Proc Debate
# Aug 01 2004 at 1:04 PM Rating: Good
We are talking about a Velium Greatstaff here. Not any other itme. It begins to cast Shards of Velium when you are in your 25th Season. There is no debate needed. There are lots of Velium items in the world(s). This is only one of them. It is heavy, slow, and if you are a caster who's season is high enough to make this item proc, you have no buisness using a 2 handed melee weapon.
It is nice if you want to train 2 hand blunt. I recomend finding a high level hunting group and asking them if you can whack on something that they are fighting while not being a member of their group. Make sure it has a red aura to you. ** You never know when you'll be out of mana and have forgotten your Primary and Secondary items, and just happen to have a two handed staff. Then when you are attacked by something, you could pummel it into jelly....*** It could happen.... It could.... Be safe... or die well.
Coldain Velium Great Staff

While the regular Velium Great Staff isn't bad, the proc won't work for quite some time. However, the Coldain Velium Great Staff procs at level one. In addition, it has a 36 delay and 10 damage rating, so it hits a little harder than this regular one. The Coldain weapons can be purchased in Thurgadin, the dwarven city on Velius. With the portal from the Nexus and the invisibility spell, you should be able to make it to Thurgadin to buy one of these, assuming you are careful to avoid those wolves and giants on the way to the city. I believe the merchant sells them for around 140pp to 180pp or so. You might as well get the Coldain if you can afford it, since you'll be doing alot more melee during your lower levels before the regular one would ever proc. By the time you reach the level that the regular one procs, you'll probably have a Stein of Moggok in one hand, and won't be using a 2H blunt any longer except in emergencies.

Aarrgh!

How many times have I seen this debate??

All ordinary Velium weapons (not Coldain) proc at level 25. Not before and no ammount of clicking will change it.

Although one does wonder why you have to wait to level 25 to get a 12 damage effect.

Great Staff for the Youngings
# Jun 22 2001 at 8:54 AM Rating: Excellent
This staff I great for lvls 20 and below. Just like the Ruined Great staff. But several things need to be set straight, before you go searching for it. This staff like many of the staffs and now that I think of it, many of the equipment that casters get, are more like tweaking items. Tweaking items you say? Yep, that right. What I mean is, casters get the short end of the stick, so to speak. This item bought from a merchant is about 82 plat. The problem is, if you look at the stats, by the time most caster get that kind of cash flow, it would be time to upgrade to a better weapon. The second problem is getting it for free. And like most things casters get, are obsolete by the time you get it; one comes to mind, is the Eye of the Observer Staff, you have to be in your mid 20 just to be able to get through the quest. And this staff that we are talking about, you have to be in your mid 20's just to be in The Great Divide (Velious), and higher to get it.
On the other hand, I mentioned tweaking, and like all caster stuff, it's a little off scue from your chr. lvl. But if you have a high lvl. chr., and you plain on starting a new chr., this is the way to go. My Mage comes to mind; I took my lvl. 60 SK to Velious and got some stuff there, and took my high lvl shammy, and did some questes, to get some better robes.
My whole point in telling you all this is, casters, especially Pure Casters, really get the short end of the stick. You either have to be outragously rich, especially at lower lvl, to get stuff like this, or you have to cheat, by tweaking. A shammy is paying about 13 plat a pop for a spell at lvl 24. A pure caster is paying around that much, when he/she is 12 or 16; and to come up with extra cash....oh lets say for this staff, about 42 ave. or 82 pl. from a vendor, well, you figuare it out. Over all, the lvl that you can obtain stuff, wheither dropped, bought, or through a quest, are off by the stats. This is a very great staff for my lvl 11 Mage. And he can continue to use all the way up to about his 20's, but after that, then it's time to upgrade.
Some of you might be thinking, well I'm a pure caster, and so melee isn't my thing. Well then, when you stroll on into the Plan of Hate, tell me that again. Nothing is more scarer than being a tank, and seeing "oom" scrolling accoss your screen. Melee is a natural skill that everyone gets, and for casters to hold there own, just long enough for tanks and secondary tanks to get to you, helps alot, plus it saves your mana, because your not going to be able to get a spell off and your just wasting mana; when you decide to .....oh let's say....heal one of your groupmates and Cazic Thule and his goons didn't like your decision and come over to change your mind. There is a good reason why I ways telling you this story(not so much about the melee part), and it goes along with this staff and everything else that I was saying. You need to be two steps a head in this game being a caster. You need to obtain gear that you may not be able to get to until later in life, and you will have to keep your skills totally maxed out. Gear like this staff for example, is either a dream for a young caster, or a waste of time and effort for higher lvl. And tank chr. depend on casters; more than we let on. And not having that great gear could mean, your group lives or dies. And there's no doubt in my mind that, Pure Casters are paying some kind of Lvl to stat penalty in gear, for being one. And having read stat. pages like this one, people all over, saying the same things that I'm saying. It sucks....IT's great......blah, blah, blah. All-in-all, pure casters, need to be tweaked. Think about it this way, your making up for a penalty, that should be fixed!
It seems as though some don't read before they post.

I get such a kick out of watching all this confusion between ( COLDAIN velium ) and just plain ( velium )

The COLDAIN is listed seperatly and goes in the 150 plat range.

The forum I'm posting in is for the plain velium and it goes for 10 to 40 plat, although I think the people that paid 40 plat are fools.

P.S.
COLDAIN velium procs at newbie levels (I've seen level one mentioned....)

plain velium procs at level 25

Thank you for you time...

You can purchase a "Coldain Velium Great Staff" in Thurgadin, which is different from this staff. It's stats are as follows:

Coldain Velium Great Staff
MAGIC ITEM
Slot: PRIMARY
Skill: 2H Blunt ATK Delay: 36
DMG: 10
Effect: Velium Shards
WT: 10.0
Class: WAR CLR SHD DRU MNK SHM
NEC WIZ MAG ENC
Race: ALL

The staff above happily procs Velium Shards, 12hp DD, for my LEVEL 5 ERU WIZ.

And, it looks cool (ok, it looks frozen).

What is a Proc?

The damage cap for this weapon is at lvl 10 after lvl 10 you can hit for 19DMG MAX
RE: What is a Proc?
# Apr 11 2001 at 1:17 AM Rating: Default
A proc is a spell that will cast only if you have the will (level) to make it proc. Also some procs are right clickable so when you right click they will cast also. Velium weopans seem to proc around 25 so it will not be really useful to you until level 25.
RE: What is a Proc?
# Jul 04 2001 at 6:41 PM Rating: Decent
Actually a proc is an PRODUCED EFFECT when you right-click on an item that is called an EFFECT.

I started using the Velium Great Staff on my level 9 druid, and it procs very often. It has been proc'ing for two levels now (9 and 10). As you would probably imagine, I am twinked, so my 2HB is not as high as it should be. At level 10, it is only 32. So, it should be proc'ing for everyone. I know a friend that put one on one of his brand new level one chars to see, and it proc'd for him (when he actually hit something, hee hee). I have never gotten that "your will..." message.

I had one given to me with my Enchanter (Erudite, lvl 6 when I got it), and it hasn't proc'd either at lvl 6 or 7 yet. I heard from someone that it doesn't proc until around level 25 or so.

It could be that the proc is not level related, but some other characteristic.... Intelligence, Wisdom, etc...

Sorry i dont have exact info, but at least you have a ball park figure. Also the rygorr that wield these are around 30, so i guess it makes sense.

ok, I am a lvl 29 Enchanter. I was giving this weapon at my current lvl(29 in case you missed that). It proc's for me. From what I have read it proc's at 25 and does 12dd. I personnaly think Staff of Writhing is better,it proc's 48dd w/stun. So it has -9cha... I have spells now that will more than make up for that not to mention +cha items. And it is 1hd instead of 2. Also, if you group, as enchanter, you don't need a weapon (least not in a good group). I think this is a good low lvl weapon, would be great low level weapon if it proc'd much lower.

I agree. It's not tht great of a staff. Not even good for farming since it swings so slow compared to a 1HB.

But it's the best I have right now and will continue to use until a better one drops or actually make enough money to replace.
