Just get a CoM its better and the prices on them have dropped to 3k-4k on most servers.

what if you already have a cone of the mystics? this is pretty nice, actually. i wouldn't mind looting one of these.

Book of obulus is better. Only reason to have this is for primary hand, and CoM is better there. But this is still pretty nice if you don't have both. For wis caster, Testament of Vanear is better for off hand until wis cap is hit.

Sure, when the Bindings of Scribe drops and I don't have any better, I'll just wish for the Obulus to pop out of thin air to replace this. Dumbass.

/shrug, CoM primary only, Book is secondary only, on brell, book is around 2k while CoM is around 500p
kudos to verant

I really have to give verant credit for putting drops on almost every named mob on velious, no matter how unlikely it may seem that they'll be killed. (Yes, i know every mob in the zone is killed on a regular basis, but it still seems odd to me).

You kill this guy for the coldain skin gloves quest in kael. Why would it seem unlikely that he would be killed?
who says?

just curious where its written about these soft caps and hard caps on int/wis/mana - please do tell so i can come to my own conclusions as to wether to get this or not
49!
# Mar 31 2001 at 6:25 PM Rating: Default
49 to get 5 wis and 5 int and 30 mana? Isn't that a little too high for such a weak item? Just posing a question for thought--dont throw flames.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 27 2001 at 10:42 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Actually mana is good at higher levels. Having a wis of 200 gets youso much mana, but after that you are screwed wis wise, so where do you get more mana? from Mana items. After you hit your cap or close to it, start rearranging items. Drop some wis in one item (your testament of vanear) and drop in a less wis +mana item. Now you can reallocate wis to another area, and get a higher wis item that goes in your primary hand or gloves or anything like that. 200 wis doesn't mean anything, I am a shaman and I don't have 200 wis at level 46, and I don't care if I do, I have 150 or so in mana items at the moment, which is about 15wis, but I still have 10 wis I can drop in when I do get more wis items, or upgraded ones.
RE: Mana good for high levels
# Mar 27 2001 at 5:05 PM Rating: Default
yes mana is good at high levels, but the fact remains that this item is like a crappy version of the cone of mystics. 20 *less* mana AND no ac, where the cone has 5ac. basically, instead of going to all the trouble ot get this, just save up 3-5k (which shouldn't be hard if your the level to obtain this book) and buy a cone of mystics, or go to seb for that matter and win one. you're right about mana, but this item is still inferior considering that there are items out there already that are better.

At level 46, 1 wis=about 9.2 mana when below soft cap, which you say you are. This book has 5 wis, Testament has 10. That is 46 mana difference. Testament has 10mana this has 30, so you lose 46 mana on the wisdom, and pick up 20 on the mana, net loss 26 mana. Why would you want to do this. BTW, Shammy can't use it. I'd put it in primary to replace my sharkbone warhammer, but by the time I could get it (my cleric is only 33 now) I plan to have better.
This guy is quest-related.
# Mar 25 2001 at 9:11 AM Rating: Default
Go and click on Royal Scribe Kaavin. Then click on Tiny Savages under the quest section....you turn in his head for some nice caster gloves. The extra loot isn't very important, as you get some NICE rewards for killing him.
hard to get!? NOT
# Mar 24 2001 at 2:38 PM Rating: Decent
I was with a single group of lvl 50 to 60 people. 1 45 cleric, 1 52 warrior, 1 54 warrior, 1 57 shadowknight, 1 43 chanter(me), and 1 55 bard. We went invisible and went straight through to the scribes little room. As long as you don't let the guy leave the room you don't get agroed on from the other room. The bard snared him, tanks beat him down(4 times cause he can CH). I believe this book IS for a quest. And its not too bad an item anyway, for someone who has reached their stat cap, or someone who doesn't want to do the venear quest, OR someone who doesn't want to camp/buy OB. Please, stop saying how useless every item in the game is. If they just made better items and not some worse or the same as others, then the game would get boring REALLY fast. /rant off
Rubbish
# Mar 24 2001 at 11:56 AM Rating: Default
After 200 each stat points converts directly to mana.

Eg 220 int would give an extra bonus 20 mana for the int above 200.

Some people are perfectly correct, this book is pathetic.

umm excuse me but your mistakin the int cap is now set at 255 not 200 anymore..Zgny

Below 200 wis, my 54 druid gets 10 points of mana per 1 point of wisdom. Above 200 wis, my druid only gets 4 points of mana per 1 point of wisdom. So, the soft cap is not exactly removed, its just modified a bit. I use wisdom and int items up to level 200 on all my chars. Above 200, I use mana items. I have a Scimitar of the Emerald Dawn (100 mana), and a Bone Handled Scimitar (8 wis). The BHS only gives me 8*4=32 mana, which is a lot less than my Emerald Dawn scimitar. But, they both sell for 6Kp on my server. I see a lot of players trying to get to 255 WIS. I hear an occational WOOT! 240 WIS! I think they can do a lot better just getting to 200, then getting mana items.

Easy Fix to this
# Mar 24 2001 at 9:41 AM Rating: Default
Change the mana to 80 or 100 mana...this would make the item worth getting and using
kinda forgetting?
# Mar 24 2001 at 5:55 AM Rating: Default
by this time most people have maxed their stat, so the +30 mana is more important than a plus the wis or int. Least that's what I've been taught.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 23 2001 at 5:40 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I can't understand why high level mobs drop such useless items !!!! I'm a 51 druid and I'm carrying a Testament of Vaenar (10wis 10mana) since level 24.
RE: Useless
# Mar 23 2001 at 5:53 PM Rating: Default
yes but as you will notice, this is primary and secondary. testament of vaneer is secondary only. i'm pretty sure the book of obulus is offhand as well...not to mention it's rare as hell and sells for around 15k.

I want to say that the scribe in Icewell is hard to kill. Not only he is tough, but you have to fight your way to him through Icewell. Such a raid requires 3-4 groups of 55+. I believe that such people easily have the 15k to buy a book of Obulus, if they don't have something better.
The reward is really crappy.

Easier for druids to get a Ruined battleworn mace, 6 wis
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 24 2001 at 6:27 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Hehe :) I bet you kill the scribe in Icewell everyday ;)
RE: Useless
# Mar 24 2001 at 3:06 AM Rating: Default
Did you people ever stop to think this item might be for a quest?
Even the Testament of Vanear is ment to be turned in for a few Platinum and faction, maybe this Book can be turned in at Kael Drakkal or something for something cooler. Definately worth holding on to...
(Another note, Testament of Vanear can only be held in your secondary hand, so you could put this in your primary you big flamers!)
RE: Useless
# Mar 23 2001 at 8:46 PM Rating: Default
The things the guy said above are good points but one thing...This book is No Drop so it can't sell for 15k =P
RE: Useless
# Mar 23 2001 at 9:27 PM Rating: Default
He was refering to the Book of Ob. It is not no drop and is very pricy.

This is decent for someone who doesnt have a cone of mystics.
+30 mana.
Doesn't sound bad to me.

Wisdom bonus at high level is better than mana bonus.
RE: Useless
# Mar 24 2001 at 8:02 AM Rating: Decent
At 20 a bonus of 4 int gave my enchanter more than 40 mana, and the mana given only goes up.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 26 2001 at 7:08 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) My god what are you smoking? you're saying at lvl 20 that 1int = 10+ mana? Get your facts straight newbie
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 24 2001 at 6:51 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Question , What u can do with 30 mana ?
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 28 2001 at 3:13 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) there is a soft cap on int/wis of 200 + there is a hardcap on how much mana someone can have. if your already over 200 int/wis a +8 or +10 or +1000 int or wis item doesnt mean jack. so then you need the +mana items and when you get to the hard cap the +mana items no longer mean anything then you can start on other stats. like str to carry more loot or hp ac so you can last a second or two longer if getting hit on. im sick of hearing people ***** and moan that an item is useless just because there is something "better" out there when people arnt looking at all the facts.
