That this shield is neither Druid nor Wizard usable is important. To an erudite who can't teleport or couldn't afford the price for a port, it used to take forever to travel to Qeynos on the boat back in the days before PoP porting existed. Money and uber items were also a lot harder to come by when this zone was created, so for the erudites, being more or less cut off from the rest of the world like they are, something like this was like a gift from God. Now admittedly it's just a magic kite shield with a couple of very minor bonuses, but a lot of people probably carried these things for a long time until they could afford something better.

"...how often do you see someone over 20 with a shield?"

Well...if you've ever grouped with a warrior who knows his stuff and isn't an ogre or troll (yes, they exist) you may observe that they still use the off-hand shield switch to bash at level 60.

A magical shield is never something to laugh at.
=D

this guy is actually pretty tough! i have solo'd him 3 times 22+ and i got this the second time, i gave this to a guildy, sold a forlorn bracer to a guildy for real cheap and the last time he didnt drop anything. Last night tho me and my high lvl buddy whacked him and i got a cloak of the forlorn which looks pretty nice for dropping in the warrens! Also my enchanter got the violet lamp thing which is a nice newby item. I also have the forlorn bow from the one guy which has a decent range on it(125)
The End All...

Okay, peeps...let me end this argument with some of what I like to call "logic".
This shield is a POS by any standards.
Ok...lets assume that we are dealing with a lowbie who is actually grouping to loot this and actually breaks a sweat to do so.
- Hella heavy. 'nuf said
- Anyone who is high enough to even group against the prince to get this shield can't scrounge up 15 plat for a SBS or Chittin Shell Shield? Come on!! That's three wisps' GLSs(low blue by now if not green) at 5pp per! Plus the loot in this zone even up TO the prince could provide enough money to buy a SBS or similar shield...much more AC, lighter, and a LOT more common!
- + WIS or + INT??? Okay, peeps...lets not forget that it is only at level 20 when WIS and INT are even that important to PURE casters...raw mana is what is important to a caster/hybrid-caster at this point...not WIS or INT!
- Druids not using it? Hmm... Well, if you were a druid and really hell bent on using this shield for the +1 WIS (again, remembering that it does you hardly any good before lvl 20)then I've got a crapload of soft wicker to unload on you for, say....10pp/1 AC?!?

The fact is that this shield is a total piece of crap no matter how you look at it. It is an attempt on Verant's part to make it not TOO good. Well...they sure succeeded there.

PS: Shields are almost completely obsolete IMHO anyway. Who needs a shield over level 17 anyway? A paladin/SK would be better served with 2hs since the 2h weapon changes and since they can't dual wield...it makes only using a 1hs kind of silly to me. And every other melee class can dual wield by then anyway...so why would THEY use a shield? There ARE exceptions (CGS for big +wis bonus...Shield of the Slain Unicorn that started out as a good idea, but ended up sucking...and I'm sure a couple others) but as a whole, how often do you see someone over 20 with a shield?

Hello, impoverished level 5 ogre shaman received this as gift the other day, and I will wield it with pride until something better comes along because:

- I'm not some weakling druid;
- I don't yet have the money to buy even a regular kite shield, and there aren't many folks handing out gear in the Feerrott;
- I'll take all the WIS I can get, 'cause I'm an ogre!

(I have to agree though, for anyone else, this piece of equipment is not worth it)
Have to agree

The weight is ridiculous - erudites are wusses anyway and as zone is designed for them it does seem weird that they cant really use it - look for the other shield that drops from mugglewhump its more use til you can get a (LIGHT source) shiny brass shield . As an aside Erudites - keep an eye out for globes of everburning flame -- GLS with some poison resisitance which you can put in your range slot :) nice for you
Drops off the Prince =)

This drops off of Prince Bragnar, and him alone, as far as I have ever seen. =) If you want to know why it's so heavy.. think. How many shields have wis and int out there that L 10 - 25s can attain? Easily? NOT many. It's got a huge weight on it. This is so higher levels don't go pharm it for their twinks. I know that if someone really needed this shield, they are probably not loaded down with heavy full fine plate steel, or anything like that. I think it's a very nice weapon, and you CAN deal with its high weight.. just give up a few backpacks is all =)

As soon as I remember the graphic for it, I'll let you know. =)

Who does this drop off of?

Drops off the Prince, not sure of rarity, it's the only "true" loot I have gotten in about 5 kills. I usually get a piece of soft wicker or a bronze weapon off the prince, sometimes nothing but a little coin. And yes i am getting experience for killing him, so it's not the looting restrictions.
not that bad
# Mar 23 2001 at 7:45 PM Rating: Decent
well if you dont have anything better, anything looks great...i know if i was an untwinked cleric or shaman or other wis caster, this shield wouldnt be too bad :)
and it is magic so you can bash magic creatures (wisps, etc) so its not all that bad.

I have to disagree, you'd have to be twinked to carry a sheild this heavy. Especially if you wanted to carry any of the other overweight loot that drops in this zone. The only good loot I got out of my one trip to this zone want a stack of kobold meat (+1str, +1sta after I cooked it up)
No Druid?
# Mar 20 2001 at 4:24 PM Rating: Default
Y can't Druid's use this thing? SHM and RNG, but no DRU? hmmmm....
RE: No Druid?
# Mar 21 2001 at 11:53 AM Rating: Decent
I agree it has +1 wis why not a druid, think about it Rasnger no he will have duel weld. Shaman too many buffs why not druid???
RE: No Druid?
# Mar 23 2001 at 10:37 AM Rating: Default
Because druids have way to many items catering to their needs. Also look where its dropping and what it is dropping off of, druid wouldn't make sence.
Heavy
# Mar 19 2001 at 6:23 PM Rating: Decent
Wow that thing weighs as much as a fricken ogre....Seems like theres better things you can get at 15 Shiny Brass, Chitin Shell (?)

If you are hunting in the Warrens I suggest you go to Tox forest and do the mining cap quest to get a bone shield instead.

Same AC, weight only 9.5, and +1 disease resistance. Plus you have a chance to get it around level 5 and higher. You just have to kill a lot of kobold scouts to find enough caps. I handed
in 9 before I got it - and that was only after I killed a lot of kobolds in the Warrens and got
a kindly faction with the Heretics.

Actually it weighs a lot more than a naked ogre... if you look real close, naked ogres weight 0 stones. Maybe a lot of that flab hides pockets of helium.

Man, you'd use up half your stamina bar just doing a bash with this thing! LOL
RE: Heavy
# Mar 19 2001 at 7:13 PM Rating: Default
yeah, i agree. the weight is ridiculous. the ac to weight ratio is horrible. can't see any reason anyone would want it. the 8ac is not appealing. the wis and int is just silly.
Er, no it isn't...this is in ODUS, remember?
# Mar 25 2001 at 12:25 PM Rating: Default
You know, home of the Erudites, who don't have warriors but have paladins and shadowknights, classes who could very well use a shield with a little wisdom or int bonus? And while a shiny brass shield is probably a bit nicer, MY shadowknight isn't going to hike across the entire world to crushbone just to get one...

True - but our strength is horrible! With this shield and a weapon I would be lucky to have enough strength left to wear burlap armor, let alone anything heavier!!!
