Me, lvl 46 ranger, and my friend Maheil, 36th wizard, did this quest with the greatest of ease. Being very careful however. The raptors can be fear kited.) We killed three Tigeraptors and one Raptorsaurus, the guts dropped off the Raptorsaursus... easy. Next we pulled the holgroshes to around the Goenid cave entrance. BTW the elementist are by far the easiest to kill. Stick dropped on fourth kill! Also note the Raiders are pretty damn tough. Hit consistantly for 200 dd.... we ran, take no risks. If you could stun them would be no problem, but they cast fast and furiously. Whole quest was completed in less than three hours with a skeleton of a crew. LOL! Would like to thank my guild brother Maheil! Hail Forgotten!!!!
BTW thanks everyone for posting, made my job easy!)

After finding out about this item, I knew I had to have one. So I assembled a guild mini-raid for our midlevel players to "farm" it.

First of all a ranger or druid is essential (wow, don't hear that very often). Second of all, you have to do this in a group unless you are extremely lucky (don't bet on it).

The first problem we encountered was getting to WL in the first place. We had to run through Kael while SoW'ed and Camo'ed. We all know how reliable camo is don't we? Well, it took our party almost an hour to cross Kael without having to run back to EW zone because camo dropped. Once we got to WL, we ran all the way across (lag was horrible) to SS zone. Camo dropped many times and we ended up with a few extra puma pelts.

Once at SS zone. We bound in SS and began the raid.

Rangers and Druids excell here as they can snare and panic the raptors. A fleeing raptor is MUCH easier than going toe-to-toe with one. After killing all the raptors that hang out just north of the SS zone, and killing any raptor we had on track, it was clear that the guts were not gonna drop. Two hours killing raptors and no guts dropped. I came back for three more days to solo them but no guts dropped. Finally, after the last mega-patch, I got the guts to drop on the very first raptor I killed. WOOT!

Now, on to Holgresh. I brought along all my resist gear. They melee like girls, so you don't need AC at all. Just put your resist gear on and buff yourself with anything that helps against fire (mostly) and magic. Ignore their pets, and go straight to the monkeys themselves. Rangers and Druids can buff for fire, which is key here. Also, any class that can stun them is critical for the party. As a Paladin, I just sat back and chain stunned them while the rest of the party layed the smackdown. They are nukers so killing them is easy as long as they are kept from casting.

The pole dropped three times in a row, although it happened after about 90 minutes (and three cave spawns) of killing Holgresh.

On to Iceclad Ocean. The gnoll fisherman DOES NOT WANDER. He hangs out with the other fishermen, looks JUST like all the other fishermen, is named excatly like all the other fishermen and can always be found at the exact same spot. Hail all the fishermen and he will be the only one who mentions a curse. Hand him the guts and the pole. A big fat walrus spawns right on top of him and begins to attack YOU. It was mid-blue to me at 44, and hit no harder than an average blue mob at level 44. All the little green fishermen start attacking it so you may get KS'ed if your party did not land the final blow (it doesn't matter though, just as long as the gnoll fisherman does not die). I even attacked the gnoll fisherman by mistake, and he fought back, but just ignore him (he's low green).

Once the walrus dies, the fisherman becomes an "agitated" fisherman. The first time we did it, we were KS'ed by the fishermen and thought the quest was over. Then we noticed that one of the gnolls had a different name ("agitated"). Hailing him gives him away too. Tell him "I still want the magic item" and he will imediately despawn, leaving you with a piece of paper on your cursor.

The rest of the quest has been described previously and is trivial. Find the npc's in question at the gnome pirate camp and do the hand-ins.

***We did the quest three times in a row. The respawn time on the gnoll fisherman is 12 minutes. Also, the quest can be MQ'ed when turning in the guts and stick.***

+++Also, if you trigger the effect while fighting, your melee attacks stop just like if you were casting any spell. The cast time is three long seconds with no recast timer. You have to use it while in melee range, and you can be interrupted. So, if you want to give up all your melee damage for three seconds, just to cast a 15dd, then go ahead.

Soloed this quest at 45, about the only thing I would add tho is that the fisherman does indeed wander at times, so just run around looking for a fisherman who responds to hails with some babble about helping with the curse. Monkey boys are easy as long as you do them right. Almost due west of the cave entrance next to the wall is a nice flat spot with no spawns and no wanders, just pull them singly to there from the valley and the cave entrance and in no time you will have your stick. The raptors can be either kited or root nuked by most casters... melee may have a bit more trouble so recommend teaming up if you are a melee... they hit pretty hard for their con and are fast as hell. Good thing they root easy and don't seem particularly resistant to poison or disease ;).

AE nuke the monkeys
# Feb 18 2002 at 7:21 AM Rating: Decent
I just finished this quest the other night. I'm a 48 Ranger, but I had a cleric, bard, monk, 56 Enchanter, and 55 Druid with me. We started single pulling from the Holgresh cave but nothing dropped and the pathing is horrible (sometimes if you try to pull them out of the cave they'll disappear but keep nuking you, and then if you try and nuke them back you can't find their corpse when they die).

So after the cave was clear and nothing had dropped, (about 15 of them in there I think), we decided to wait for a full spawn in the cave, then just run in and AE nuke all of them. It worked, but we had some really close calls with HP. After they were all dead though, about 5 or 6 Strong Wooden Branches dropped, so everyone in the party who can wear Ice Forged Shackles got a Branch. You can do this though, it just takes a little strategy.

The tigeraptor part is easy. I got the Strong Raptor Gut in less than 10 kills.

I just got mine today. I'd been working on it for about 6 levels now (i'm lvl 46) I got the Strong Raptor Gut with great ease using my 52 ranger friend (you pretty much gotta have track for this quest)the stick, thats a different story. I killed about 6 of them after i got the gut but none dropped so beign the impaitnet person i left. Well i was in a good mood so 6 levels later i went back with my now 55 ranger friend and killed a one. First one we killed had a stick. it blew me away. i happily trotted over ti IC and handed it all in. Great stats (halfling/rogue) which i thinl personnlay makes up for the horrible effect. Still, its kinda kool goign into a place like freeport and blasting these rats away with 12 dmg. Fir us non casters its still fun to play around with too. And btw, when you are fihting the Holgresh (flying monkeies) loot all the Mojo sticsk the yrock they all have different eccts each with 5 charges, they are fun to plau around with. nuke the monkies with their own speels, ahh...great fun great fun
Casting during battle
# Jan 26 2002 at 5:26 PM Rating: Default

From my understanding, you can fight during casting. However, you can't BASH.
Since I am a SK, I can't kick or do any other kind of attack beside hacking and slashing. So I can't tell you if you can kick or whatever during casting.

Vampire Embrace's shadow and the new Luclin version's effect are pretty much instant casting. But if you move, the casting will be interrupted. Yes, it happened to me couple times.

So I hope this helps and clear things up.

YES! I feel your pain! Iksar can't wear it! AGAIN!!!!! Velious just isn't too Iksar friendly!
It's a very nice bracer, even without the effect, especially on a PvP server! FOOOOOOK! From what I can see, I don't see any compensation for outcasting Iksar on these decent loots =(

No, you can't fight, you just use defensive skills, such as riposte, which will hit a mob. That's why you swing directly after casting, if you have any doubts of this, equip a slow 2 handed weapon, and the cast a long spell.

Sup guys, just a little info for you all trying this quest, The Guts are pretty easy to get, they drop quit often, off tigaraptors(just a little to the right of the Skyshrine zone, you can see them from the ent to the tunnel). The "Strong Stick" drops off of the holgresh's, also in Wakening lands, you know its the right stick, because its the only stick they drop that is NO DROP!!!!!! Gettin this stick is the toughest part, they add a lot, i recommend taking a druid, and pulling to the wall just behind the dragon rings, very safe place without adds. I got the Guts on first try, and the stick on the 4th kill. I got really lucky, and dont expect to get the stick that fast.
Anyways, the on thing that was bustin my balls, was searching for the wandering Gnoll Fisherman. Its not a Wandering Gnoll Fisherman, and it doesnt spawn randomly throughout Iceclad. thats what i was told, but that is wrong. He spawns down by the shore, near the Gnolls that are right next to Tower of Frozen Shadow!!! He is a regular Gnoll fisherman, there will be a lot of them, but the one you give the Guts, and the strong stick to, is the one that answers to "What Curse" i got that info from a previose post, and would like to give credit where credit is due, but i forget his name. Anyways, say that to every Fisherman, and the one that replies is the one you give the Guts and stick to. An Enraged walrus will emediatly spawn. Make sure that everyone helping you is FM cuz it resists, just like the walrus's in Eastern Waste. Kill it, hale the gnoll that spawns after kil, and say, "I want the magic item" after that its a cake walk, and follow the rest of the posts as to where to turn the page in. Once you have killed the walrus(hardest part i believe, underconn lvl 40 high magic resists) its a cake walk. Hope this helps!!!

Oh yeah, the 'effect' is so damn cheesy, 3 reasons.

1. A whopping 12 to 14dd , /gasp *note sarcasm

2. Its takes 'bout 3 seconds casting time. Weak

3. You have to be within taunting range, go figure

One more thing- I immediately tried the proc on a green snow cougar, and it was resisted 3 straight times, before DD was dealt- and in the mean time, I coulda been hacking the cougar into chum.

>>>So, awesome, awesome item, just please forget about the silly effect.

If you use the effect or not this is still a nice wrist item. +10 AC + 5 Str Agi & Dex +30 Hp, and I like that it is no drop. At level 33 I am always acussed of being a twink, just because I worked hard for my armor. I hope that my resent questing for no drop will solve that.

wearing good armor dosn't make you a twink, buying it at lvl 1 makes you a twink.

Dude, how long have you been playing? You hotkey your wrist slot with the shackles and keep right clicking it during combat. An extra 12-14 dd every 3 seconds can add up a lot over the course of a 1 or 2 MINUTE combat. If you are attacking green stuff yes not very helpful but for a warrior to be able to get in a free DoT like attack is awesome. Could mean the difference in death and victory when fighting a yellow...

It's not a very good pulling tool since you have to be very, very close to use it. And secondly, since it has a casting time (3 seconds) you can't click it while running.

I don't have this item yet but I do have a Deepwater Bracer clickie stun 6 second cast and assuming the mechanics are the same, you do not swing your weapon while casting a clickie spell.

No, you don't. You ever seen a message that you hit between the "You begin to cast..." and the "...is hit by..." messages? You stop attacking during the cast. What I do when trying to bring something down as fast as possible, is to wait until I see a high damage hit (which I know is my primary wurmslayer) then cast my nuke, so I only interrupt offhand swings, since the wurmy is slow.

Um i dont play a warrior so im not to sure how it effects them but i can tell you that as A bard i can most certainly swing and hit while casting and even while right click effect casting...

Point in case Lute of howler which has a 12 second cast time and Singing Steel Breastplate which also has a 12 second cast time... I click these all the time in the middle of a fight and i most certainly am whacking the snot out of the mob while these effects are in the process of casting...

not being able to attack while casting for a bard would mean whe just sit there all day twisting since we are essentially permacasting...

You answered your own question. Since bards are so different (who else twists?) they are the exception. Bards can still swing and move while they sing. Since singing is technically spellcasting in EQ, this luckily carries over to item effects also. All other classes, both casters and melees, will not be able to do anything else while casting.
RE: Effect: velium shards *thumbs down*
# Mar 08 2002 at 5:50 AM Rating: Default
Bards are a different story, yes you can "cast" while running and fighting and still swing away, however with my SK, he stops swinging as soon as I start casting, I especially began to notice this when I tried using teh effect on my gaunts which is Vampiric Embrace during a fight (casting time on gaunts is like 8 seconds). I would totally stop dealing damage. So this item would definatly not be for the effect..

I reccommend this quest for its reward compared to its questing. Well worth it. Done in one shot. Alot easier if you have a friend with you, especially fighting the holgreshes.

The controversy over the 'wandering gnoll fisherman' ... there is none. Find a "gnoll fisher" with a pole in his hand, that responds to "What curse" after being hailed; and then the rest is cake, after taking out the enraged walrus.

Other than that, I followed the link to this quest to the T, and came out a happy ranger :)

Hi all.
I am 'bout halfway thru this quest. Like stated in the quest info link...You need 2 items. 1, a strong tiger raptor gut, which drops off both the Tigeraptors and Tigersaurus's. The second...a strong wooden stick, i believe...something like that, cant recall exact name but it is a drop off holgreshes...both mobs are located in Wakening Land. Getting the strong raptor gut is a breeze- seriously. I had 2 drop for me, though they are lore, within a half hour...and another drop for a friend withih bout 20 minutes, off a tigersuarus. Find the SS zone tunnel and camp there, because about 25 ft away are about 6 tigeraptor/tigersaurus spawn points...and I have had Very good luck at this spot

Now...the holgreshes. They are mean little terds. Being a 46 ranger, was 47 before starting quest... I can BARELY solo these flying monkeys and live. Bring a friend !! when fighting the holgreshes most definetly. The best place to pull these maggots is 1st..find there cave...its in the SW corner of zone...about 100ft from the zone wall. If you have track, which I highly recommend one of yer party members has, you should have np. So far I've killed about 30 of these caster monkeys, with no stick drop, just some weazy....weazy beads (neck slot). Also...buff up on your resists. Tread lightly cuz you can get alot of unwanted adds in this densely forested zone. Well hopefully ina few days, i will be posting a victory message here (fingers crossed) and tell you the low-down on how this quest worked for me, on Eci server. Take care, and good hunting.

When Velious first opened up, maybe 4 weeks after, a group I was in had a Ball of Velium drop in Crystal Caverns that also had the 'right-clickable' effect of velium shards. Our cleric got it, though if I'd known what it was my warrior might have wanted to roll... and he blasted stuff repeatedly from then on out constantly. Had a very fast recast time.
According to EQAtlas, it drops off the Crystal Webmaster. I can't recall what we got it off of, but we were in the Queen room. It's a very rare drop though, having just went and read the comments about it.
Just my 2 copper.

if you are correct about that ball, then it must have been changed in a patch. First off, the ball has a very long cast time, like 8 secs i believe. Second, you have to be in melee range to use it, so you cant even pull with it. And fianly, you cant use your weapons while you use it, so for 8 sec or so, you cant hit your target, makeing that item useless for melee's and even casters, considering the level you gotta be to get it, in relation to the spells your able to cast.
Keep the Bracer, forget the Proc.

My 47th level Ranger did the quest the other night and it's a very nice overall bracer. It gives bonues to almost everything a ranger needs. The only thing that's really disappointing is the proc itself.

The triggered proc only works if you are at melee range with the mob. So for all of you who had dreams of kiting a mob around using this triggered proc, keep dreaming because it's not going to happen. Moreover, it's not practical to use it during combat because it takes 2 seconds to cast a 9 to 12 point nuke; especially if you are duel weilding. And trust me, a some mobs can do a LOT of damage in the span of 2 seconds.

So, if you get this item, forget about hotkeying the proc trigger unless you plan on using it on some green stuff like an orc pawn. Just use the bracer normally and it still rocks. By the way, the item looks like it's a gold bracer on my wood elf ranger. I am not sure what looks like on the other classes/races.
Is it possible....

No. The holgresh casters will wipe the floor with you. Our team of 30-35's survived cause we had a good ranger and two clerics. As for the item itself, the proc is usable at level 35. I'm level 34, click the item, "You are not sufficient level to use this item."

This is indead a very nice item and even though it'd be great for a monk *grin* i'd be glad to have this on my wrist as any class.

This is definetly a fantastic item and i'm sure its a light source as well, and though its lore i'm sure paladins/rangers will have an items like runed mith bracer for 3str and a little wis.

9/10 - reason its not got a 10 is if verant think its something special it'll get nerfed : )
#REDACTED, Posted: Sep 04 2001 at 5:42 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This is a great item. Monks, and Iksars should be able to use this. If Iksar's can wear shackles from their monk quests, why can't they wear these shackles? They only weigh 0.5, and have more ac than most low end bracers. I really think Verant should change these so that monks, and more classes can use them.

#REDACTED, Posted: Jul 18 2001 at 4:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i am a ranger and this is a great item if you plan on practicing 2h slshing then try this. start swinging and when swing your 2hs cast this right after. say a fight last 60 sec and you swing every 3 sec you will get in 20 swings and 20 casts of 14hp spell do the math. thats 280 hp of unlimited casting -80 hp for disrupting and you got your self a sweet dmg dealer with a 2h slashing.
proc is good if you know how to use it.
