- easy to say but you have no proof to back it up. If you don't believe me go to www.eqtraders.com and you'll find all the proof you need. To repeat, for success ONLY SKILL LEVEL MATTERS.

Going one better than before, I've gone to EQTraders and found the following in their FAQ list. This can be found at:

http://pub13.ezboard.com/feqtraderscornerfrm61.showMessage?topicID=3.topic

Here's the closest thing to "written in stone" you're ever likely to see about EQ & Trade Skills. The following is a quote from Niami Denmother, the webmaster of EQTraders:

> Stats, and how they impact tradeskills, have been the subject of much debate. The below
> information has been what we know directly from VI since May 13, but I've now reworded it a few

>(Yes, I sound frazzled. I created these FAQs to stop the gazillion and one threads asking for

Now, Yakatizma is the Verant developer "in charge" of trade skills. He is the one that they themselves turn to when they have a question. So, DEX does NOT increase success rate at tailoring (neither does INT or WIS), but it DOES increase the chance of getting a skill increase, but it might not help unless the stat is 185 or higher.

So, as I originally stated:

NOTHING affects success at trade skills except the SKILL LEVEL.

#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 27 2002 at 1:10 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I nkow I'm entering this one a little late, but the simple truth is INT/WIS does matter when doing tradeskills. Dex does not matter for tailoring. Your skill level defines how likely you are to succeed at making the item, and your int/wis defines how likely you are to raise your skill on a non trivial item. I've heard the same things how dex makes you less likely to hit your thumb with the sewing needle and get pissed and mess up what your trying to make, but it is not true. Simply put, int/wis only effects your chances of raising your skill (not sure if int/wis can be alternated depending on which is higher or not) and your skill level effects your chance at making what you were trying for.

"However, post 250 skills in all trades, you are considered to have become proficient enough at your tradeskill that you get modifiers raising your chances of making your item. That is the truth from what I have seen. This is from working brewing tailoring and smithing up with an Iksar. Don't believe me? Fine. One day, you will get your skills up high enough and find the truth for yourself."

Ummm... as a 250 Jeweller this is news to me! I read all the tradeskill boards frequently and have never heard of this. I still fail 1 out of 3 tries on vellium blue diamond bracers for example. You have any empirical proof to back this claim up?

Also, Yak has recently flip-flipped and denied that dexterity has any effect on tailoring. Personally, I put Boon of the Garou up just to be safe.

The Crystalline Silk Threads (Are NO DROP)out of Velks lab they look like Pearl Necklaces, best is to carry a large Sewing kit & just Combine every 5 you get into 1 Crystalline Fiber (NO DROP & triv 51), then banking them till you get bile that way you only need 15 Crystalline Fibers insted of 75 Silk threads.
I have Killed 3 days gotten ONE Glowing Bile in GD (NO DROP & Looks like a Foraged Rabbit) and promtly Combined it with 3 Fibers to get a Glowing Silk Piece. One down 4 to go :(

I would not recommend combining the threads ahead of time...because the fibers are NOT stackable while the threads ARE. I don't think it was always this way, but it is now. 75 stacked threads takes up only 4 inventory slots, while 15 fibers take up 15 inventory slots!

Everything is stackable EXCEPT the Bile and the Glowing/Normal Swatches made from the threads. I would suggest that you invest in a Collapsable Sewing Kit as it takes up 1 inv space AND the container that it summons is NOT NO RENT.

If you hunt the Wurms at night you can save yourself a lot of time. You're looking for glowing bile, because the wrms that drop it actually do glow. It'll just look like they have a GLS; you'll see light on the ground around them. Don't mistake their light for the Crystal Shards on the ground, though. I might be mistaken, but I think Crystalline Threads can only be combined in a Coldain Kit. Also, Fiber/Bile combos aren't failable. Good luck, and be safe.

What does the NPC mean in aying, "... be sure to let me inspect the work when it's complete."

Do we give him the finished shawl to get the new one in return? Or do we get the upgraded shawl simply by sewing the glowing silks into the fourth shaw?

I'd hate to give him a shawl, only to have it disappear.

Ty.

Success! on the final combine. and i know theres conflicting stories here but it WAS trivial at the skill of 120. I even took a screenshot to prove it :)

The glowing biles drop off of any of the Wyrms in Great Divide: Of these, teh young Shardwyrms to the south of teh caves are the easiest to kill in order to gain the desired components.

If you are an Erudite, human, or other class that can't see diddly in the dark, there IS one advantage, finally: If you remove any codlstones or other vision-enhancements, at night time it appears that Shadwyrms what have the bile do have a glow.. check the ground for teh appearance of a light source from the wyrms. This is hard to spot (and from whatI can tell, not possible) when one has superior vision, the light source is only clear when the contrast is high due to terrible non-infra or ultra vision.

I have yet to see people post trivials on teh combine for this shawl, and after all the effort I ahev done I am loath to combine until I hit 158 in tailoring (in my 140s now); I should be able to finish off my wu's advancements this week and try the combine and I will post if it has trivialed or not at 158.

Threads look like "pearl necklaces" they drop in groups of 2 3 or 4. Combining them is trivial at 50ish (I don't remember what my skill is at). They are no drop and are not common but not uncommon if that makes sense. You can find them in velks lab on the crystalline type spiders.

I hope this is helpful to those just starting on this leg of the quest.

I combined my shawl and glowing silks. I had a skill of 108, DEX of 190 (gave myself boon), INT 200 and WIS 124, I was sucessful, but it was not trivial.

As soon as I can pick up the next set of components required I'll post info on the next shawl.

Bile ??

Ok, I failed my first attempt at skill 109. Dumb try, I know, but I figured I could do it again. Problem is, the darn Wurms aren't dropping Bile anymore - at least I never find any. I've been hunting for 2 weeks now and have killed over 100 wurms easily without finding a single drop. Did Verant nerf this with a patch? If so, how do I get it UN-nerfed? The stuff was rare before, now it's rarer than an untwinked newbie. Anyone have any suggestions on how/where to find the wurms that drop the bile? I've looked for the glowing ones, but I've heard that regular wurms are PH for them, so either way, I still need to kill tons of wurms. I just need a better strategy. Please share thoughts on this.

Looted a bile off a wurm in GD today, so they are dropping.

They are now stackable--as of last week when I went to velks again.
