Book Text:

Only a fool thinks of a
Halfling as nothing more
than a tiny bundle of
silliness. Their laughter
is certainly the most
common sound at their
gatherings, but a Halfling
takes matters of war as
seriously as they do any
party. The long tradition
of the Leatherfoot guards
is a testament to their
ability to take danger
seriously. Conflict,
however, is something that
these gentle folk prefer to
keep out of their daily
lives, and sometimes it can
be difficult to rouse a
settlement of Halflings
into the attitude needed to
deliver a war properly.
These volumes explore
in-depth the traditions,

symbols and organizations
of Halfling war. It shows
the tradition of symbols
and banners used in war,
focusing on insignia used
on armor.

This volume takes a deep
look into the modern day
symbols of Halfling
society. It compares them
to symbols used in the past
and explores the effect
they have on Halfling
society. It discusses the
use of masks and unusual
hats throughout Halfling
history and how the current
Leatherfoot style evolved.
The main focus of this
volume, however, is how
those symbols effect the
folk of Rivervale. It
distills those symbols,

through clever use of
analogy and anecdotes, into
one symbol that encompasses
the moral and physical
strength of modern
Halflings.

Among the pages of
discussion about these
symbols is a pattern. This
pattern distills the
symbols of modern Halfling
culture into a single
insignia that has powerful
meaning to the citizens of
Rivervale. You know that
you will be able to
reproduce this pattern many
times before the book
becomes worn and you must
replace it.

To create pattern for
tailoring armor templates

based on these patterns you
will need this book, a
large bottle of ink, a roll
of vellum, a quill and a
compacted backpack to hold
the patterns you will make.
You'll also need a book
binding to do the work.

Evil Eyes
# Apr 05 2005 at 9:32 AM Rating: Decent
The two evil eyes in the center of the maze are on a five minute timer. Both the regular evil eyes and Lord Syrkl or Lord Sviir vary on hp between 300 and 450 hp's. The evil eye pets seemed to consistently have about 325 hp. Killing either Lord does not count towards your 10 required kills on the task list, but they have to be killed anyway for respawn of a regular evil eye. If you do this during fabled season killing the Fabled Evil Eye does count towards your ten evil eyes that you need to kill. Like the minotaur quest, getting the PBB (Polished Bone Bracelet) took longer than 10 kills, so be prepared to spend some time here.
Task List
# Feb 23 2005 at 5:44 PM Rating: Decent
Here is the list of tasks for the Journeyman's Book of Halfling Culture:

1. Kill 20 Minotaurs
2. Loot 4 Minotaur Battle Axes
3. Return the Axes to Bill Whistletop
4. Visit the Ruins in the Middle of the Gorge
5. Kill 10 Evil Eyes
6. Loot 1 Polished Bone Braclet
7. Return the Braclet to Bill Whistletop

Easiest way I figured to do this (from a bit of trail and error) is to camp out right at the entrance to the ruins, there will be two minotaurs that spawn about every 9 minutes there. It might take more than 20 minotaurs to get the axes (took me about 40 myself).

As for the Evil Eyes, just move into the area of the ruins and pick off the Evil Eyes as they spawn on the sides of the ruins. The named eyes DO NOT count towards the evil eye count, so this might take you a bit. Nice thing was the Bone Bracelet dropped from one of the named, so that made that part easier. (Plus also killing them will help with the looting of optic fibers for the book quest)

I did these quests as a 39/40 lvl Cleric, so took me a bit at times, but a little over 6 hrs for the whole task.
