I have gotten this off of Stonegrabbers in Marus Seru as well.
Well, it was one of the mobs made of stone in Marus Seru.

Yet it's used in a newbie quest where the starting level is 5? This makes no sense......

I looted some of this in Marus Seru too, sold it to the vendors as I though it was vendor trash.
Ok Rodcet nife, the bazaar is full of this stuff for sale at 2pp each.
This is what spawns instead of IRON oxide sometimes at the spawn points in steamfont. Since the IRON oxide is in very high demand, the spawns are stripped pretty quickly each time they pop. The iron oxides sell fast, for hundreds of plat, leaving the people with a bunch of russett oxide that nobody really wants.

Iron oxide sells for around 900pp each in the bazaar on teh Ayonae Ro sever.

It also rarely drops from fire elementals in Nagina (or however that is spelled) The dungeon reached in the SE corner of lavastorm.
Steamfont used to be my favorite newbie hunting ground till this started dropping and the fat heads came to town killing EVERY SPAWN between the mino caves and the mills.
Ok I started a gnome Mage and thought it would be fun to do the armor quest. Well I need this and cant find it anywhere. So I come to here and it drops in the Hole of all places! GREAT! So now I cant get the foot part because of this. Im sure someone will be willing to sell it to me for 50pp or more, but since Im Lvl 10 now and have a total of 4 pp in the bank...Well you can figure out the rest. Oh did I mention that you need Cloth armor not small cloth for the quest.
So di I seem agitated, Yeah? Good only spent 5 hours trying to find the items I need only to get, Dosent combine with small armor pieces :)

I am going through the same frustration with finding this item as well. Level 14 gnome mage and wonder also why if this is newbie armor that the drops have to be this rare? The concepted posed by Twinkman ... err..Wynkman says that if you have the pp and other chars ...newbie quests can be ignored. Also if you have to keep returning to find these rare drops until you have already outgrown the armor, why bother putting it in the game. Sadly, extremists like Wynkman think only that we want to be level 60 tomorrow and that was not the point of discussion.

I have seven characters currently, and have finished 6 of these newbie armor quests. ALL QUESTS have one or 2 very rare components for the chest piece and weapon, much like some of the high-end tradeskills. I believe Verant did that to increase the satisfaction in completion of the quest. You can be glad that the combines are no-fail, unlike the high-end tradeskils. Ask this question of your self; If everthing was easy and therefore the challenge was completely removed, how much FUN would you have? HoHumm, I made a druid. HoHumm, tomorrow I'm lvl 60. Yawn.
Is an uncommon ground spawn near the mino caves in steamfront. If you see something on the ground, it will be one of a few things when you pick it up, this being one of them.

this drops in steam font, near the slaver cave on the big gear

the only thing i could find on the big gear near the cave was Iron Oxide not russet. Any other way of getting this for a lvl 10? I don't think The hole is an option for me.
