I have found that this drops off of various mobs in the armoury in Dulak. Other research related drops I have encountered in the armoury: scent of marr, flame of vox, various words.
Unfortunately I did not pay attention to which mobs specifically dropped each item or to the frequency, but I can say that the drop-rate is about the same as the drop rate of Star Rubies. Usually in two hours of farming I have three of each.

this is also used for tradeskills for celestial essence, a key component to most useful brewing, like qyenos afternoon tea, surefall ranger's trail juice, and some cultural tempers, like making purified water. recipes are on eqtraders

While leveling my human paladin up to 51, I killed Dvin L'Crit at the front gate of the Neriak Foreign Quarter many times. I was off EQ for four months and was very surprised to find him Drop the Essence of Rathe last night --3/29/04. He hadn't ever dropped that when I was hunting him last October. I am going back to hunt him some more and will post whether he drops it again. Perhaps he is a new source.
