may sound like a silly question but on magelo it has a range of 124 on this bp and a range of 48 on the charged legs. does this mean they have an AoE? if so does it do any damage or is it just for graphics? this is a great bp but if it proc'd an aoe that would make it sucky pretty fast.

Is the magnetic breastplate returned on failure? If not, then this is potentially a heartbreakingly expensive and risky combine unless you have the appropriate Omens tradeskill AAs.
The risk is not too bad; even without Blacksmithing Mastery AAs, the %fail given max smithing (252) is 8%. That is the really odd thing about these new combines; unlike those from elemental planes recipes, they are very easy to make. Even a smith who hasn't spent a single AA on the skill and is capped at 200 still has a 50% chance of success.
The loss of the Magnetic BP istelf is trivial, they aren't that uncommon a drop. It would be the loss of the Lightning Cores that would be devastating. They are VERY rare drops in MPG; I have fought many hours in there and haven't seen one drop yet.
