So, this sounds like a rare item that has seldom been earned in the game as... it isn't that good stats-wise, even in era and it comes from a low spawn % quest.

Are people having luck getting it on progression servers? We have verification that the quest still works circa 2016.

This item hasn't been updated by the item collector since 2008 (but if it hasn't changed since then...).

We could use a modern item window pic of this item.

We could use a shot of what it looks like, being wielded (likely by a patient person that did this quest as a trophy).

I've found that one half of the staff is a much more common drop than the other, that is probably why so few of these are created.

I've managed to get two of these so far. The gnoll hunter's are pretty rare, I've killed 2 east of the lake, between the lake and the trail south of Surefall, and all of the others I've killed north or east of the guard tower that leads to West Karana. At least 2 of the kills happened during daylight, but I'm not sure at what time, all other kills were at night. The first 5 hunters I killed all had parts of the crook. Now I am finding only coin, and the usual gnoll parts. I must have been lucky before. A small group of low level players could easily hunt these guys down and get a nice little weapon with stats. I have it just because........ it's fun, it's ranger related and I'm a ranger.
Here's my log of the quest, copied from 2 different logs, that's why the dates don't match.

[Sat Nov 29 14:33:51 2003] You say, 'Hail, Corun Finisc'
[Sat Nov 29 14:33:52 2003] Corun Finisc says 'Hello. My name is Corun Finisc and I am one of the Jaggedpine Treefolk. It is our divine responsibility to watch over and protect Surefall Glade and its [inhabitants] from those who seek to [destroy] them.'

[Sat Nov 29 14:34:23 2003] You say, 'what inhabitants?'
[Sat Nov 29 14:34:23 2003] Corun Finisc says 'The bears of Surefall Glade are our brothers. We are
all children of [Tunare]. We would gladly die in their defense.'
[Sat Nov 29 14:34:47 2003] You say, 'who wants to destroy them?'
[Sat Nov 29 14:34:56 2003] You say, 'destroy?'

I gave up on the [destroy] keyword, this is the 4th time I've tried to gret him to speak more of this, but no luck. Maybe I should try "Who seeks to destroy them?" next time.

[Sat Nov 29 14:35:06 2003] You say, 'who is tunare?'
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:06 2003] Corun Finisc says 'Tunare is the Mother of All. It is through Her will that we protect this land and its many creatures.'

Since I exhausted all of the keywords, I handed him the two halves of the staff.

[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Corun Finisc says 'Look what you have found! It is tragic to know that for

every broken crook that is recovered, one of the Treefolk has lost his life. Those gnolls will pay

some day. If you have the other half of the crook I will repair it for you.'
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Corun Finisc says 'Excellent! Here is a Jaggedpine Crook of your own.

Please use it only to defend yourself and never to attack one of Tunare's creatures. You will find that while wielding the crook, Tunare grants you a boon of strength and the power to smite enemies who would otherwise be impervious to physical attacks.'
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Your faction standing with Jaggedpine Treefolk got better.
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Your faction standing with Protectors of Pine got better.
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Your faction standing with QRG Protected Animals got better.
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Your faction standing with Unkempt Druids got worse.
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos could not possibly get any
better.
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:41 2003] You gain experience!!
[Sat Nov 29 14:35:46 2003] Donbayne saved.

I hope this helped someone.

As of February 2003 this quest and its two components still exist and drop off of Gnoll Hunters, which still spawn only at night.
I have just completed in after two years of trying :)

Hehe, who said he did it for Uberness of the weapon?

If he's like alot of other Rangers, he did it for bragging rights - look at his level :p

It really does help to read before you flame :\

There's not much in the way of bragging rights for a level 70+ obtaining a weapon that can be gotten under level 10.

[Hehe... a post almost six months later.. with only one in between the last one]

I don't know if this is true or not; so it wouldn't hurt to go and try this. I have also heard that the Hunters are on the same spawn table as "Gnoll Scouts" - which could mean... go out and kill the wandering gnoll scouts (or anything else out there for that matter) and see if the spawn rate of gnoll hunters picks up.

Any ideas if they only spawn at night, or any other time specific information?

Why do this?
# Oct 15 2001 at 12:15 AM Rating: Decent
Well, I dunno about you, but my ranger on the new FV server is questing after one of these. It may weigh a lot, take forever to get, but it is HARD to do, and when I get it, I will be absurdly proud of it. ^_^ It's a status symbol... an accomplishment. Not everything is about the stats, though.. I am pleased to say... I kinda like the minor stats on this one :) Tis better than nothing.

Plus, every newbie has a cracked staff... =)

I did this to prove my true loathing of gnolls, and finally completed this today. It feels great to own a rare weapon of no real nessesity. It is a challenge to do this quest and it takes patience. Good luck to all who attempt it.

I agree totally. I'm a lvl 27 ranger... and I still look through Qeynos Hills to see if there are any hunters about so I can attempt to get this staff. I'll probably end up using it to practice my rather inept 2hb skills, if I get it. Despite the lack of damage, stats, and the slow speed, its a Jaggedpine Staff. C'mon peeps, its sentimental value for when you were just a wee little ranger...

I've killed 4 Gnoll Hunters while camping Pyzjin, and the first one had a bottom half of the staff while the rest had nothing. So you will probably have to kill many of them to finish the quest.

Through my early levels of 4-9 I hunted in Qeynos hills and the levels went fast. I found the bottom part of the staff three times and the gnoll hunter that dropped it was in the hills on the Opposite side of the path as the cottage. The gnoll hunter that dropped the top half was near BB entrance and in the hills area between the BB entrance and the guard tower. Good luck on getting the gnolls.

I have the top of staff from my early days in EQ but have not gotten the Gnoll Hunter to drop the bottom. The gnoll hunter does spawn by the 3 scouts in front of BB. He then walks south to the next hill and stops and disappears. He spawns once every 4 rw hours. Yes the gnoll drops both halfs of the JAGGED pine staff but not at the same time. I should take a screen shot of the top half. Its in one of my banks somewhere....
