Especially since Luclin came out, this quest isn't really worth the effort you have to put into it.

I know what you're gonna say. The epic isn't about the reward. It's about the prestige of its completion.

Well, that's a point, but a Pally may as well just get a simple "Thank You" from an NPC for all he or she must go through to get a sword that isn't close to as good as I can get tonight by taking some friends and camping a mob someplace.

Countless hours of faction work. Countless Naggy and Vox raids. THEN, a Necro that's just as tough or tougher. AND, I pay 1000pp for the "privilege" to get this sword.

Count me out. I play EQ to have fun. Not to boast about how "I got my epic". For I would be bragging about wasting endless days of my gaming time on attaining a weapon that is frankly inferior to many of the newer dropped weapons available.

Part of getting a player to DEVOTE that kind of time and effort is making the end result worth it.
Again, Verant falls pathetically short of the mark.

SO have at if you will. And after 40 or so Dragon raids and countless deaths, I'll be more than glad to let you inspect me with all the wonderful drops I got doing something way less complicated and more useful with my recreational time.

Just a view from the cheap seats.

Okay man. You should quit your paladin RIGHT NOW. I was in the same point of view as you and I did quit my paladin, but then something made me re make my pally. So I did. I went on about 10 dragon raids, got both of my books, and I was MORE than happy to pay 1000 platinum to get this sword. I mean, good lord. This thing used to be the best weapon in the game. If you wielded this you were the ****. Its a big status symbol to say "I did my Fiery Avenger, helluva quest but I did it." And it is a good sword, sure the damage/delay but its not THAT bad. The stats + proc is a nifty add on, and well frankly if you want your epic, you need this. The secret to getting your books *gasp* is to get in a guild that can do the dragons, camp in Sol B with your neighborhood druid xping (you need some before you can talk trash) and tracking him. Do the same in Perma except with an alt clicking the wall. Once the dragons dead, PRESTO you have a pair of books. And the necro that we have to kill is easy, you havent looked up the quest, thats all. And countless hours of faction work? Is 3 "countless"? Or can you count up to only two due to your ignorance. Also, its 1.5k to get the sword.

Next time, buy some front row seats and learn ********

Now now, no need to insult me because I expressed my feelings. And like you yourself said, "it USED to be the best sword in the game".

There are comparable blades that drop in Akheva and Chardok. And a couple level 50-60 groups can go to these places and fight. Granted, you might have to take a few groups for mobs that drop really UBER stuff.

I'm definitely NOT a twink. In fact, all the gear I own I have killed for or won on rolls. I've played my character "legit" so to speak from day one, so I think that in itself says something more about me than whether or not I do an epic that isn't personally worth the effort involved to me.

As far as status and "uberness", if you guys are into that, that's great. I was in no way slamming anyone. There are those of us who could care less about being in a Uber guild.

I was simply voicing my personal disappointment at a quest I feel is outdated and not worth the effort.

LOL, another lowbie powergamer that became high. man, now you really dont really know about everquest and why it was made, you probably just play because you want to be the best there is, want to get the best items, compaires this as **** when he looks up all the nice weapons that drop from high end mob encounters, just to let you know, the Pally epic still ranks well with other high end weapons, especially for those who arnt in a well off *uber as you say it* guild who cant raid those high end dungeons and mobs or pharm up dragons at will. the epic is a status symbol, talk to a lot of high end guilds about the requirements of getting an invitation, most will say the basic requirement of getting in would be to have your epic. the badass guild on our server is Silent Redemption (excuse spelling, just got out of KC group and im tired) and they have a pretty basic view of enrollment, be lvl 60 and have your epic. also while im here, lots of people Roleplay, yes, roleplay, and if you ever followed the lore of everquest, you will understand the epics a lot more than just some quest to get a nice weapon. i also know a 50+ pally who still wears Ro Quest armor simply due to the fact that he roleplays, so the epic would be a nice addition to him and his guild. the epic is a work of art, time, dedication, sacrifice, all are parts of what makes your character you, fine, take the short path, take the easy route, but dont flame people who like the feeling of accomplisment in themselves and those who helped. i am finished with this last Quote from Morsereg "Crucify me... I dont care. I give up."

You've got to be kidding me. I know this is an old *** post, but I still see posts like this as of recent. I play on The Rathe, and let me tell you - nobody role plays for jack squat. Sure you'll see an ogre trying to simulate a low intelligence creature with broken english every now and then, but that's it. All I ever see now are people linking each other their equipment back and forth - EQ isn't about roleplaying it's about what you wear. I played the damn game when it first came out and I never saw people role play - they were greedy, selfish, and _I_ tried role playing by using a store bought claymore with my warrior cause I like two handers. But all that got me was ridicule because it wasn't "uber".

Honestly, though, you fanboys who defend the game to the death sicken me and ruin these forums. I try to come here for information and some well thought out opinions about certain pieces of equipment, and all I see is some immature moron go off incoherently about like someone insulted their mother. Ralston was just stating his opinion about the epic and I happen to agree. If someone disagrees, there is a way to say it without getting defensive and immediately going to insult the person. I really do think that the epics need an upgrade. Why would you bust your *** to do these epics when there are so many other better weapons you can get from luclin and PoP that are no drop? Look at this list:

http://www1.bbiq.jp/aensland/eq/pal%202h.html

I see a LOT of players wielding the swords on this list now. These weapons smoke the pally and SK two hand epics. Now, I can understand perfectly how someone would still want to go and get the pally epic for pride/sense of accomplishment. And I can respect that opinion. I can also respect those who feel that the pally epic isn't worth even the time to look up after taking a glance at the stats. I cannot respect those who ignorantly get fanboyish and start flaming those who's opinions are different from theirs. You wanna defend EQ like it's your life or something.

Man, here's some advice to those fanboys who defend EQ like it's their mama. Log out, go outside, and realize that there's a whole nother world out there for you to discover. :)

Was it really necessary to insult Ralston for stating his opinion? He did not flame or insult anyone, he just gave an opinion that happened to be different from your own. While I don't necessarily agree with everything he said, I respect the fact that he said it in a friendly manner.

This game supports questers, farmers, power gamers, twinks, tradeskillers, you name it. There is no single way EQ is supposed to be played, that's part of its appeal. It really all depends on how the inidividual chooses to play the game.

I havent done the quest, and may not. The responses to Ralston's post make me think he must have hit pretty close to the mark though. I can't see any other reason for people to resort to insults instead of discussion. I beleive it is good to hear the different opinions people may have. I also believe there is no honor to be had from unprovoked personal attacks.

If you want it, get it. The Fiery Defender is a righteous blade no matter how you view the quest, but no one is an inferior player simply because they choose not to pursue their epic. There are lots of things to do with your eq time.

Those who skip this difficult and time-consuming effort will only increase the pride and prestige of those who do complete the epic. It wouldn't mean nearly as much if everyone was running around with a flaming sword.

It's ok to disagree, but isn't it possible to do so without being mean?

Regardless of how good this sword is, it's a necessary step to getting the epic. You're not likely to get a better weapon to drop for a pally if you're not playing this game pretty seriously. I was using a Massive Dragonclaw Shard and a Sarnak Battle Shield, and I'm happily giving them to my brother now that I finished this quest.

Second. There are no free lunchs. You and your "friend's" are not going to camp a pally sword better than the Defender, I don't care what lvl/class/uberness you are. Short of a long raid to NToV or some of the highest lvl luclin areas, there are pretty much no weapons better than this for a pally. And if you're a lvl 50 pally, and not a twink I doubt you're going to be seeing those weapons.

Third. There is a definitely sense of accomplishment in doing this quest. It's a mark of both your knowledge of the game, the dedication to get a job done. Even if you don't do it, and keep it in the bank, it's the satisfaction that you completed something that very few other people do.

Fourth. The epic is a reflection of you. It says a lot about you. Many good 55+ guild will ask if you have your epic, for just this reason.

Regardless of what class you are it's your epic, because it's hard to get. And there is definitely more pride in something that you earned, versus something that you were given, or ebayed, in some of your cases.
