Item Lore: Addendum to a treatise on spell research.

Text:

You will often find that
even the crudest of
materials make some of the
best materials for spell
research. While you might
think that hides of animals
are too crude to use,
they actually make very
good scrolls that can be
used to write down spells
to be learned by either
yourself or another.
There are ten different
hides that you will find.
Some you will be able to
find on living
creatures in the world,
while others will have been
prepared for use by others,
but will need some extra
preparation to be useful to
you. For the power
of the spell to be
applied, raw hides
needed are stiff hides, crude
hides, rough hides, hides,
fine hides, supple hides,
runic hides, fine runic
hides, supple runic hides,
and fine supple runic
hides.

With the exception of stiff
hides, there are five ways
that each hide can be
prepared. Each hide will
have a solution appropriate
for it that can be found on
select merchants around
Norrath.

The first preparation is to
simply soak the hide in the
appropriate solution in
your spell research kit.

The second preparation is
to clean it with the
appropriate solution and
celestial solvent in your
spell research kit.

The third method is to
prepare it in lye to be
sure that impurities are
bleached clean and rinse
it in the appropriate
solution to be sure that
the dangerous lye is rinsed
from it.

The fourth preparation is
to smooth the hide with a
skinning knife while
cleaning it with the
appropriate solution and
celestial solvent in your
spell research kit.

The final preparation will
not work on stiff hides as
the combination of using
the skinning knife and the
lye breaks apart this low
quality hide. Again you
will use your skinning
knife to smooth the hide
while bleaching it with lye
and rinsing it with the
appropriate solution. Be
careful not to get any of
this on your hands as the
lye is rather toxic.
You will find these hides
useful to you until the
point where you will start
needing to use better
materials.
