Buttler Syncall's Fang
# Aug 25 2007 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent
Hope this helps.

Butler Fang spawns at approximately: -323.04, 127.53
He is in the same wing as the Gypsy Pit amd Negotiater Room on map. Down the hallway from the "Kitchen"
(If you go the Gypsy pit, leave through the south door-Turn East-Go to the end of the hall-Turn South and go to the end of the hall-Turn West and that's where he spawns
Not so rare it seems

In a allied raid last night (12/2/01) we killed the maid 3 or 4 times and the butler once in a period of about 3 hours. They probably spawned more, but we were pulling from all over the place, mostly Gargs.

We ended up with 2 maid fangs and one butler fang.

Either we got really lucky or they upped the drop rate.

We didn't get the nightshade wreath a single time. We did get 2 cauldrons and 11 or 12 MM granites.

As to raiding the zone:

We had about 12 people, mostly 30-40 with one 50 druid. Only suffered a couple of (stupid) deaths; our 2 groups were able to own stuff in the castle pretty well. I believe the group make up was something like 40 war, 40 war, 33 war, 34 pally, 32 pally, 30 druid, 40s druid, 50 druid, 40s wiz, 33 wiz, 39 cleric, 30 druid.

Wurmy stinks! pallys and SK's get some of the best 1 handers in the game. I see a lot of pallys with sword of the morning's and SK's with noct blade. Theyre good 1hs. Also as 2hs i think argent defender or runed frost blade is good. Those are found cheaply now. Argyent (200pp) or the Runes (750) well at least those are antonius bayle prices. Til u can afford a di'zpl imperial katana. Absolute pimp 2 hander. My ranger is gettin one soon once he sells his bow.

This is MY opinion but......

shouldn't you have a better weapon than a ghoulbane at 53? Most pallys get up 2hs, since 1hs stinks!(ubless you have a dual-weilding tank)
and Secondly, what appeals to you about this weapon? it it the lousiest piece of crap I have ever seen. I cant believe ANYONE will ever attempt this quest since the weapon is crappy and the quest is too hard.Jeezus.

I would say keep the ghoulbane for undead, and get a BABS for everything else, and find some decently fast 1 hander with an evil proc like the one linked below for when you need taunt.

I would go for ghoulbane, a good dmg 1hs,or a 2hs. since you are using the ghoulbane, you have to be a pally, and in that case you will never get dual wield. You have to be able to deal out some damage to be a good tank. Just my opinion.

This was THE Ranger weapon back in the day. Still is, in my opinion. It's funny how all the Kunark/Velious babies think this sucks, because of UberWeaponX. Fangs used to sell for 2k each on the most populated and flooded servers. And the EBW looks cooler than any of this new crap..

Methinks the expansions ruined the challenge/strategy in EQ..

HI ALL,
Kinda off subject but I see laot about whats best to use. I personally use 2 ssoy's. I am a lvl 40 Ranger and have a crappy str and dex. I think i got 88 dex and 99 str unbuffed. However with duel weilding these bad boys I sometimes find myself having to back of a sec. in a fight so as not to over attack. I know we Rangers are not the tanks warriors are and don't wanna get ******* at for being a mana sponge. These are great however if you are going to solo. I have my call of sky wich stacks with the yaks proc and even at 88 dex get around 300-500 damage in procs per fight on average. So if ur a Ranger ***** the 3k pp wurmie and just grab to of these bad boys till you get your epics. Any opinions that differ from mine are welcomed ,but please don't flame me lol.

Why would anyone want to duel wield a wurm? they are SO slow and very rarely hit for max damage. My str as of now is 195 and i might see it hit over 100 twice a fight. Just kinda curious, that's all. I would LOVE to get this weapon mainly for the looks though, but if ya want a katana looking sword or anything oriental looking, go to the Warrens, the kobolds there drop many oriental weapons. Ahhh, I dunno, as a paladin with a STR of 115 (120 at the time) I hit for 100 plenty of times, and that was at lvl 43, but different strokes for different folks I guess. for a 1hs, WS is awesome.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 10 2001 at 5:40 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This is just a question but how the hell can you put a wurmslayer in your off hand? When you can figure that out pigs will start to fly.....the slayer is primary hand only.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 08 2001 at 11:55 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Why do you people post of what you know nothing of, this is an awesome tanking weapon. Tanking does NOT mean dealing damage, it means keeping the mob on YOU and NO ONE ELSE. And to the ranger who dueled this with a Wurmy, your a putz, everyone knows you go for dmg in offhand. IMHO this beats the crap out of an SSOY. SSOY is way to slow to tank, And BTW having 200 dex as opposed to 100 will only up your chances by about 3 percent. Learn something about the game, then post =)
RE: Just clearing some things up
# Jan 25 2003 at 3:06 AM Rating: Default
clearing up a few things here, the posters below seem a tad confused.

for dual wielders: you get a primary hand damage bonus. for any 1h weapon, it makes speed an important factor. let's say you have 2 1h weapons, a 10/20 and a 20/40. if X represents your damage bonus, they become 10+x/20 and 20+x/40 respectively. for any number X where X > 0, (10+x)/20 > (20+x)/40. for those of you not math inclined, it makes the faster weapon better in your primary, because the the damage bonus is not affected by weapon delay. this is not the case for 2h weapons with a delay greater than 28. in your offhand(which has no damage bonus), a 10/20, 15/30, or 20/40 weapon would all do exactly the same dps. stats would then be the deciding factor.

for tanking classes (warriors in particular): for strictly aggro, SSoY > EBW. melee aggro is based on # of attacks and damage done. more of either means more aggro. for example: in primary hand, wurmslayer (25/40?) and lamentation (9/19) do almost the exact same damage between level 30 and 52 (lammy improves more as you increase level and primary hand dmg bonus). however, lammy will yield much superior aggro, because rate of attack is higher. and Wakizashi of Frozen Skies (6/22) will not have as much melee aggro as Glowing Black Sword (9/22).
but warriors depend on weapons with procs to hold aggro, because proc aggro is immense. a WoFS (80 dmg proc) will consistently out-aggro the GBS.
and a SSoY, though a pinch slower, will do the same to an EBW. because of the proc.

for the guy with the question about strength:
it's a little hard to explain. putting it simply, your STR affects your max hit. the higher you str, the higher your max hit is able to go. my max hit with a weighty polearm (29/34) and a str of 106 at level 52 with max 2hs skill is 130. with my 15str buff, it's 133. but as you might notice, you hardly ever hit for max damage.
so, since your min hit remains the same, a much higher str will stretch out your damage table.
here's where it gets tough to explain. i'll try to give a simplified model of what EQ uses.
let's say that your max hit with your weapon is 100. and that you only ever hit in 5% increments of your max hit (5, 10, 15, etc... but never anything in between). based on calculations only the designers know, you will hit a mob for each of those numbers a certain % of the time. for example, maybe you'll only hit for 100 on 2% of your swings that make contact. and maybe you'll hit for 70 surprisingly often - 12% of the time (if it was purely random, you'd hit each number 5% of the time). whatever your % of hits for each hit #, that's your hit distribution. now let's say we increase your str by 100, and your max hit becomes 120. things get weird after that. the % increase in max hit does not parallel the % increase in dps. 100str is roughly a 5-7% dps improvement. now let's give you a raw 30 ATK buff. that doesn't increase your max hit at all, but if shifts your hit distribution upwards - you'll be hitting for higher dmg more often. 30atk is roughly a 3% increase in dps.
now it gets weirder. your weapon skill along with the ac and relative level of the mob you are attacking will affect hit distribution, and skill will also affect max damage. i don't know exactly how. and i don't know whether the delay on slower weapons or the 2hander rebalancing makes STR more effective, but it does seem like str hardly improves dualwielding dps, yet has a noticable effect on 2h weapons (and ATK is just as effective on either).

for better info, post questions at The Steel Warrior - warriors are too mathy for their own good. god knows they have nothing better to do with their time =P. Hit attack, pull out a notepad and find formulas based off of log parses - a warrior's life.

I have to disagree with your theories on tanking. Warriors especially but also shadow knights and paladins (plate mail tanks) first duty is to keep the mob on them and off the others. The best way to do that is deal alot of damage and hit the taunt button. A slow weapon might slow you down getting a mob off your caster, but doing alot of damage will keep it from agroing your caster to begin with. Additionally, for anyone except a straight warrior, a well placed spell will get that mob right back on you.

Absorbing damage is not a one the ranger's main duties. Letting a mob pound on a ranger for extended periods will burn thru your cleric's mana in a big hurry. A ranger's main duty is damage dealing! Doing that efficiently will get the mob's attention plenty, probably more than you'd really like.

This is a good weapon at lower level, and looks cool, but to consider using it instead of SSOY is not a good idea. Its dam/del is not very good at all, and its got no stats or proc.

As for your theory of going for damage in your offhand. I don't think the majority of tanks would agree with that, for a little more speed in offhand than in the primary. However, if that were the case then the yak is a clear winner over this weapon.

As for your ranting about others not speaking up without some knowledge, I don't like such statements, especially since it appears you should apply that to yourself.

ok, i'll say right off i am NOT a tank. i am a rogue. so obviously i always want a peircing weapon in my primary. i currently use a Slime Coated Harpoon, 10 25 and some stats. for my off, i alternate a Blackjack (7/21), Burning Rapier (7/20), and Crystal Fiber (8/26). i find that i use the BR or Blackjack more often than the CF because the CF is too SLOW. decent damage yes, but the Blackjack or BR BOTH out damage in terms because they hit more often.

my way of saying you should have a FAST weapon in your offhand. and yes i sometimes have agro problems but that is what Evade is for :P

As a ranger I'll add my $0.02 here.

Offhand is where you put your heavy hitter, your main weapon has to be FAST. This is 42 levels worth of experience folks.

Rangers can get a mobs attention anytime they want with a crappy little 20hp/4ac dot/debuff. Even so - 7/21 ain't that great.

Gimme my dragon horn yak (8/23 + Yak-proc) anyday - having ********** up my stats at character creation I still get this to proc at least 4-5 times anytime I'm facing a mob with 2500hp or more. I've just traded up from Ice-tooth claw (11/29 - better ratio but no proc and it's SLOOOOOOOOOOW) and finding I have much better damage output. I'm offhanding a Crystallized Sword (11/29) until I get my Wurmy.

I hate to destroy long established theories but offhand isn't for your "heavy hitter" its for your second best weapon. The dominate theory is that offhand delay dose not matter, this couldn't be farther from the truth. Offhand delay is totally independent of primary hand delay. Example: assume you could dual wield constantly with a pair of 40 delay swords therefore each hand attacks once every 4 secs (I'm ignoreing double attack). Now switch the primary sword with a 20 delay sword and you will notice that the primary attacks every 2 seconds while the offhand still attacks every 4 seconds (I know this through 10 lvls of dual-weilding a wurm(delay 40) with an IBC(delay 18). Now you say "well what about the str bonus it's primary only". My IBC maxs at 15 (7*2+1) in my offhand, in my primary hand it maxes at 23 (7*2+9) in my primary hand. My wurm would max at 51 (25*2+1) in my offhand(if it could be used there) and in my primary it maxes for 71 (25*2+21) the bonus is about doubled like the delay because strength bonuses are larger on higher delay weapons (thats why a Weighted Axe DMG:45 Delay:150 hits for 150-200 damage).

I'm sure my insights will infuriate my higher level comrades who have not yet figured this out and I look forward to all your flames.:)

I just had to throw my two cp's into this.

I am currently using a Wurmie/Giant Militia Longsword-Dragon Horn Yak (depends on the party makeup and needs or if I am soloing). Prevailing Theories aside, the Primary Weapon delay is the controlling factor in when your offhand weapon swings. If it is as fast or faster than your Prim, it checks for swing when your Prim does. If it is slower, then it checks for the swing the first time the Prim does after the delay is up.

As for What types of weapons to use when you dual weild, Big Weapon goes in the Primary Slot. You do more damage with your prim hand since it figures the damage bonus differently. So you want your Prim hand to hit just as hard as you can, since your secondary hand will NEVER do as much damage as your Prim (My DHY does no more than 28 or so in offhand, while primary will go as high as 37 or so).

Since my GML has a delay of 39(?) and my Wurmie has a Delay of 40, it always checks for swing when my Prim hand goes. Damage of 11 on it doesn't hurt either ;) Just gotta watch out for the Exhaustion factor when you swing two big ole heavy bats like this.

You are absolutely correct. What's funny is, monks have figured this out a loooooong time ago. It's like one of their holy principles. Big hitter in primary and fast attack in secondary.

Let me see if I can do the formula somewhat:

1. you have your primary hand that is completely as it seems with the correct delay and damage.
2. your primary gets the damage calculation as noted above, or more like (dmg * 2) + rnd(level) + str(bonus)(more than likely random too).
3. you get a CHANCE to swing with your secondary hand kind of like: 500 / skill * dly (which should render a percentage) ( I already know in advance this is a bit off but you get the idea that the secondary swing is percentage based)
4. double attack is also a random percentage base occurence, and I'm pretty sure it is in fact based on the success of the first attack.
5. your second hand is also time based sort of like recast times on spells. i.e. you have x amount of time to swing with your secondary hand. The delay of the weapon in hand highly affects this time period.

From this then you would see that having the lowest delay weapon possible in your secondary hand is the way to go, not have the hardest hitting, which usually goes with a horrendous delay. Furthermore the developing meleer will want an extremely low delay so as to get the most chances to proc the secondary percentage to swing so as to make his dual wield skill go up quickly.

Shakaama 53rd lvl know it all
RE: tanking
# Feb 22 2002 at 10:23 PM Rating: Decent
Wrong, ratio is all that matters in the off-hand... low delay is best for primary because monks get dmg bonuses every so many levels which will help more on a low delay than a high delay...

no reason here to flame for you are about right.
just want to add one more thing:
Offhand weapons usualy do not hit for max damage anyway, so wielding a low delay weapon there with decent damage is ok.
I for myself stick with my Swiftblade in Offhand just for the Haste on it, even though the 5/24 on it are rather crap.

Since you guys seems to know how it works, i'd thought i'd post just to see if someone could help me figure out some stuff.
i'm one who loves to calculate stuff for games but hates math, what i'm trying to get at is the formulas for Weapon Damage.

1) How does STR factor in extra damage? I've heard every 10 str or part thereof above 100 will add 1 point of damage.

2) How much does the delay and how does it affect the STR bonus of it? like 40dly added 21 more damage and 18dly added 9 more damage as the previous person who posted said. Just wanna know which weapon should be in off hand.

3) What are the damage caps and how are they affected? By your level? By your class? By your skill?

4) Thanks in advance!!

Heh newbie player here... so please be gentle. ;)
RE: tanking
# Feb 22 2003 at 7:58 AM Rating: Default
This is a very concise writeup of the way max melee damage is figured in EQ:

((Weapon_Damage * (STR + Weapon_Skill / 100)) + damage_bonus) is the amount of damage your primary hand does. - If you don't have a damage bonus, assume that it's 1.

Thus, with a STR of 150, a Weapon_Skill of 150 and a damage_bonus of 11, a melee class would do 41 damage max with a 10 damage weapon in primary hand.

If you don't have enough ATK (which is determined by your STR + weapon_skill) to give you a multiplier, or you're a non-melee class, your max damage is simply (weapon_DMG * 2) + 1.

((Weapon_Damage * 2) + 1) is also your offhand damage potential.

A Bash or Slam is figured as an "offhand weapon" attack with a particular DMG. I don't know how the DMG is figured and it's not explicit on the shield when you inspect, but I suspect it's highly dependant on level the character's level.

Delay only affects 2hs damage for high level players, and it's explicit in the damage bonus display.

Regarding damage caps, and how they're affected by level:

On a character under level 10, all weapons over 10 damage are "capped" down to 10. The most damage you will do with a newbie is 21, following the formulae above.*

At level 10, this cap is raised to 14. The maximum hit from 10 - 20 is then 29. At 20 the caps are lifted completely.

*This means that when twinking a brand-new character, the best you can do is to give him the fastest weapon you can find with a damage of 10.

I hope that's not too much info. Two years later...

it's because your primary and offhand are independent of each other. when you "quad" it's because both of your weapons had a successful roll for double attack in a short span of time.

so a weapon with a 17 delay and one with a 23 delay would hardly ever swing together (every 391 rounds of attack on primary, assuming the offhand was swung on that attack round). but a weapon with a 15 dly and a 30 dly would swing together every other time the 15 delay weapon was swung.

clear enough? so for two EBWs, every 2.1 seconds (assuming no haste) you would swing primary with a chance of dbl atk. at the same time, your dual wield skill is rolled to see if you swing your offhand - if you do, it rolls to see if you dbl atk with offhand. when all three rolls are successful, you "quad".

but the term quad is misleading for those with unequal primary/secondary weapon delays - it's nice to see all that damage done at once, but it doesn't really affect your overall damage output. for example, wielding a lammy/centi ls combo (common twink gear now), you would hardly ever really quad.

with lammy (9/19) and centi(14/27) and no haste, every 1.9 seconds you would swing with your primary (with a chance of dbl atk), and every 2.7 seconds you would have a chance to swing offhand (with chance for dbl atk).
Nice

They are droppable.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 01 2001 at 11:10 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This weapon isn't all that good. It's rated to get at 35, but you are a joke at 35 with this weapon. Come on what's the deal. I keep getting more and more pissed off that I chose a warrior, we can't get really anything good until we are in the 50's. I am quite dissapointed.

It is a fast weapon, but they should up the damage to at least a 9. The fangs are rare drops and very hard to get, the reward should be higher for this quest.

If you are a ranger, there is a better reqard. Call of Flames is a great spell, one of the ranger's best, so dun say it needs a better reward.
#Anonymous, Posted: Mar 23 2001 at 8:56 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I really hate it when people roam the boards posting "this weapon sux" everywhere, yes it sux to a level 50, but maybe some lower levels would like it, get a life

I don't know what your complaining about. This weapon has been out since EQ was out, and 2 years ago there wasn't much better than this for lvl 35. Yeah there are a lot of better things now with Kunark and Velious. If you don't like the stats of the weapon, don't do the quest.
#Anonymous, Posted: Apr 10 2001 at 12:26 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) this weapon is rather good.. its fast and good damage for a fast weapon... although a proc would make this nice.. not a big proc.. maybe just... ohh i dunno +50 to str or.. a 300 dot.. somethin real groovy like that =) just jokin about the super procs there .. besides most high lvls will just let you loot items off guys and a lot of people could have this by lvl 20.. and at 20.. this is an awesome weapon..(proc would make it complete =)
