I was lucky enough to see these drums drop on my last visit to Siren's Grotto. A 61 bard and I, a 55 cleric, were able to take down any placeholders and the named. It definitely wasn't easy, but with the bard tanking and twisting mana regen, slow, and melee buffs we were pretty safe through what proved to be long, drawn out fights.

Most mobs were very magic resistsant - at 55 I landed at about 40% success. The placeholders do ENRAGE, cannot be rooted, snared, or charmed, but can be mezzed.

Also, we were able to take out Fellspine (TOUGH fight in which we would have died if not for the fact that I had KEI). .. Oh, and we got the haste belt ;)

These Drums are still one of the best in game (and definately the best drums for twinks), had my bard using a walrus skin drum at lvl 46, this hit for 55hp with tuyans chant of flame, with drums of the beast at lvl 46 i hit for 62, which when you stack 3 Dots is ALOT of extra dps.

the post about dire charming there. i went with 63 enchie and there were virually no dire charmable mobs. she tried on the lowest level mobs there(enthralled molkors, bulthars, watery servants) with maxxed cha and it being as MR debuffed as possible(no idea if that would help but after 4 hours of camping drum and 3 failed DC attempts we decided to try it). NO DICE guess they nerfed that like there like i did many other places so enchies don't become the best solo class in game after their direcharm level.

the mobs i dire charm are the walrusses , manatees an sea elephants , the are still DC able but only when they are of the lowest level they can possibly be, you may have to clear a few before you get one that is of a low enough level.
bard solo
# May 07 2003 at 6:06 PM Rating: Decent
a level 62 bard has NO shot to solo him that i can think of. i am 55 now and went there to get my drum(still no luck after 2 weeks or trying got me a neriad shawl and lyndellns lute tho) The icy placeholders are MEAN they got nerfed about year or 2 ago but still mean. They have a dmg shield thats in the 50+pts per shot range, fair resits, TONS(didn't calculate but i am guessing 10-20k hp range) of hp. they never spawn alone on land, tho there are a few areas where you could pull single ones.

MIGHT, repeat MIGHT have a PRAYER to solo one with charms but i really don't see it. His dmg shield alone took our warlord(61 5500hp) down to about 60 life before enhie coudl disspell it and it was the first spell she cast upon pull.

No, if you can solo one it would be a miracle. might be possible but i dont see how. find a way, post it on here.

Could a level 62 druid solo the shimmering Sea Spirit with no trouble getting to it? and how often do these drums drop?

This really depends upon where it spawns at any given time ,the shimmering sea servant can spawn anywhere a icy/watery servant spawns on land.
some locations are far easier to get to than others, None of them are right near a zone in so you will most likely need to kill a few mobs to get to them.

If you have dire charm and the shimmering is in a good spot its fairly easy to solo. if you dont have dire charm or its in a bad spot and you dont know the zone you will likely die trying.

The reason I mention dire charm is the fact that the shimmering , its placeholder and almost all of the mobs that spawn underwater are unrootable/unsnareable and often come in groups. The pet can act as a tank. Dire charmed Pets here make excellent tanks due to the large number of hp they have. the lvl 58 large druid heal only heals about 1 bubble on the servant sea elephants.

Overall I would not suggest trying to do this solo if you have never hunted in SG, play around near the zone ins for a while and learn the zones quirks and pathing, this zone can be very unforgiving if you mess up.

30k is fairly low. I see them go for 40k all the time. There is only one other tradeable drum in game that is better than it and only has a slight increase to the percussion mod. It goes for 70k on Karana. It has alot of stats but other than HP/STA or maybe INT/CHA if charming what the hell good is stats on a drum anyway lol.

Clarification
# Aug 24 2002 at 12:39 PM Rating: Good
To Clarify: I am not sure as to the past, but as of now these drums greatly increase the effect of selos at a run. Considering with epic off hand, there is a very noticable difference in speed when I drop these drums onto main hand.

Also, On Elemental chorus, there is a 30 to 40 point difference when I equip this compared to straight epic.

These are hands down the best drums in game.

One other factor that many people are missing about these drums is this. The effect on the drums is right click targetable. This makes on hell of a dummy buff when fighting any dispelling mob.

Considering you stack this with lute of howler, and illusion mask, you are giving yourself 3 dummies against any dispelling mobs.

RE: Clarification

While I wouldn't let DDoD rot with such amazing stats on the rare occasion that they do drop in Vex Thal, they certainly would not replace my drums of the beast as my primary percussion instrument.

I'd keep them in range for the stats but when I look for best drums in the game, personally I mean the actual mod to bard songs, In other words, song effect is everything, stats on an instrument mean nothing.

Also, occlusion of sound would be better memorized and played with a better drum (for egsample; drums of the beast) than this clickable one because instruments do not have any effect on clickable item songs. And as you can see from your post about the Vex Thal drum, the percent modifier to bard songs is 0.0%, so no increase. Its all about ranged stats.

So for clarification, 0.0 percent is not better than 44.44 percent.... well maybe on your next credit card statement.... or if you're a monk.

OOS
# Aug 20 2002 at 5:30 AM Rating: Good
This drum lets you melee and easily switch out your primary weapon for the drum for a second while casting OOS and other resist songs, then replacing your primary weapon back in its spot. If you dont have this drum you have to either not melee if you are primarily doing resist type songs or switch out both weapons to put in a drum. Thats why this drum is so bad ***. Similar to lute of the howler and a couple other lutes out there that you can wield a weapon with, when i melee and am playing cantana of replenishment i can replace my primary with a lute just before the song is about to cast and replace it in about a second to get good effects from the lute while i continue to melee. I could give a rats *** about that EB thats not what makes this drum so desirable.

The funny part of this drum: Go in EC with the drum, make a hotkey with it, target yourself, run selo (49) and dont stop hitting hotkey while running.....LOL => You will look like Dragon ball Z :-), and the all zone is going to shout or ooc : OMG!!!! hehe

And for the question just below : yes it look like a tambourine ;)

Just to clarify
# Jun 06 2002 at 6:32 AM Rating: Decent
Just to clarify a few things. I have this drum, and it's awesome, the fixed the patch about it not letting us go zoom zoom with it on without having to walk, and, needless to say, we do fly. Yes, it can be used with a weapon in the offhand. And I wish to get one of the special secondary instruments to test this, however, I simply do not have one. And, finally, lets just say my dots have never caused more damage. Simply put, I don't even care if I have weapons anymore, my three dot combo is just plain wrong. Granted, I totally need weapons for fear kiting, but, I only ever fear kite against something that summons that I have to kill, such as Nezekezena, Eldrig, those kinds of fun mobs. And, since swarm kiting is the simple most effective form of kiting for us bards, the drum is kinda pointless there, but, it's no bother, because I just love taking down a jerk off like Gorgul Paclock in less time solo then it takes most groups. Hehe, hello instant 2k, drums pay for themselves, effort, or money, no doubt there. As a bard, I doubt you truely need any armor at all, unless you plan on doing raids, because solo, you can go with nothing more then your drum, and if you don't believe me, then you've obviously never played a bard. And, if you want proof of that, then make a newby character on Vazz, and I'll go naked kite every gaurd in WFP with nothing but my drum.

I am also responding to Presarc's post "Here is reason..." Presarc, you should read Psycoholic's post on Percentages (found in the posts on Alluring Horn, which is listed as having -0.99 percent to bard song). He does a good job of explaining how percentages work. When it is listed as 0% it doesn't mean it doesn't increase the song at all. Quoting Psycoholic's post:

The percentages that people give for instruments are usually using storebaught instruments as the base (so an unfinished brass trumpet from a merchant would be 0%). This doesn't mean that instruments from merchants don't effect songs, nor does it mean that this instrument makes songs less effective. It simply means that this instrument effects songs 0.99% less than a brass instrument from a merchant. It makes songs better... just not much better.

As for Celestieal, you said you run faster with no drum equipped. How so??? My bard is only 20 right now and with the Walrus Skin Drum equipped(said to increase bard songs 23%), she already runs way faster than SOW, whereas without a drum equipped she runs about the same speed as SOW.

As for the whole equipping a weapon and instrument at the same time argument, I can't say I know the answers to that one. So far all the instruments I have are equipped in Secondary Slot only and can not be equipped with another weapon (or another instrument).

RE: Some Questions Answered
# Nov 19 2001 at 2:18 AM Rating: Default
From what I hear, the "Run faster /w no drum" argument is true. The usual theory is that /w drums of the beast, selo's breaks the limit on increase of movement, and so resets, due to a bug. Ducking and sneaking together is supposed to "slow" you down enough enough not to break said limit, but as I do not own the drums, I haven't had the chance to test this.

Either that, or Verant won't let Drums of the Beast work with Selo's so they don't have to add horizontal impact damage. ;)
Here is reason...
# Oct 30 2001 at 3:21 PM Rating: Default
the reason they dont increase speed songs is because there is a speed hack out there, and with this drum + selo's song of travel it would be as fast as that, and the game would recognize as a hack...

So...

Some Questions Answered

This Instrument is an uncommon/rare drop off a Shimmering Spirit, around the low 50's (conned even to me at level 52). This mob is rare, probably on a PH (can't tell yet), and drops other things, one of them the Wavecrasher.

The percentage to *MOST* Bard songs is 55%. Selo's line of songs actually have a negative effect (I run faster with no drum equiped).

This instrument IS Primary slot ONLY. You CAN equip a weapon (or anything else thats Secondary slot) in your Secondary slot, just like Lute of the Howler. The exeption is other Instruments that are Sendondary Slot (havn't tested the PoA Horn or VP Lute theory).

The right click effect is *TARGET* Endure Breath, with an INSTANT cast time, versus the Singing Steel Gauntlets, which is a Perma-Effect.

We had about 4 groups, level range 46 - 60 in the area where this mob spawn. Could easily do 2 groups level 55 - 60 with good resist gear.

The real story on these things
# Apr 26 2001 at 11:38 PM Rating: Excellent
-Seems to add about 45% to percussion songs (except running songs-currently slows you to normal run speed)
-Effect is right-clickable and targetable
-Is primary hand only and DOES allow use of a one-handed type thing in your off-hand (other instruments are two-handed)
RE: The real story on these things
# May 20 2001 at 2:05 AM Rating: Good
They don't "slow" you to normal run speed, they roll over your speed counter to more than 200%. The engine can't comprehend that, so it ignores the 2xx and sets it to xx. Try turning on walk when you use these with selo's and you'll fly.

RE: Primary Hand...
# Feb 22 2001 at 2:52 AM Rating: Good
Not only that, but there are a few instruments out there that are just-Secondary-only (I.e. you can still put something in the primary). I believe the Sky quest flute works this way, as well as the lute from VP.

Unfortunately, AFAIK no bard on any server has both just-Primary and just-Secondary instruments to see if dual-instrument wielding works correctly.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 03 2001 at 9:34 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Hmm, you know every Bard on every server do you? FYI ALL the old instruments are secondary only. Every Bard has just secondary instruments. As soon as any Bard gets this they can test the dual wield ability. Just secondary means just that. You can not put it in your primary hand. It does not stand for dual wieldable.
#REDACTED, Posted: Mar 12 2001 at 3:05 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Did it occur to you that if you can't equip a weapon in your first hand while using an instrument, you probably can't equip an instrument either? =P The original poster is right, you'd need single hand primary and single hand secondary instruments to test this.
RE: Hey Jackass...
# Jul 21 2001 at 11:25 PM Rating: Default
Yeah, let's call someone offering his opinion on something a jackass. & he's talking about specifically known instruments that go in the off hand, & can be used w/ a weapon in the main hand.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 30 2001 at 5:58 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) to the jackass poster, YES you can equip a weapon in you sec hand with this in your primary, try being a bard that has one BEFORE you post... lamer... ;)
