There is a lot of old information out there on how to obtain the Copper Medal of War from the scout quests in Grimling Forest. I am going to describe how I got mine as a level 73 with 2000 AA's.
First what didn't work - Don't purchase a Glowing Acrylia Sphere from Shopkeeper Chirrin, It is no longer needed. - Both Scout Husman and Scout Derrin when through the script, said something about a secondary camp and then walked me to a camp North. At this camp he said nothing and just stood there. I cleared the camp 3 times with nothing - Captain Necin refused to talk with me. - I went looking for other camps and found a camp across the bridge due west and cleared this a few times
So, what worked. - I spoke with Veteran Vadrel, he discussed the primary camp and then walked me across the bridge to a camp due west about 1/2 way from the bridge and the camp I found earlier. He gave me a script about clearing the camp. - I cleared the camp and as soon as the last NPC in camp was killed, there was a swarm - Office Tregli showed up either at the start of the swarm or during and he could not be targeted - After I cleared the camp, Tregli attacked me and I had the Copper Medal of War
I can confirm that this does still drop off of "a coin courier" as of 4/17/21 on TLP server Rizlona. Spent all day trying to get it to drop and was about to give up when it dropped.
[Sat Apr 17 22:11:13 2021] --You have looted a Copper Medal of War from a coin courier's corpse.--
Just talked to Scout Danarin, followed him to the grimling camp due north of the fort, said "ready to begin" to Scout Danarin once he was standing at the grimling camp, killed all the targetable mobs, and inside the campfire (under the logs) were tiny "a grimling spiritsoother" npcs, that when killed, each one dropped the Copper Medal of War.
My wife needed this for her Beastlord epic. So, our plan was to kill bandit camps to get coin couriers to spawn (several Beastlords we talked to had success with this method). 12+ hours total yielded nothing (not saying it wont work, just saying it didn't work for us).
So, this is what we did to get it.
SERVER: Phinigel - April 5 2017
CONDITIONS - Someone had just reset the zone (conversation with a general - unsure of the name). This starts the grimling war converting every camp to grimling.
ACTIONS: On a hunch we decided to hail Scout Husman (which we had tried before), This time we pre-cleared the camps (we remembered from the first time we tried this, it seems he prefers certain camps).
Camp #1) When Scout Husman arrives (at the pre-cleared empty camp) we hailed him and followed his prompt [ready to begin]. This spawned the camp fresh with the extra mobs (shaman type that cannot be targeted). Once we killed the others at the camp the un-targetable Shaman became active and attacked. Once they were killed a named spawned that did NOT drop the copper medal. ONLY when Scout Husman starts to walk back hail him again, and say [here to help], then [ready to go] he will then run you to another camp.
Camp #2) When Scout Husman arrives (at the pre-cleared empty camp) we hailed him and followed his prompt [ready to begin]. This time we killed the whole camp and the named spawned that dropped the copper medal.
SUMMARY: Make sure the conditions above are met > Grimling war (all camps grimling) > Pre-clear the camps he runs to (you may have to do this trial and error) > talk to Scout Husman and follow him to the camp > [ready to begin]> kill everything until named spawns and you get the medal.
So went to Grimling Forest and did all the mini quests to each grimling hut and killed everything. Nothing!
Not wanting to go through all that again..... I decided to Hail Scout Derrin and follow him to grimling camp North. When Arcanist Ukigit popped and dropped the Copper Medal of War.
A few years back, I submitted to Alla's an extensive and detailed write-up of all the battles in Grimling forest (including trigger NPCs, camp locations, named spawns, etc.) -- everything up to and including the final battle to spawn Claw of Khati Sha. For whatever reason, Alla's never updated any the quest infoz. Appears that the only namers who will drop the beastlord epic medal are:
P 768.0000, -185.0000, 44.0000, 240, 240, 0, 2, CAMP_1_ScoutHusman_Arcanist P 297.0000, 1154.0000, 12.0000, 240, 240, 0, 2, CAMP_3_VeteranDarznel_OfficerTregli P -939.0000, 134.0000, 11.0000, 240, 240, 0, 2, CAMP_7_CaptNecin_Bloodgaurd P -22.0000, -852.0000, 0.0000, 240, 240, 0, 2, CAMP_9_CaptNecin_NightKnife
label format: camp#_triggerNPC_medalDropper
I scanned through that old write-up and the accompanying logs from 2009 (yep I still have it all) and all four of those did indeed drop the Copper Medal of War.
edit: Looking at the bestiary pages for each of those trigger NPCs, I see that Yther posted (also way back in 2009) logspam for these four events. So, although there are no actual pages for the quests themselves, the specific dialogue is available on each NPC page.
I am aware that presently there are no raids to obtain this item. With that in mind I focused on a grimling camp on the east wall of the zone where it is reported on Magelo that a grimling spiritsoother is found. I disregarded the other Names listed as offering the Copper Medal of War, as I gathered they were part of the discontinued raids. Having disturbed that east wall settlement of four tents on wooden platforms for about ten hours with no luck, I am concluding that a grimling spiritsoother is also part of the non-existing raids.
Bumtic somewhat recently commented that he pursued "a coin courier" to obtain the Copper Medal of War, stating that said NPC is found at "bandit" camps. Magelo shows "a coin courier" killed in the vicinity of the three tent locations at the south of the zone, among other places. These tents are occupied by various ruffian types of grimlings, none of which bears "bandit" as part of its name. Elsewhere I read that a zone turn-around might be needed to obtain the Copper Medal of War. Perhaps such a change would replace the various grimlings with "bandits"? Elsewhere it was stated I might need to wait for a server refreshing to find the situation I need. If that is true, surely there must be some other way to get "bandits" back because something happened to cause them to go away.
New comprehensive instructions are needed to clarify what the present procedures are.
Hailed Scout Derrin (after a patch) and went through his text, he ran off to a grimlin camp, I told him I was ready and then killed the whole camp. Arcanist Ukagit popped, died and dropped the medal.
AND THEN, the repop of the camp was composed of non-grimlings. Their presence was noted by a change in the flag. When grimlings are present the motif of the camp flag is that of a contour mountain; when "humans" are present the motif of the camp flag changes to a lion face. We killed a couple, among which was "a coin courier" who did not drop the Copper Medal of War. Out of consideration of any other beastlords who may follow, we did not hail Scout Derrin a second time to see what would happen.
For those that are looking for current CMoW info the quests are all shut down and the only way to currently get this is via mass killing of bandit camps to get coin couriers to spawn. Once they do you have to get super lucky that they drop the CMoW. I've been mass killing for hours here at 93 and have had many a courier and not a single medal. It is SUPER rare from them. It does look like the couriers can spawn from any spot in the camp as I've seen them come up where thieves, bandits, and shaman spawn so far so I've been killing everything.
hello everyone, just did this quest for the medal of war, and Captain Necin is broken as ive tried it about 6 times, however the npc named Veteran Vadrel is an escort quest for the medal that works. did the escort quest only twice and received the medal after the waves came, after waves come, kill everything then you can attack the named that drops the medal.
hail necin and answer to get first raid going clean camp and run back and hail him again next run is to camp 2 where u clean and get a second wave including Kavgis kill all loot coper medal
I hailed Scout Derin, and follwed his text. When he began to move, I followed him to a Grimling camp. After telling him I was ready, he told me to go down and slaughter them. I killed all that were targetable; afterward, the untargetable mobs became active. One of them was Arcanist Ukigit who dropped the medal.
I probably got lucky, but this seems a lot easier than most of the write-ups suggest.
I got my medal from starting/completing a raid with Veteran Vadrel three times, the first two times he sent me out to camps without an officer, the third time we went to a camp directly West and there was Officer Tregli already in the camp, could attack him after killing most of the mobs.
He (Vadrel) always retreats back to camp as soon as fighting starts so no worries about keeping him alive.
I just did the quest given by necin , just do a few till you get the second camp, keep the traitor alive till named spawned and killed named and got copper medalion.
Anyone know how to reset the camps? The zone is locked up and scouts et al won't take me to the camps to do the war. I've heard rumors of being able to reset the zone and would appreciate any help. Thanks!
How do you get the grimlings to spawn again? How do you refresh the camps so you can do the quest version? Bah ... been camping so long on green and light blue mobs I have gained 56 pct in my level of 53. That really isn't a good thing. 8P
I got this off a coin courier - it took me about 4 hours -- I did it at camp 3 - the third camp in from the Hollowshade entrance along the wall. I also made about 400PP from the bandits. It dropped on the 5th courier that spawned. This turned out to be a lot quicker than the camp quest and getting the boss mob to spawn since the boss mob does not always spawn after clearing a grimmling camp.
This quest took me 25 minutes. I ended up with camp 3 - according to EQBeastlord.com that's one of the easier camps. Killed all the reinforcements until the boss mob spawned. Everything there was a green con except for him. Lt blue but a lot of HP. He dropped the medal for me and a HP/Mana item I can use for an alt.
Captain Necin says 'Strength to you, Seidenglanz. Have you come to [aid us] in our fight against the vile Grimlings of this forest as they try to push forth and destroy us? You certainly look capable enough to do just that and I would hope that you are not just here to gawk while we fight a worthwhile fight for our very heritage.
You say: I am here to aid you
Captain Necin says 'Very good. It is good to know there is still honor among soldiers, even in these trying times. For now, we will be concentrating on the three camps nearest to the mines, between the mines and the town to the North. You will need to gather together three able bodied groups to venture forth for this mission. When you are [ready to go], inform me thusly and I will lead the way.'
You say: I am ready to go
Captain Necin says 'Alright, let's be on our way. Our target for this mission is the first camp we come to as we follow the river North. This is one of two pivotal points before we can cut the Grimlings in the mines off from those in the town. Make sure you have everyone with you, we'll be heading out in just a minute.'
After a minute he runs to the camp. You can follow him even without a SOW.
Captain Necin says 'We have arrived at our destination, and just in time to wreak havoc on the unsuspecting Grimling beasts that are about to meet their creator. You must note that they have a tower where they will be firing down upon you things you may not be expecting. Keep focused and watch out for any other officers that may decide to reinforce the camp mid-fight. When you are [ready to start], let me know and I will let you loose to absolve the Grimlings of their hold on this camp.'
You say: I am ready to start
Captain Necin says 'Take no prisoners! Attack!' or Captain Necin says 'Shed their blood until no Grimlings are left standing! Charge!'
After that he will leave the scene... LOL
You have to wipe out the camp, but every ~3minutes re-enforcements will spawn and after some time or after you have wiped all Grimlings from original camp wiped out (I am still unsure what driggered the main spawn) the *trap* spawns.
There spawned the boss Grimling with 5-6 Grimlings at the same time as the normal camp spawns. At that time we were standing in the middle of the hole camp surrounded with ~16 angry Grimlings and had to run. So I can not say anything about the loot. The boss will be around level 50 and the other Grimlings will be some what between 45 and 48.

Captain Necin says 'This is it, the ninth camp and farthest camp to the North of the forest. Before you begin, you should understand that we are relying on you to rid this camp of its nefarious hosts so that we can move forth to the town. There is a defector among their ranks named Gelg who has information on the town that we must retrieve. Your primary focus is keeping Gelg alive at all costs. If he dies, the mission is a failure and we will have to try some time later. Watch out for any commanders that may join the fight, as they're sure to be looking to slay Gelg for his treachery. When you are [ready to fight], let me know and I will let you loose to save this traitor from the enemy's clutches.'
Your primary objective is to keep the traitor Gelg alive at all costs. Be aware of any officers that come looking to slay Gelg, and eliminate them before they have the chance. Good luck!
Gelg spawns instantly and is attacked by 6-8 Grimlings (level ~45-48).
The Grimlings here are a little harder as from the 8th camp, but you can pull Gelg a little away from the camp when he is attacking some grimlings that you pulled to you. If no Grimling is in a very close range around him he will keep just standing there and the grimlings from the camp won't seek him. So you can pull some Grimlings as you wish without pressure. Around every ~3minutes 3 Grimling re-enforcements will spawn outside of the camp and running to the fire to wait there. The grimling of the camp itself will spawn too, but with the normal low spawning time. After some time Nightknife Gresga (~level 50) will spawn along with the usual other two spawns.
He gave us: "copper medal of war", "charred bone ring" for everyone, "Arm of the Grimling High Commander", "Captured Grimling Documents II" and "Short Sword of the High Grimling"
We were one level 55 BST and one 54 Pala (both very good equipped + kei + temp) and it was hard (lay on hands was needed once).
the best camp by far to get these is from the second war ..if you respond and do everything right then there will be a bazillion little grimlings that spawn in the fire adn each one has a chance of dropping this
