ok for all of us who actualy like to roleplay, heres what we've been waiting for, stuff that just looks nice, think of it as a formal weapon, only used for specal occations, weddings, etc. its cool, sure it would be cooler if it was a good weapon too, but it was also made by dogs :P but at least they have a nice eye for shiney things :)

we are all very impressed with your uttery useless knowledge of the ancient art of swordmaking but give me a break. Stop trying to bring realism into a fantasy game. It is a newbie zone stocked with newbie weapons. There are like 6000 items in the game and I am sure coming up with new types of weapon names can be tedious and, ultimately, unnecessary.

i too, and remeber they're not made by master swordsmiths with the best materials either.
made by doggy looking things with bronze.... which is a quite soft metal, heavier than regular steel too.
perhaps there will be a better version of this in the stonebrunts, after all a bit more time to perfect and possibly different race crafting it.

Look, this isnt an Oriental Wakizashi. Its a KOBALD Wakizashi. The doggies saw the real one a long time ago, and made this cheap imitation of it. This was not made by a swordsmith, just a dog.

A real wakizashi or Katana is made of steel. And is made of three different TYPES of steel (hard, soft, medium). that's why the wavy lines along the blade edge. The HARD steel of the blade edge is being mated with the medium steel of the sides of the weapon.
This weapon, however, is made of BRONZE. Which is heavy, and softer than steel. Maybe when/if they add the StoneBrunt Mts they'll add a high-speed version of the wakizashi (8/28 1h slash or something).
My point is, don't complain that this is "an awesome weapon turned crappy by Verant!" The real Wakizashi might be excellent, but that's because it's made of steel. This weapon is made of bronze, and will, obviously, suck. Verant did a good job of making its' stats reflect its' composition.

actually its one type of steel, but the way its forged using the clay method is what makes the blade edge realy hard to stay sharp and the back softer to absorb blows from other weapons. True it is one of the finest weapons ever made, but true it is also a game. They will probably add better versions later. I wish they also added some tradeskill recipies for blacksmiths to be able to forge them like other weapons ^_^

What is the "clay method?" I have a book about weapons that explains why oriental weapons are so sharp (different hardnesses of metal in different areas) and that the wavy lines along the blade can be signifigant in determining the maker of the weapon, but I don't know anything about the "clay method." I thought maybe the differing hardnesses were achieved by a special quenching process, but wasn't sure.

"Clay method" is one of final step of making a katana.It is to obtain desired tempered line on katana. the clay is mixture of grinded stone, charcoal, and other elements.
