I got all 3 in Vxed, as there seemed to be more stonemites available there.
Didn't count kills, but it was less than 50 total I would say.
The respawn time appears to be a tad around 12 minutes on Selos server.

Where do you guys think the best place to find these shells is now? I can't get into the Vex instnace that your talking about because I'm not cleared for the sewers and the pass or something. So I know I did this on my other berserker and SK and others, but I cant remember where I went for the items besides the scales...
My first instance I found two shells and two spectral essences. Since then I've spent about six hours slaying stonemites and haven't found a third shell. It's driving me crazy!

Probably say this is the hardest drop to farm... It's beyond rare. Over 500 kills and finally had my 2nd drop.

I've determined that Vxed is far and away the best place to get both the Polished Stonemite Shells and the Untainted Spectral Essences needed for the Lizardscale Plated Girdle quest.
Running tab:
1st shell: 16 Vxed stonemites killed, 2 trips.
2nd shell: 46 (more) killed, 6 trips.
3rd shell: 25 (more) killed, 3 trips.
Total stonemite kills: 87 :)
*All trips were between 45min-2.5hrs, with an average of 1hr, 20min. per trip.
Notes:
The beginning 3-way has a pretty good pop-rate. About 1 in 3 ratio. Spawn will be either: Hynid, Pooka, or Stonemite. Total of 8 spawns to cycle. 15min repop.
Stonemites can pop in place of:
1. The 2 centermost static mobs
2. 1st 2 static mobs each on North, & East paths (NOT Cragbeast roamer on East)
3. 1st mob on West path (NOT the noc/ukun static-spawn)
4. North path roamer (paths to just below the 1st mob on path)

I worked on getting these in Vxed over the weekend and didn't count the stonemites, but did chart the time.
First trip I soloed for about 2.5 hours and got 1 to drop.
Second trip I had 4 people join me and after 4 hours with none, we got my last 2 in the next hour. We also had 7 BiC pieces drop and the zone-rare mask once.

we got 5 of these in Vxed before the 6 hour time limit on 9/4/2005

"Rare" is right. I have so far gotten 1 of these in 38 "a venomous stonemite" kills - maybe 3x as many mobs total killed to get this far.
Update: finally obtained all 3 required, count of stonemites killed was 55.

This is definately not common. This drop is soo rare yu would need to farm for a month to collect the 3 needed for CBQ belt. SOE really f'd up the CBQ quests.
And SOE phooking something up shocks you?
This item needs its listing changed to rare. I've spent the last 3 weeks 2-6 hours a day in there and so far have only gotten 2. I've seen as many Chanting masks in the same time period.
