They do exist!
# Sep 03 2015 at 2:34 PM Rating: Decent
So I'm grinding in Iceclad on Project1999 and I've been there for several days killing cougar after cougar, the only thing I've seen drop so far is a rune and several skins of different quality. So as I'm sitting there on the ice recovering from my last encounter a kind enchanter runs by and gives me clarity and brilliance. After we chat and he leaves I look down to loot my last kill and sure enough, there is the earring! Not a bad day. :)
why eastern wastes?
# Feb 18 2015 at 2:34 PM Rating: Decent
I have never known this item to drop in eastern wastes. Snow cougars don't even spawn there.

Having hunted here solo as a bard from 25 to 32 so far, I've grabbed 4 earrings and 4 high quality pelts. Definately makes up for the lack of money
Bards
# Nov 09 2003 at 6:58 PM Rating: Decent
I have seen a lot of Bards wearing these earrings, and was wondering why? I'm a lvl 36 Bard, and I don't even see my mana bar move when twisting songs. Was just wondering why so many bards are wearing these nice earrings???
RE: Bards
# Nov 19 2004 at 7:12 AM Rating: Decent
That is because bards would round up the NPC that drops this and use a PB AE DOT songs to finish them all off. Maybe have 10x A Snow Cougars.

Although this has been fixed since I've posted this, so it cannot be done anymore. PB AE Bard DOTs no longer deal damage while the creature is moving.

I'm sorry to say Focus Effects do not effect bards. This is due to the fact bards use there instruments to improves there spells, and to great effect too. Seems unfair at first that they can have FE's but put into context with the power of some of the instrument it is understandable.

Bards get only get 3 spells: Solon's Bewitching Bravura at level 39, Denon's Desperate Dirge at level 43 and Call of the Banshee at level 64 that require mana. I'm not sure that focus effects help bard mana, and only being Mana Preservation I, these would only work on spells below level 20 and so would be no use in that way anyway.

That said, I believe the main reason why you see so many players wearing them is that there really not anything out there better for melees until you are prepared to spend several thousand pp on replacements, while these earrings can now be pick up for under 50pp if you shop around.
A Better Earring?
# May 27 2003 at 6:44 PM Rating: Decent
My level 38 Beastlord has one of these but the "Mana Preservation I" effect only works on spells up to level 20 and I no longer really cast spells that level. Any suggestions as to how I should upgrade my ear slot (that just sounds rude :).

i have been quadding these things for 4 lvl's now i am a 38 druid, i started at lvl 34 with the quads and i haven't seen one drop yet, i have killed about 50+ of them and no luck,

i am at the cougars near the tofs, do they drop here or do they drop at the other little gnome camp thing
About a 2% drop rate on CC earings off of cougers
# Oct 17 2002 at 2:11 PM Rating: Excellent
Sadly hon, the drop rate of of the cougers is about 2% or 1 couger in 50. Having speant neary a week camping the evil stormfeather (missing 7 spawns due to guild raiding reqts ..gah) I would often hunt snowcougers to pass the time. I can confirm that they are still dropping off of cougers in that area (vic TOFS). Just keep plugging away and you will get one in due time.

I am actually level 34(and 3 yellow) and been hunting there since level 34 and got 2 of them and a bloodstained fang. I guess I must be a lucky shaman :)

Monk and shaman duo went from 31 to 32 (4 yellow bubs) and netted 4 CF Earrings, two Fangs, and 8 HQ pelts off those cougars (con dark blue).

We may have been lucky, but we probably killed 100 or so cougars, so 4% in our case.

Exp wasn't bad, and some downtime was required to let shammie med up, once we got KEI for her, we killed non-stop 'til we reached lvl 32.

They hit the monk for 40-60 damage, monk had 1000 HP, a Goranga Spiked Club and a Cane of the Tranquil.
what gives?
# Sep 23 2002 at 4:42 PM Rating: Decent
Why do they design such a nice piece of jewelry and make it useless. If you have to defeat a level 30 character, most likely it comes in a mob, just to get an earring that is useless to you by the time you get it. Mana preservation I works on spells below 20, but how many of us level 30's use level 20 spells?
RE: what gives?
# Jan 06 2003 at 10:45 PM Rating: Default
Hybrids are still using level 20 spells at level 30. As an SK, I know at level 30 I was still using Fear, Siphon Strength and Scream of Hate. All of which are under level 20. Heck, at 47 I still use Fear and Siphon Strength.

And Shamans/Druids still use SoW up until.. well, forever. :)

Not really useless I would say...

Remember that a lot of good utility spells (many mage summon spells, the good old invis, lev, enduring breath, shadowstep, SOW, Root, many illusion spells, etc.) start as low level spells and are used by high level players quite a bit as they scale.

Any mana savings is a boon, even when the mana costs are small...
Tough drop...
# Aug 01 2002 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent
Well, a friend camped these guys with a character a few patches back...and used to get them about every 10 or 20 cougar kill. Now-a-days, at least on SolRo, they have become quite rare. He went through 3 levels at the pirate/gnome camp and no earring.

Of course, I tried for about 4 hours and luckily got 2 to drop. Sold one for 250, the other for 350, since it has a nice effect on it and has become quite rare (IMHO...)

Heck, my Druid alt ALWAYS sees it activate when donating SoW to someone (though you know how rare that is to do...hehehe...)
Which one?

ok im a lvl 31 pally and im hunting in iceclad trying to get myself some earings. i have already gotten two put one on but on my other ear i have a forrest loop so i was wondering whether i should wear the forest loop or the cougar claw earing being a pally i thought it would be the earing but any help would be apreciated
its a focus effect
# Jul 14 2002 at 11:11 AM Rating: Decent
mana preservation is a focus effect
mana preservation 1 means it works on spells 1 to 20
it ALWAYS works
for more information on focus effects see the nice list at caster's realm

Mana Preservation Stack? like I know FT does... Obulus Death Shroud, 2 Earrings, that'd be like mana preservation 5. I am a fear kiting SK and I know I see the difference with the Obulus Death Shroud... Just wondering, does it stackwith other MP items?
RE: Hmm
# Jul 14 2002 at 10:55 AM Rating: Decent
Don't think so, I have one of these and a Black Alloy Medallion, when I equip the medallion first and then the earring, I only get the focus message for the earring and my mana gets used up faster (B.A.M. has mana preservation 2, this only has 1)

Nope, its your imagination. All of the mana preservation effects reduce mana use the SAME amount, the II and III versions just work on higher lvl spells. MPII works on spells thru 40, and MPIII works on all spells through 60. The reduction is the same. If it seems like the MPII is saving more mana, its probably becaise you are casting spells over lvl 20. Put an MPI item on a lvl 19, then swap it for an MPII item. they will have exactly the same effect. And no, 2 or more items will not stack.

Tricky earrings
# Jul 07 2002 at 5:55 PM Rating: Decent
I hunted snow cougars from level 30-35. During that entire time I didn't get one drop. Actually, I did, on the 3rd to the last snow cougar I ever fought for experience. I was very pleased, because I was convinced I would never return to the place I had spent so much of my solo days. Well, as I was traveling through the other day, I thought I'd show the cougars how tough I'd become and killed one. What do you know, an earring dropped. I'm not complaining though, I wear 2 of them now. The stats aren't that great, but this mana preservation thing is nice. Does anyone know how much mana it actually preserves? I don't know if having 2 earrings helps, but it kicks in all the time, atleast 3 outta 5 casts. I'd wear these or keep them for an alt, they rarely drop and don't sell for much at all. If only everyone hunted cougars at one point, then they'd see how valuable the damn thing should be.

drops off of these cougars
# Jul 01 2002 at 2:19 PM Rating: Decent
i have killed tons of these things and have not yet seen ONE earing. the other day a bloody cougarfang (definatley not a weapon to think of using) and that was after weeks of fighting there. i kinda like the mana preservation because if i snare something, root it, i have enough range on my spells already to hit them with another root and back up a bit.... BUT i agree extended range would be much better for me (a ranger) but about the loot.... it is definatley not anything to brag about (no money and sometimes you get the MQ pelts which are no drop) BUT the exp for me is amazing and thts wht matters....you level up and then go somehwere higher that might have loot :).....oh man, ive been rambaling, sorry

safe travels to all, safe hunting, may your deity be kind to you (if your evil may it torture you till your extatic)

i just love how everyone talks about which is better.. orcfang or cougar claw. What people don't realize is, there are caps to things like ac, and stats, after which the benefits of raising it any higher don't matter anymore. Depending on the other equipment you have, either one of these earrings could be the best fit for you. If you've already got 1200 ac, then the extra hitpoints will probably be more desireable.. if you haven't reached that cap yet, then you might prefer the ac. I mean, i'm looking at this from a druid's perspective.. i've traded out a couple items that add extra wisdom for items that add raw mana.. albeit less mana than the wisdom would add. Why? because i've already reached the wisdom cap, so i prefer to have raw mana added. I'm sure the same thing goes for warriors and HP/AC (i know it's not the same relationship exactly.. but i'm sure there are correlations)

Ok, so let me get this straight? at lvl 35, you have already exceeded the 255 wisdom cap? Yet you think that someone with 1200 ac might actually be considering either this or an orc fang?

First I find it doubtful you have hit the Wis cap. Second, anyone with good enough gear to have 1200 ac, will have MUCH better earrings than this.
