Quillmane, update July 9th, 2013 (4)
# Jul 09 2013 at 9:16 PM Rating: Decent
I want to warn you I am not an expert on Quillmane, spawning or tracking. I am going to give my recent experience in hopes that you will find it helpful during your quest. Because this guy is a real pain to spawn. But once you do spawn him, you will be grinding him I swear. Quillmane takes patience and dedication. I compare it to the Plane of Sky part and to the Fire elementals you hunt in the trap. Just a bad spawn and a bad drop rate of the item you need. However once you pinpoint his exact place holder (PH) then you will be getting him to spawn a very quick and at a relatively easy pace.

Like I said earlier, I am no expert but I have found things to be different from the info I have read through, but PLEASE read through the forums and not just this. I got different bits and pieces from each post I read forming a picture on this guy so it may behoove you to do the same. Also check the dates of the posts/threads because a lot of the information was from 2002-2006 or when the fabled came out.

I want to say good luck to those that want to solo without a tracker (Bard, druid and ranger) (side note why cant a beastlord track? Lol). More power to you. However if you want that quick and easy pace then you will need a tracker. I used a level 55 ranger, no AAs, 200/200 tracking skill. Keep your tracker on NORMAL. It will place newest spawned creatures at the top of the list.

Spawning Quillmane:
I really stink at spawning Quillmane, I based it more on luck, but here is how I got him to spawn. Where to start your killing is between the Aviaks, Splitpaw Gnolls, and the hermits house (building southwest with a cottage inside walls). I suggest pulling as much as you can then nuking with aoe and killing everything within a few seconds. I am not using the timer at this point. I found it to be useless until Quillmane spawned, however do not cut it out, because the creatures do have different spawn timers. It seemed regular mobs would spawn within 32 seconds or had a 4-6 min timer. The NAMED PH mobs will have the same timer as Quillmanes PH. So with your timer counting to 78 secs will guarantee all of the mobs spawned (adjust how you see fit) to the PH. Then you could pull just the 78 second ones to kill. Keep killing like this until Quillmane spawns.
NOTE:
-Kill ROAMING Mobs, not stationary (note newly spawned mobs will be stationary for a short time)
-Leave Named Mobs, ALIVE
-Do not kill mobs that you did not intend to kill, let them beat you up or just run away from them til out of agro distance (you will lose agro).
-Quillmane DOES NOT have ONE SPAWN LOCATION. He has quite a few, but his spawns will be below the splitpaw southern line, but across that whole southern zone.

Finding Quillmane:
After finding the elusive beast don’t kill him right away. It took me like 10-12 kills just for one drop so it will benefit you to follow these steps. (just pull him and let him beat you up, or just leave him alone until your ready to kill, he is NOT a hard fight at all, easy peezy)
1. Kill two or three STATIONARY gnolls at splitpaw, and let them respawn 4 to 6 minute timers. This will be your buffer for all creatures between you and Quillmanes PH.
2. When gnolls respawn they should be at the top of your NORMAL track list, now kill quillmane, if cloak drops great! If not continue…
3. His PH spawn will be exactly like his spawn, all over the southern zone you made from splitpaw. So running around is A GOOD IDEA! And forget everything about only lions, wolves, forget all that NONSENSE. Because I found it to be anything that can roam (DON’T KILL NAMED CREATURES!!!). Centaurs, aviaks, Cyclops, undead Cyclops, wolves, lions, or anything else that spawns at the top of your list, don’t let any stone be unturned.
4. The TIMER!!!!! His timer IS NOT 78 seconds (I said that earlier just to be sure of his PH spawns as you pull and kill). I found Quillmanes PH TIMER to be 40-45 seconds (RARELY BUT HAPPENED WITH A LION AND UNDEAD CYCLOPS) and 62-66 seconds. I could not find any other type of timer with him. Just continue killing the PH until Quillmane spawns, however….
5. I warn that killing Quillmane rapidly seemed to cause the zone to SPAWN NEW creatures to push to the top of the tracker to counter this way of playing. If this happens I would go kill Gnolls again to put at top.
6. And I do believe Quillmane could have two possible timers, but works with either (both don’t have to be dead), I do not have the evidence for this just a feeling from how my experience went. I had a 45 second undead Cyclops spawn then a 62 lion spawn, I ended up killing the lion first then the Cyclops (just to be sure), I felt at that point I could handle two spawns. After I killed both however, only one spawned. So it could mean that Quillmane needs both creatures dead.
NOTE:
- 40-45 second timer (rare) and 62-66 (common)
- Killing quillmane rapidly causes more new mobs for tracker, kill some stationary gnolls as a reference on tracker to cut the bull-corn mobs
- Don’t leave any mob alive that spawned on these timers, no matter if they are a Cyclops or centaur or aviak or wolf or etc. ( to be safe, HOWEVER….)
- HOWEVER, DO NOT KILL ANY NAMED. Even if it spawned on timer, you must had the wrong PH. THIS IS HELPFUL just for one reason that you don’t have to deal with his PH again.
- Do not kill unnecessarily and keep tabs on your normal tracker and timer at this point.
- When I killed quillmane like this there were NO OTHER PLAYERS in the zone, so I was just Killing one mob every minute or so and it was still causing multiple new spawns, like the zone refreshed or restarted or something. I believe SoE does not want us to grind in this way…but ***** them, its already hard as it is lol.

Fabled version Quillmane can drop only fabled cloak that not is used for Mage epic which is annoying as it should allways be a regular cloak along with the fabled cloak, much waste of time because of the fabled period :(

dropped only Fabled cloak for me 31/3 - 2013 (still hunting the regular one for quest) can take days/week unless u kill mobs (PH) 24/7, tho i have seen him on track again 5min after the first death "fabled version that is"

The guide works fine. I manged to get it to 2 phs who crossed paths, so i kept both phs dead. Managed to get 5 fabled pops in 5 hours .. not 1 an hour mind you. Got 3 in a row after spending 2 hours isolating the PH. Then got the last one right at 5 hours (when I quit for the night).

Like the guide says, have patience. You can do this even if others are killin in zone, I did using a 53 druid tracker.

Good luck!

edit: only fableds popped, only fabled cloaks dropped, all 5 had the legs.

narrowed to 1 ph
# Apr 05 2007 at 8:44 AM Rating: Decent
all i gotta say is i killed every one of the phs and never got it to just 1 i finnaly got him to spawn by killing everything north to south by paw so maybee it works maybee it doesnt but i think its all luck to anyone who gets him to spawn fast. also as a ranger tracking this zone is super annoying liek western waste u track a mob and it takes u across half the zone i tried to stay in the triangle but went outside it trying to get the 1 ph by killing all other phs anyways total of about 6 hours id just do the north to south deal after i started that he popped in about an hour so waste time trying to get 1 ph if u want i did for 5 hours gl
Quill spawn theory works

Walkthrough from the mage comp someone posted down further worked for me. Had a ranger track, Killed all the Lions, lioness, etc, got down to just lioness... took about an hour. Quill spawned for me. Got the cloak. Nuff said, it works, dont doubt it ~
Its funny

I think its funny how everyone rants about how tough and rare this guy is (let alone the fabled) yet i walk into SK today and there he is roaming the zone, with 5 other people in the zone (? confusing) dropped both the fabled and non fabled.

Worked wonderfully. Spent 3 hrs killing everything between splitpaw and aviaks and got nowhere. Spent 30 minutes running around in the triangle between Aviaks, Hermit and Splitpaw killing the 5 mobs. Bingo Fabled!
Want Rares?
# Apr 28 2005 at 8:39 AM Rating: Good
Ok, I tried the Lion(s), egrets, mist wolf, elephant thing..while that was everso much fun... the way I got all ( ALL ) my alts cloaks is by just sitting directly to the south of Splitpaw and killing ever mob that crossed over paw North to south

Popped all the " Rares " in zone 2 fabled quills, 3 regular quills, 1 Fabled Grizzleknot, 1 regular Grizzleknot, I fabled Meadowgreen ( undead gnoll? ) 2 Styfyre, 2 named cyclops and the guy that drops the lionhide backpack.

Now before you flame...I wasnt just Playing EQ I was turning in the 100 or so pepsi caps for free itunes ( guys at work were saving em for me, otherwise all the caffine would prevent me from typing ) it took about 12-14 hours. Ive read the timer thing with the use of some map thing, but I didnt really wanna go that route, and my druids track is not as good as any ranger for the filtering. But if you have a good book, bottle caps :) or something else to do..this worked and worked well for me.

Safe hunts and rare drops!

I just recently acquired both Fabled and non Fabled cloaks from same drop and this is WHERE: -6562.00, 769.39, 0.31 is the LOC.

Kill everything within visual range of the Aviak Village on the North West Side.

Escaped Gnolls and other such spawn Lion Lioness elephant Treant < a must kill PH> If you camp this area and kill everything that walks near you Pegasus will spawn I SWEAR IT! I have both cloaks as proof and I gave you the LOC that not a Damn one you previous posters bothered to Give. Yes you can all thank me now the mystery is no more.

For those of you that don't know what a LOC is just look for the Erudite in blue by the Aviak Village and stand next to him and kill anything near that village spawning there or near it.

I have Dogged through these lame posts and spent a few weeks on this issue so the rest of my EQ bretheren can breathe a little easier and TAG the STUPID FLYING DONKEY!!!

If you are on the Nameless server please send me a tell when you get one or if you require my assistance for the Hunt <***** Rangers-Theyre lost anyways> I soloed that dang thing at 55 as a SHAMAN and I must say he went down almost too easily and was Dark blue to me.

OK guys and gals have fun with your new Flight skills I have an Epic to get 3 more kills for. Good Luck!!!
Peg cloak and liars
# Mar 26 2005 at 10:43 AM Rating: Decent
Some real time LIARS here on this post, just got cloak after wasting 10 hours, 4 on day one and 6 on day 2 on how to get Peg to spawn, Went to Mage comp read how to make spawn worked in 20 min.. http://forum.magecompendium.com/viewtopic.php?t=17125&highlight=quillmane ...here is what it says and worked great X 3 ...Yes, you heard correctly - Quillmane has a SET PH. Quillmane is NOT a random spawn. This I can PROVE. And here is the strategy.

The mobs I have ever seen Quillmane's ph spawn as are: a lion, a lioness, an elephant, a mist wolf, an escaped splitpaw gnoll, and an aviak egret. What this means, is that if you kill ALL of these mobs in SK (ONLY those on that list), EVENTUALLY there will only be a SINGLE spawn that keeps popping up as one of these mobs. All of the other mobs will randomly spawn as another mob (cent, shadow wolf, whatever). Once you have narrowed it down to this single mob, you keep killing it as it spawns. In order to do this, you NEED a tracker (ranger preffered for a larger range). Have the tracker set track to normal, and watch the top of track for the newest spawn - if your only killing 1 mob, then it will be one of the above on the list (assuming you have narrowed it down to 1 PH). The spawn time is around ~80 seconds...never bothered to time it to a tee. Killing Gnolls is a true waste of time
RE: Peg cloak and liars
# May 02 2006 at 8:57 AM Rating: Decent
I did exactly what was stated, only difference is the 'an aviak egret' was 'aviak egret' without the 'an' in the name. Otherwise it worked perfectly. I used a 70 ranger with 280 tracking and ran him around to kill the spawns. I did stay mainly in front of Splitpaw, but I had to run all over the place. Within 1.5 hours I had 3 Quills spawn first two dropped the pants, and the third dropped the cloak. Yay no more seeking lev potions or devices for my warrior!!

Once I got the cloak I kept trying to respawn the Quill to see if I could continue, although after two or so more hours I packed it in without another spawn.

During the Fabled events, I tried this method. My tracker was a druid, which might not have helped, but I ran the length of the zone to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

In short, I have fabled Ishva robes for every cloth wearing alt i have, but never saw either fabled or regular Quillmane, over an 8 hour period of killing the specific mobs on the "list".

Perhaps I just got unlucky, and was getting PH spawns over and over, but I have my doubts regarding this method.

Finally, I gave up and went and got a shield of striding.

Worked for me... 2 kills in about 2 hours. Was too much for my 52 Druid... 64 Shammy killed it easy without a pet. 1 Turgur's Insects + 3 Bane of Nife + 1 Breath of Ultor = 1 Fabled Pegasus Feathered Cloak.

Also dropped the normal cloak on first kill (but no mages in zone) and pants on second kill.

0 summons, hardest hit was for I believe 140... but cannot remember. I was disappointed to learn that the effect can only be cast on yourself, though it can be cast from inventory.

Good Luck!

I tried the magecompendium.com method, & also the one on rpgexpert (there is a link to it in the mage thread). Have spawned Fabled Coloth Meadowgreen twice, but no sign of Fabled Quillmane. Back before the splitpaw revamp I got normal quillmane 8 times with the mage method. 4 cloaks, 4 leggings.

Only time I did see it, it was already up. I made the mistake of logging on with my mage & trying to find it - it moved to the north end of the zone & some druid got it. Managed to spawn it again quite quickly, but died on my druid even with help from an uber berserker - corpse was not there when I logged back on. It even spawned a 3rd time, at least according to the druid that ganked me on the first one, & on the third one too, while I was trying to summon a pet.

I'm done camping it I think, apart from quick checks to see if it is up with my druid. I miss the clicky levi since my mage turned in cloak for his epic, but it's just taking far too long.

Needless to say, solo'd at 66 with 54AA.
Cakewalk. Pally can prob solo this in low 60s, np.
Max hit like 157, most was mitigated though.
Didnt summon.
Got another to pop few minutes later by camping all greenie phs runnin north-south within range just south of paw ent.
Had a mage buddy run out incase regular dropped, kept gettin leggings.
Used the S. of paw camp, killin North and South bound greenies (only gnolls kilt were escaped), got Fabled to pop 3x in an hour and a half, each time only legs and fabled cloak.
First pop was just N-NW of Paw, next two were near camp, South of Paw.
Made some lowbie Pally in zone happy.
Still no luck on reg cloak, but least we got the spawn locked!
Also: we were the only ones killing greenies to keep spawns more manageable.

The cloak is a rare drop..ive killed him so many times over the years..not talking about fabled talking about just the regular mob and in 6 years of playing only seen him drop cloak 2 times..which i know he drops it more then that..cause of epic but it is a rare drop on the page they have it as common...unless they mean the fabled but cant imagine it being any different

Got him on 4-7-04 ...65 mage, 58 druid and 32 Pally..was extreme overkill...he went down fast...
Dropped Fabled cloak and leggings..
Petitioned a Gm asking if i could exchange the fabled cloak for a quest one....after three days wait..the reply was no....they are two seperate and distinct items and will NOT be exchnged...so back to hunting for me.....on FV server

Odd that the normal one didn't drop as well.
Seems most fabled, including this one, drop the normal loot at the same time all the time.

The leggings are the normal loot (along with the quest cloak, except the leggings are a much more common drop)

Well, there were peopel who got both cloaks, so basically, the fabled dropped the fabled cloak, + whatever the regular would have dropped, so fabled cloak plus pants were the more common drops, although 2 cloaks did sometimes drop, 1 fabled, one regular.
quillimane owned by 56 druid

Was XP grinding with 22 SK on the aviaks, someone /ooc quilimane up so I grabbed my 56 druid. Quillimane conned dark blue, didnt summon, doubled and tripled for high 200's and ran at almost SOE speed. I ran ahead of him, using mtns to float/gain distance and tossed winged death on him 5 times (roughly 6k HP). Overall easy kill if you do it right and SK is loving the cloak. GL ... ah also he cant be rooted or slowed/snared.
To get a peggy cloak
# Mar 30 2004 at 3:59 AM Rating: Default
To get the peggy cloak, simply
1> Get Tracker, bard ranger etc
2> head to south west, or south east of map
3> keep killing mob that pops at top of track after each kill
4> between 15 mins, to 2 hours is longest so far

INPACT ON MAGES
# Mar 21 2004 at 1:39 AM Rating: Decent
I think WRONG on inpact on mage epic since cloak is like regular all all Mages never get a chance unless they have some support ie trackers. I have consistanly tried for this cloak for near 1 month and have seen him alot only to run up on him and find he is 1/2 to 3/4 dead from someone "just passing through." So the next time you see him send a shout out and see if any mages are in zone and need the cloak it would help us greatly.
RE: INPACT ON MAGES
# Mar 23 2004 at 2:28 PM Rating: Default
Actually the insertion of the fabled quillmane has INCREASED the chance of mages getting the regular cloak that they need for epic, as the fabled quill drops the normal cloak every time he doesn't drop the fabled, thus making the rare drop more common.
RE: INPACT ON MAGES
# Apr 12 2004 at 2:32 AM Rating: Excellent
you have no clue what you are talking about.the fabled quillmane does NOT drop the normal cloak every time, and DOES drop the fabled cloak. you are just lucky if you are a mage and get him to drop the normal cloak. i can guarantee he doesnt drop the normal cloak every time, b/c i killed his sorry bum and he didnt drop the correct cloak for my mage epic

This item drops off the Fabled Quillmane in SK. I was running through SK from Lake Rathe, on the way to Splitpaw while questing the firecracker stick and this guy just popped in front of me.

He is green to a 65 and cannot be rooted. Stuns landed about 90% of the time. Easy kill. Dropped the Fabled cloak and the regular cloak.

Quillmane can drop all 3 item at same time plus Fabled Pegasus Feather Cloak. So no impact on mage epic.
