Ruins of Kunark
I have my usual question about this quest step: how did anyone ever figure out that this gargoyle wanted new eyes? (I can imagine figuring what gems to give him by trial and error.) I thought maybe if I were amiable to him he'd respond to my hails and clue me in, but no, no response. Do I have to be allied to get him to talk, or is there someone else in the Outpost who talks about him, or what?
Edit: I tried the obvious first step, I asked Tektite! When I asked about "fragment of tektite", I got this response:
Tektite makes the sound of grinding rocks as he moves his mouth. You cough uncontrollably from the dust cloud it creates. 'YOU SEEK TO OWN ME?'
I tried saying yes, no, and "I seek to own you", as well as general stuff like "I will help you" and "What do you want", but didn't get any further responses. Does any of this ring a bell with someone who was there when it got figured out? Or does anyone have any ideas for figuring it out again now? Is the dust cloud supposed to be a clue?

Human/monk. I followed the advice here, invised in, position behind, FD, kick in sneak, stand and attempt hand in. All hell breaks lose. Tek starts wailing away on me, his buddy runs over, the guards rush in...whew! for FD at that point.
What am I missing? My sneak is extremely low, can that be an issue?

Tektite can be found at +2357 / +2431, was really easy used a Cloudy Potion (sold at vender) to get in. Then clicked sneak behind him and turned in Carnelians non stacked and shazam I have the piece of Tektite. This didn't even brake my invis. But then invis fell luckly a nero was there to help me out. With the PoK book just outside the outpost east wall this is simple to do. There is a group of undead in the SE corner inside the wall they are the ones that can see through normal invis so be carful there.

OK i tried the invis suggestioned and it failed 3 times. i died the first time. Yes i know why did i try it 2 more times. I wanted the wurmy that i guess that and i was trying to figure out what i did wrong. Other than being a 54 barb. warrior with no DE faction unless you want to count KoS a faction, LoL. But inivis didn't work nor wouold he take the stones when i clicked on him.So as a warning to those trying the invis becareful and have someone there who can help you in case you do try it.

It makes us indifferent to anyone whose back is turn to us.
When you tried to hand in the Carnelians invis, you clicked ok to give it to him and (unknowingly) dropped invis. That made you KOS again and get the whooping you got.
Get a person with good faction, or one of those types above to do it for you.

To get this you have to Pick up 2 Carnelian gems. Grab a friend to cast the Invisibility spell on you, at the entrance to the Evil Outpost (coming in from OT) you will see two gargoyles. Run into tunnel with invisibility and at the other end of the tunnel will appear two more gargoyles, with one having the name "Tektite." He wants a replacment for his eyes, and seeks two Carnelian gems. Run up behind him, Feign Death, ans hit sneak until it works. Get back up (Do NOT HAIL HIM) and hand him the two gems in separate slots. You will receive "Fragment of Tektite".

All but the foraged items in this quest are no_drop. Tektite, heart of ice, Unholy coldstone, Sulfurstone and I think jade magma too.
