this is actually pretty nice...actually, no, its not, but oh well, it really sucks as a wep from Skyshrine, but its not too bad for a lvl 30-40 or so, oh well...

I was standing around idling in Skyshrine today, and as a guild was raiding it someone shouted for any rangers to loot this nice baby from Yelinak.

Very lucky me, and a very nice weapon for level 45; the proc does work at this level.

the risk vs. reward for this item sucks bigtime hehe....a 10/19 of yeli!!?! hehe if it was a 11/19 or maybe a 12/19 then the people killing yeli might actually loot it. dont get me wrong its a good weapon, but risk vs. reward is horrible.

its not that good for something that drops off of yelinak the jolt proc isnt too reliable and lammy is only one less damage so they should bring up the damage or lower the delay some and make the proc cinder jolt instead of regular jolt
Ranger as MT?
# Mar 04 2002 at 8:00 AM Rating: Decent
" If the warrior(ac tank) dies during a fight, do you think a ranger could hold off a mob that just taken the warrior(ac tank)? "

We often hit arena with 1 group, and actually a ranger is most probably the best MT to have, simply because no other group member will be bothered by the target due to total agro retainment by MT. Snare mob regularly during fights. Lvl 57 (SoW / HB / Symb + self CoE/SoN) gives u 3.1k HP. Will be enough to outlive the mob, though I haven't tried anything harder than Veterans till now :)

RE: Ranger as MT?
# Oct 15 2002 at 8:14 AM Rating: Decent
They can parry disc and save the raid by generating aggro and buying enough time for another warrior to aggro it while everyone sits down and takes a break so that warrior can aggro. Then the ranger dies, the warrior takes aggro, the ch chain stabalizes. I would call it tanking
RE: Ranger as MT?
# May 09 2002 at 4:32 PM Rating: Default
Well I have not see the post containing that quote, but I will assume he is using it in the context of a MT on a hard raid. In which case there is no way a ranger can tank the mob..they have too little ac/hp and no defensive disc.
RE: Ranger as MT?
# Jun 24 2003 at 7:17 PM Rating: Default
umm... rangers can MT and i see it done , a higher lvl ranger friends on AB server does. he's lvl 65 and with 5k unbuffed can tank really well , and rangers CAN hold as much agro as they want just as easy as they can drop it.

I've seen him tank vindi many times and he does other mobs too , of course his guilds warriors have more , but when they killing vindi with like less than 2 groups , who cares

A weapon like this would be great for ranger, when I first got jolt I did not understand how it worked. For example, the msg, the mobs head snaps back yet will still be aggro on you. Someone explained its like a point aggro system and said it deducts 400 points from your aggro. If you are dishing way more dmg than the tank it would take several jolts to remove your aggro. Thats why a weapon that procs jolt and the jolting blades is useful it keeps your aggro down should they taunt on you and can't jolt off. I consider a ranger like a rogue, dealing big damage without taking the aggro.(or removing aggro by evading or jolting) Though I can never understand why rangers are heavily bashed because of low hp, high atk, low ac combo when rogues are the same way. They aren't meant to tank, they can be compared to a spell casting rogue.

The answer: Rangers can't do nearly the damage nor avoid aggro as much as rogues. Well they might get close to avoiding aggro with spells like jolt, but they still are way behind in damage. Rangers are a complicated class; too complicated for me to worry about at least. All I do know for sure is that if you have a ranger, you should play it as a ranger, not a tank, not a caster, and definitely not a rogue. They have abilities of each, but they're not especially good at any one of them.

Agreed Rogues in the 50+ game "can" outdamage a ranger, but I doubt very highly you have a clue about high end aggro management, with you rogue being only 32. Jolt > Evade IMHO...

Jolt - Low mana cost, fast can time, no recast Delay.
Evade - Timed melee skill, higher reuse timer than jolt.
Jolt - If resisted, you still have your agro reduced, just not by as much.
Evade - Failed Evade = No agro change

Rogues murder just about everyone in DPS though, having a slightly riskier method of agro management is understandable. And speaking on the subject of damage, rangers are in 3rd in melee DPS, behind rogues and monks. My job on a raid is DPS and keeping the necro/shammy alive, typically.
Rangers tanking is all about equipment though, I can tank perfectly fine in KC or lower velks. If you have worked on getting good AC/HP gear, (or resists depending on the area) you can tank as well as a warrior that went for all stat gear but no extra raw hp. After finishing both epics (which i'm still working on), rangers actually tank very well in exp'ing groups, 41% haste and a 55% slow built in are very nice (59 ranger was our MA in a Maidens group for a few hours, Earthcall = aggro)
Don't make judgement calls about people's classes when you still have "Rogue" as your class name, at least get to Rake or Blackguard, and then you can speak with some validity.

Thank you Daviv, I was begining to think that I was the only one that was seeing the big flick when it comes to a rangers (and each seperate class when taken further) purpose/non-purpose.

If one can only see a character in the forms of "healer", "tank", or "caster"; then one should only play a Cleric, Warrior, or Wizard. All the various character classes have different areas that they are helpful in. Trying to narrow it all down to simply healing someone, hitting something, and blasting something completely negates the usefulness of every other skill that a class may have.

Rangers in particular are a complicated class to play correctly (if there is a "correct" way to play them). The various spells and abilities that a Ranger gets allows for far more than just hitting a mob.

If all you are looking for is the three main areas of combat (hitting, healing, and nuking); then by all means stick with those three main classes. But, if you want to add a little bit of style to your group pick up some of the other classes that will allow you to go from a decent group to a group that's going to rock the socks off of anything that it comes across.
Nice

This weapon has the potential to be great. It also has the potential to cause a disaster, as it's proc is "Jolt", therefore-
In my opinion this whip should definately not be equipped full time. It would serve great as a utility weap, awaiting the situation to be pulled out of a back-pack. As a ranger of 53 seasons, I think one would be a fool not to want this whip in his/her ******** to be pulled out at the appropriate time. Great ratio, good str buff. Just
gotta know where and when to use yer blades )

Take this whip, add a Luppy for 9d 18 delay. Use the luppy in primary until it procs, then switch hands and the .1 delay becomes moot with the higher damage. No time, not even the usual 1.5 sec, lost to Jolt. This and a decent Dex, say 125 plus, and you can stand next to the primary tank and just rip things up; 1100+ atk with this and the luppy in greater wolf form and with 151+ strength, which should be easy for you to have at anything like level 45-50.
Now all you have to do is kill a level 65+ dragon, after wading through a templefull of baddies to even get near this guy...

So funny!!
# Jul 23 2001 at 8:49 AM Rating: Default
I know that alot of you will agree with me on this, these people would be the 55+ ones. This dragon is not an easy mob by far. Its not like downing trak or gore which take all of 10 seconds for an UBER guild to kill. This is one bad *** ****. I have no idea what that warrior was thinking when he said he wanted, youre a dumbass, youre a tank and supposed to take dmg, not jolt you moron. To quote a friend of mine "Rangers are like buzzsaws, too bad they dont have many hps." What this means is that with epics and aq or shissar, rangers can and will outdmg monks, i know i will get flamed for this but its true, without haste they wont but with aq or shissar they will believe it or not. I have seen it and i had a lvl 60 monk agree with me. I never played a ranger so i dont exactly know how good this weapon is but if you're high enough to kill Yel, than i am sure you guys wouldnt mind having this for exp groups or just to play around with. This would prolly be nice on CT raids since you shouldnt take any dmg anyway. Some of you keep saying, oh, i gotta go get me one of these, LOL, you guys have no idea what type of dragon youre up against

PEACE~~~!!!
You've got to be kidding

Any ranger that would not fight to the death to get this is an idiot. A ranger's role in a group is twofold, deliver maximum damage possible WITHOUT getting the aggro from the mob, and even more important peeling the mob off casters. Ok this is not the best peel weapon with the jolt proc but if you carry only 2 weapons - equiped - with you I don't think I want you in my group. Ever heard of changing weapons to suit the situation? If the mob gets on a caster or the main tank dies then change weapons untill the aggro is firmly back where it belongs. I have found that flame lick and snare taunt mobs just as fast as damage anyways.
This is a perfect complement to swiftwind or a lam, decent damage without being too much of a taunt, and 14 str? I don't plan on getting Earthcaller ( too much of a taunt). What do you people want anyways? 20dmg 10dly with godly stats? Once you get to a point where you can actually get this item you will have gained enough knowledge about your class that you will realize how awesome a weapon this is.
RE: You've got to be kidding

Rangers role is a bit more than that, you just defined a rogue, not a ranger
Why would warriors want this?
# May 15 2001 at 9:46 PM Rating: Default
To the post somewhere in the middle.. why would any warrior want this weapon? It procs jolt which would pretty much just negate the effect of warrior taunting/tanking.

Well since it is a Ranger only item, I guess warriors won't have to worry about it. But yeah, warriors wouldn't want this for that reason.

Mute point who can kill him?
# May 03 2001 at 11:35 PM Rating: Default
My guess is it takes ALOT of people to kill the dragon anyway. I read someone did it with 8 grps by rezzing everyone over and over. So even IF he is killed and drops it you are probably rolling against other rangers. So dont argue- you wont get it.
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 28 2001 at 5:02 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Just so you ppl know, not everyone has the support of a guild to get their epics. You make it sound like every ranger over 50 should have their epics already. the epic is not that easy to get. Oh, and this is a public forum, so you ppl need to learn to let others voice their opinions without the childish, I'm beeter than you attitude
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 24 2001 at 9:14 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) For anyone who thinks this is a good ranger weapon, you haven't a clue how to be a ranger to the best of your ability. A ranger's job their aggro just below main tanks, and just above casters. Another job of the ranger is to keep mobs off casters at the start of a fight. Basically, any ranger experienced enough to get this weapon will realize this weapon is terrible.
If it had a decent ratio...

RE: Terrible weapon
# Apr 24 2001 at 9:29 PM Rating: Good
Ok, your logic is evading me. You say a ranger's job is to taunt the mob off a caster when needs be, keep its attention on you if needs be, but not pull it off the main tank. ...That would be what this weapon does. With the 10/19 ratio, better than a lamentation or lupine, you could probably pull most anything off someone if you knew what you were doing. And, with the Jolt effect, it would take the mob's attention off of you just as quickly. Not to mention the fact i wouldn't turn down 14 str any day. If you don't have your epics yet, this is a good idea. When you run your logic all the way through to the end and figure out why this weapon is "terrible", lemme know.
RE: Terrible weapon
# Apr 25 2001 at 1:26 PM Rating: Default
The problem is the proc is random, what if the main tank in the group is dead and a ranger is all thats between the casters and certain doom? Well if Jolt procs, you just got your entire group killed off. If you think its a rangers job to hide behind everyone else, go play a rogue. Jolt has its uses, but knowing when not to Jolt and when to Jolt is very important, having a random proc would be very distressing to the casters.
RE: Terrible weapon
# May 22 2001 at 1:21 PM Rating: Default
ok guy -- first off -- i seriously think you would have yer hands full with a same level rogue (almost certain you would die) AND jolt wipes aggro so just dont use with a nuker or have nuker watch his spell timing -- if weap procs then step to interrupt himself -- i do it all the time -- long as he doesnt nuke right after jolt he should be fine. it's obvious that you shouldnt use this onlarge scale raids unless u have some sort of cadence for your nukers to let tanks rebuild aggro before they set fire to the mo fo. in the former scenario this whip could be a quite valuable tool, but the ranger's attacks would have to be in cadance also. there is also the matter of resist. if u are going against a mob that WONT be jolted then take advantage (duh)
#Anonymous, Posted: May 13 2001 at 10:03 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) don't tell rangers to play rogues.. .. it would give rogues everywhere a bad name

1019 14 str weapon is terrible..... Let me think.... i don't think that is so bad. Okay i admit I am not some uber ranger. But i have been playing my ranger for a good while now. Let me tell you something I can pull a mob off a caster in a sec. I get my *** kicked all the time. I went on a kael raid, didn't taunt, just pure melee, while we had several pally, shadowknights, and warriors taunting away, i got my taken by giants. Right about then I could use that jolt proc. So during raids it is okay weapon to have.

All porpuse weapon it is great to have. I mean all my caster friends i had that weapon just becuase I would dish out more damage and kill the mob faster. So I proc jolt about 3 times a fight, after the proc just taunt a few times. If the warrior(ac tank) dies during a fight, do you think a ranger could hold off a mob that just taken the warrior(ac tank)? NO!! By then the Druid or wizard evaced the hell out of there. If no driuds are wizards the caster cast gate(this might not be true, for i have never seen it happen as my ranger, but i have seen my friend ,who is a mage, have to do so).

So say what you feel is right. In my book this is a good weapon. but hey if you feel as a ranger you can tank a mob that just downed a warrior go for it!!

The "Terrible Weapon" post doesn't make much sense, but this one is much worse. A warrior doesn't WANT to lower his aggro! He wants to keep the MoBs attention as much as he can!

Not always. The things you have to go through to get your epic require raids on places that can be quite uninteresting to a guild as a whole. Add to that the fact that the items you need to drop for your epic arn't guaranteed to drop everytime you raid an area. Add to THAT if you are in a large guild you are most likely competing with other rangers for the drops from those places if/when they do occur. Add to THAT you are raiding for OTHER peoples epics in your guild some WAY more important than yours (cleric click-stick rez). Example: Week in PoH, one stone drops total for Earthcaller, I didn't get it, neither did the other 5 or so rangers that wanted it, our highest level ranger that still needed it did. Our odds of going beck to PoH in the near future is slim, as we are doing ToV at the moment, also Kael for those that need faction still. Also doing others epics. My odds of getting that stone from hate would be 20 percent (chance of winning a roll against 4 other people) IF no more rangers attend then last time, IF we get one to drop, IF I can be there when it happens, IF we end up going back there in the near future. Lots of IFs.

The result of the class tuning lowered the spell to 51 and created a new spell, Cinder Jolt at 55.
