So far away, goodbye extended range
# Jun 06 2002 at 4:21 PM Rating: Excellent
Well after the second patch they've gone and removed the extended range III and replaced it with mana preservation I. Oh well here was to thinking my Ranger would get something out of this patch.

Now how stupid is that? Put a lvl 20 and under affect on a lvl 30 item... VI is clearly losing it's mind.

I completely agree, this level 20 and below spell allows me to snare, and flame lick my heart's content. Honestly I would really like to see some ranger love soon, like a ranger pet; a ferret or something that auto forages and increases you CHA by 30 points.
RE: So far away, goodbye extended range
# Jun 08 2002 at 2:36 PM Rating: Decent
oooo Ferrets are so cute...if it was a ferret it'd have to be worth at least a 50 CHA boost, and then at high lvls mabye they'd give you a chinchilla(sp?) or a hedgehog...how come there are no cute animals in EQ? I mean even hanging around the shop keepers or whatever? there's the halfling who has the attack dog in Rivervale but that's not exactly cute, they could have at least put some kid in the back of a house with a tank and a pet fish..they could have actually done THAT...bummer

how do you set up auto-forage?
RE: So far away, goodbye extended range
# Jun 28 2002 at 5:09 PM Rating: Decent
Under your keyboard options you set a movement key to also fire the hotkey that corresponds to forage. For example, my move right key is D and my forage hot key is the uppermost right hot key (user key 2 i believe its called ). I set my keyboard option for user key 2 to be D as well. Now, whenever my forage button pops up, all I have to do is press my right movement key (which happens frequently anytime your fighting or walking) and my forage button will also fire. I also do this on sense heading for my left movement key and for mend on my low level monk. Great way to get skill up and make certain that your hot key isnt sitting in the up position when it could be down, helping raise your skill.

What does Extn Rng III do?
RE: Focus Effect
# Jun 05 2002 at 3:43 PM Rating: Decent
Extended ranger, according to other sources, gives your spell casting range and extra 15%. Which is really nice. The real question is, does it stack as I wear to cougar claw earrings? Guess I can try some stuff out with grasping root and answer my own question.
RE: Focus Effect
# Jun 05 2002 at 3:54 PM Rating: Decent
Well I logged in, rooted a mob, backed away as far as possible then started working my way in until I could hit it with flame lick. Once I was in range I removed my second cougar claw and was still able to cast at that range. So it doesn't appear to be stackable.

If my finding appear to be incorrect, let me know what you find.

I went to Iceclad last night with my now level 28 bard. I kite the cougars in groups of 3 which means it's kinda awkward to loot these things if 1 drops before the others, the fast decay rate is appauling. Anyway I spent 30 mins last night near the igloos and kited 6 in total (thats 6 cougars) I only looted 5 of them, the second 1 I looted had an earring, I couldn't believe my luck, 10 minutes after arriving I loot 1. Well I camped for the night after the 30 mins and went on again today for another 30 mins, and kited 6 more, and could I believe it!? I got another!!! Thats 2 earrings in 1 hour = 400pp in an hour. Being only level 28 I am far from displeased hehe ;)

I killed over 200 of the cougars in IC and no stinkin drops. How rare are these things and you can argue the gnoll fang thing all you want but im a ranger and the dex would do me alot better than 15 hp.btw im huntin em near the igloos should i move to the other island?
cougr vs orc fang
# Apr 19 2002 at 3:48 PM Rating: Decent
I'm not sure what the big wonder is. Maybe this would clear some things up. I know on Rallos Zek the orc fang earring is considered suffnicantly supior to this thingy. Why? The HP keeps you alive! True, dex is not valueless...put 2 dex vs 15hp? lol, on Rallos, that's a no-brainer. Plus, at lower levels, 15HP is worth more and more...when I create lower level twinkies, the cougr fang earring? Ya, the +3str would give me about +1% attack damage. Big whoop, hitting iwth a 22dmg cap anyways. (by the way...the orc fang earring matches this str!) +2dex? a 1 in 50 better chance at hitting? O, great! 4ac? Same on orc fang again. So, 2dex or 15hp? To a level one, that's asking +1 in 50 chance of hitting, or nearly double your life? Ofcourse, no brainer! =) A set of them is nice at +30hp and everythign but dex from cougr. So, I would prefer a Wurmy even though you could agrue the CLS has slightly better stats. (anology) If you prefer the dex tough, go for it
RE: cougr vs orc fang
# Jun 02 2002 at 5:49 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, besides the fact that AC is king for any tanking class ( 8ac pair -vs- 6ac pair ). When mobs start hittng you in the 100's, even if that 2ac difference prevents you from taking 1 hit it is way more usfull than 30 extra hps. Also, my Pally would have grabed these just to help the proc go off more often when I go up against undead. (Ghoulbane)+(Instrument of Nife)= 404 proc dmg :p
RE: cougr vs orc fang
# May 03 2002 at 3:08 PM Rating: Decent
1) orc fang earing has 3ac not 4

2) At low levels, max hit points are irrelavent unless you die before the heal goes off (CH is the only reason max hps mean anything, again unless you're against a mob that can kill you before you are healed). Example one toon has 800 hps another has 1000, they are both tanking the same mob with a non CH cleric. They both take 500 damage, and are then the cleric then heals each for 500 hps... what's the difference? If you're of level to group w/ a 39 plus cleric hps become important until then go w/ ac. btw if the lower max hps toon had higher ac he actually would save the cleric mana becasue he would take less damage from the mob =). Now if you know that you are gonna be getting down to your last 30 hps in a fight by all means take the orc fang.

3) Wurmy vs CLS. 2 completely different weapons. The wurmslayer(a primary hand only weapon) is one of the best pre-level 40 1hs in the game. Post 40ish your damage bonus is high enough that the 40 delay in a primary only weapon makes it worthless (buy a lammy or a jade mace). The CLS (equipable in either melee slot)is a bad weapon in the primary for the money at any level. However, as a secondary weapon it rocks. Delay is only important in the secondary for taunt purposes as the damage bonus only applies to primary hand. Therefore the wurmy is a good primary at low to mid levels and a CLS is a good secondary at all levels, apples and oranges bro. btw the stats also complement the levels at which you would use the weapons AC for wurmy, stam(=hps) for CLS

4) comparing 2 earings is not the same as comparing a primary weapon against an off hander.

that is all
Use of Earrings
# Apr 17 2002 at 12:20 PM Rating: Decent
The value of the earrings are debatable. I have a set of both on my Shadowknight, the cougar claw is better for groups where I am not MT or raids, but when soloing, I like the hps better, most of the time the mobs are feared ;) Also, my necro likes Orc fang because of the hps as well. There are many uses, and depending on the other gear you have, there are cases where orc fang are better. Its like arguing that Owlbear Claw earrings are better than Cougar claw. Just my 2cp :)

On E'Ci you're luck to get 100p each for them. People seem to want the Orc Fang more. (don't ask me why) For a melee type they are much better IMO.

When I first got to Velious and started looting them I could get 300-400p each, prices have dropped thru the floor :(

Its real simple. Orc fang earrings are cheaper, typically. Also, Orc Fang Earrings have a HP buff that monks love. AC and HP are more important to most monks I have talked to than stat buffs. Rogues, on the other hand, love Cougar Claw Earrings because they buff the 3 areas we value most: DEX, STR, and AC (in that order).
RE: price
# Apr 18 2002 at 11:42 PM Rating: Default
DEX, STR, AC in that order?

WTF are you thinking?

Dex only affects ranged and procing...has no effect on melee...except for skill gains

STR however raises atk

AC keep you alive

Try this order...

STR, AC, HP, AGI, STA, DEX
(move dex up if using procing gear)

And FYI 15 HPs is worthles....1 AC 1 STR and 2 DEX is much better then 15 hps 20+

And I have 4 50+ chars....so I'd know
RE: price
# Jun 21 2002 at 3:38 PM Rating: Default
Always thought that dex also was the chance to hit your max dmg in melee... which would be useful for a rogue's backstab... str = higher dmg cap... dex = better chance to hit that dmg cap... Why not everyone go make a barb rogue since they have higher str then? :P
RE: price
# Apr 19 2002 at 1:51 PM Rating: Decent
Don't give us the "I have 10 lvl 60 characters so I'm the GOD of EQ stats and info" excuse...

I've seen plenty of idiots above lvl 50 that STILL don't know how to play their characters...

Clerics that run around like an idiot if a mobs on them... Chanters that want to buff and not mezz when needed... Warriors that never trained taunt... there's plenty of them...

BTW 15 hps may be worthless, but on numerous pieces, a lot of HPs can be accumulated, and at lower lvls (and cheaper prices) orc fangs can easily be accepted over cougar claws.

and BTW, does DEX effect Backstab? cause I'm sure if it does, Rogues will be moving DEX up a little higher on your "perfect" list... and I love how you ignored resists on that list too.

I think that would completely depend on the server. On mine, it's highly doubtful... IC's usually almost empty, with maybe a few farmers and/or soloers. EW is also usually soloers or higher level Ry'Gorr groups. I wish you luck. I still have a pair of these that I soloed at 35. ;)

How come this doesn't show 15hps. Do these have hps, i know on another server it shows that these have 15hps. which one is correct, i would only trade in my orc fang earring for this if it has the hps.

Hehe, better is debateable. I know a 60th Warrior in an uber guild who still wears an orc fang earring. Why? +15 hp. After a certain point, AC stops mattering, and with uber shaman/chanter buffs, your dex is out of sight anyways. So, to survive those big hits, and make cheal more effective, HP's are were its at. If you are lower level, then the orc fang might be better, especially for a rogue with a proc'er or something.

Must not be an uber guild or an uber warrior, even the smallest AC bonus is worth more than 15hp, at lvl 60 even more so. In NToV with mobs hitting for 400+ i dont think 15hp is gonna help too much, but AC will. Also, its pretty clear that you're BSing, not mentioning the name of the warrior or the guild...and thinking that AC doesnt matter, sheesh.

First off this has 1 more AC then the orc fang and secondly I am a 52 warrior I have both couger claw and orc I never wear teh cougar you say 15 HP isn't much I just finshed Vox the other day with 7 HP the other day as the MT and I zoned in SolB dragging corpse of raid partners from the buff room to zone again zonin with 20HP I solo the rockgrabbers in DSP and often end up with only 150-20 HP depending on the fight and if I have to zone cause of adds I doubt one AC will make a difference. Also AC is not King in NToV what tank told you that it is resists that make a difference there not so much AC unless you are main tank even then you do have a soft cap at 1200 sort of like casters who go for raw mana after they reach a certain amount of wisdom/intelligence...It is true I am not uber but at 52 15 HP has made a difference more tehn once this week alone so stop with this BS and just play your own game the way you do!

RE: Hps
# Apr 17 2002 at 11:55 PM Rating: Good
Actually once you hit the soft AC cap of around 1100-1200 AC, HP becomes much more desireable then AC at higerlevels. Additional AC does very little in terms of damage reduction. So many warriors start switching out AC items for HP items once they reach the cap. Notice the changes on castersrealm creation guides where they are basically recomending you put all your starting points into STA for the HP. I agree that 15hp off one item is not that much, but it does add up once you get more hp on several items. This is why crusty armor is considered an upgrade to crafted even though it has less AC.

#REDACTED, Posted: Apr 18 2002 at 10:51 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) you're stupid as ****, go try being a warrior, and getting hit for anything above 100, and tell me if a worthless 15hps will keep you alive, then change it out for something with more AC or AGI to raise AC, and STFU and listen to the people who know.... moron

sure you can solo these at 30, I did it with my SK for a bit, but the kills are slow, the xp sucks, and the chance of one dropping the earring sucks killing at that rate, you would likely have to solo for hours just to see one drop. much better things you could be doing with your time at level 30.

How is 3AC, 3str, and 15hp better than 4AC, 3str, and 2dex? The Cougar Claw Earrings have 1 more AC, equal strength, and 2 dex instead of 15 hp. 15 hp won't do you much good when mobs hit for 40 each time.

New Oberservations on Drop Rate
# Dec 04 2001 at 5:45 PM Rating: Decent
I had posted before about these not dropping too often. It was kind of frustrating. Well, the other day I was grouped with a 36 necro, a 32 Mage, a 32 wiz and a 30 enchanter. We were chain pulling these things, killing tons of them. We were pulling all the cougars that were popping in the area near the igloos. Well, after a few hours we had killed many, many cougars and nothing dropped. Then one dropped (I lost the roll). Two cougars later another one dropped (I WON THE ROLL FINALLY MY FIRST EARRING!). Next one we killed after that another Cougar Claw Earring. Wow, that was practically 3 in a row. About 8 or 9 cougars later yet another earring dropped. That's 4 cougar claw earrings in about a 20 cougar span.

My conclusion is that when one drops there will be some more dropping real soon. Then it goes dry again for awhile. So, you just have to hang in there.

M'Lady (30 Cleric) and I (30 Warrior) went and lost our Velious Virginity last night hunting Snow Cougars by the Gnommies in Iceclad last night. In roughly 3 hours of hunting we killed 25 of the pretty white kitties and looted 1 of the Earrings. A friend of mine was over there a month or so ago and in 4 hours of more heavily hunting came up with 4 earrings.

As for the mention of price, they seem to be running around 150pp to 250pp on on Morell Thule right now with most falling right in the middle. See a lot of "200pp or 350pp for the Pair" deals.

Unlikely, but not impossible. The odds of a snow cougar having one are about 3%, but it's still a dice roll on each snow cougar. Just like in RL gambling, you can have runs of good or bad luck. You might fight cougars for days and never get one, or you might get 9 in four hours. It's not necessarily bull@#%^ as you claim.
