I would have to say very rare is about right. Our guild has been farming PoF for a month now and only 1 of these has dropped. Glad I had the points for it, cause it rocks!

Have 3 in my Guild, I own one as a Shaman and find that I tend to Melee a bit more as the 400DD PROC and average Melee Damage of 150-180 is fairly efficient damage output on non-Fire resistant Mobs. Item has dropped about 25% of the time for my Guild (Approx. 3 of 12 Kills). Very Nice Piece for anyone Specially a Shammy that likes to get in the thick of the action.

umm, if you had your way then there arent enough pre-elemental PoP gods to go around. Are you proposing that there be no loot in pre-ele PoP god raids for most int and wis casters?

Oh wait, you're 59....who cares what your opinion of PoP is. If you cant get in the zone without raiding in then dont speak

Ive had this for a few weeks now and love it! I hit max 230dmg average 100-180 and get as many as 5 procs per fight, with 2hb at 200 skill, and FA. As far as drop rates are concerned we have killed lots of these Pheonix, the 2 that are on the loot table for this Staff maybe 50 - 70 times, and we have 7 in our guild I knew that eventually one of these would be mine ~ just had to wait... slightly less HP and ac than with my shield and orb of thunderous spirits. more than happy with it.

Drops off named in Plane of Fire. Unless you are with a guild who is Elementally (that a word?) flagged, forget about it.
Named are tough too, hit for over 2500

I am afraid you are quite mistaken about the necessity of killing the two birds in order to kill other named in zone. We drop FR just about everytime he spawns and we by-pass birds just about every single time, don't recall even bothering with them in the last month.

I have this staff. I maxed 2HB and offence. The max hit is 210 what ever ATK I had (goes up to 1400 ATK). It proc often and sometimes, proc as hell (up to 4 times in 4 rounds). That gives huge agro. Be ready to tank if you use it in group.

who gets it?
# Jul 26 2003 at 10:39 AM Rating: Decent
This really fits best on a shaman...
Clerics already have high proc 1 handers and druids usually prefer manafree dots items.
Stats wise with this you get the same as epic + a nice shield.

So far 3 staffs dropped since guild enter elemental plane, all 3 are wielded by shm; and honestly, shm do have more use with this staff than clr or dru EVEN you are dealing high green or lightblue mob when solo.

but if you just want stats over effectness, guess it will fit nicely on all 3 class.

Why is this better for shaman? The stats on this are good for any class, and if your shaman has time for melee he isn't busy doing what he's supposed to do.

ok, im a lvl 65 shaman and a damn good one... but i also melee at times.. its very situational.. but in those situations, its good to have a stick like this one to optomize ur melee. we also get rabid bear which is a AA skill based entirely for us to become better melee.. so obviously its been thought that us shamans shuold do some melee at times. now ANY cleric or druid can also.. but do they get skills to make them better melee? so i guess they wernt meant to melee as much as a shaman.. so really. given the variables.. this IS better on a shaman. but im never one to say who shuold get more right to it.. maybe someone will bet more "use" out of it.. but regardless. by the time ur getting this ur looting on a point system.. so anyone with the points gets it end of story. (just wanted to say that yes shamans do melee. yes its expected, and no it doesnt mean we arent doing what we are sposed to) with crit spells AA also this procs 800dd often.. anyone will find time to melee then. like i said situational... when a mob is low enuf health that a nuke would be a waste or not land in time.. go barsh it with this stick and maybe score 800+ damage on it for no mana...

Not quite, Im in a time capable guild, and we still go off of loot council. While they're few and far between, they exist.

While we're on the subject though...people always telling my 'OMG that thing procs like crazy' about my Furious Hammer of Zek. FHoZ has a delay of 18 though, a high proc rate, and can't be resisted, so I'm willing to bet it edges out this guy in proc damage. Plus I can't bash.

I'm HARDLY saying it isn't a nice item. It's better than my FHoZ + HP shield combo for stats. I'm just trying to gauge it's value as a weapon. (Yes, I'm a cleric. I can't speak for druids and shamans.)

the proc on it is the same as the staff of the silent star from ntov its 400dd fire based lure and if ya had scf2 it can critical for 666 dmg and 800 with scf3

#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 30 2002 at 5:42 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Least they put in some stats that would make a 2h item worthwhile. 2h has always been screwed up in that the stats never outweighed 1h stats.
RE: 2h is so farked up.
# Feb 25 2003 at 8:56 AM Rating: Default
You have no idea what you are talking about omg...no epic gives the stats of this weapon...nor anywhere close to what you suggest...epics are outdated...no one is even getting them anymore cause there are so many other weapons better--which is very sad I might add...this weapon would be end all for 2hb for ne1 that can weild it...think before posting next time...
RE: 2h is so farked up.
# Nov 11 2003 at 4:18 AM Rating: Decent
I think what he was saying is the SK epic is a 2 handed weapon(takes up 2 slots) while cleric or shaman epic is 1 handed. The thing is they have exactly the same number or stats, HP/Mana, and resists. Stats on epic add up to a total of 50, mana and HP added together is 100, and resists is also 50 added up. Now the shaman and cleric can have all that in 1 hand and then put another item with nice stats in other hand while the SK is stuck with the weapon taking up 2 hands. Hence 2 handers not even close to as good as 1 handers until this.

i'm not sure that all epics are outdated. the Cleric epic (right click 96% rezz) and the Shaman epic (1500 or so Magic DoT in splurt damage) are still common among those classes for saving mana. The Rogue and Ranger epics are both haste weapons, saving the need to buy a haste item. The wizard epic gives an additional point of mana regen than their best spell with similar effects. The enchanter epic gives a very nice haste spell, saving the need to memorize additional haste to buff pets. While i could go on and on, i agree that epics are no longer the absolute best weapons in the game. In some cases, they're not even close. But they're not outdated. They now fill, to some extent, the same role as the class specific Kunark armors -- utility work. They're used in some situations (clerics rezzing, shamen stacking 3 DoTs (Magic, Poison and Disease) instead of 2 (Poison and Disease) because they do not recieve a magic based DoT. Etc Etc. sorry for the long post, i'm a very disorderly person.

You're missing his point, Oukast. Darkenesis is just saying that before this item, 2-handed weapons/items did not match 1-handed weapons/items statwise (when two are used at the same time). He just happened to use epics as an example.

Basically:
Before - 2 1-handed stats > 2-handed stats
Now - 2 1-handed stats = 2-handed stats (very rough approx.)

I do realize that for the most part, 2 1-handed will still be better than 2-handed. This item just shows that the imbalance is getting smaller.
#Tuluvar, Posted: Mar 14 2003 at 8:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) 2hb is still bad. I wouldnt go 2hb just coz 1 item is better , you prolly spend more time using 1h stuff then getting one of these. This is near end game item. By the time you get this you'll prolly be bored with EQ already.

Clerics have been meleeing a lot lately since the addition of the summoned hammers and much of PoP being outdoors allowing you to comfortably med on your horse while you fight.

Shamans seem to have a policy of poking things twice with their spear before recasting slow if it gets resisted. Not sure how this helps but I see it all the time.

Druids...well, ok, a druid might find something new from a fun weapon.

Resisting fighting isn't hard once you see your group getting decimated because you weren't paying attention. Hopefully you catch it before someone dies. That sits you down on the floor real quick.

Heh lvl 56 Shaman here, even with 2hb only 151 now, I can tank for my pet in Chardok - Recruits, sniffers, underlings and whelps (all dark blue). AC is 823 with all buffs up. HoS, Rage, Agil and Stam buffs all up give me 255 str, 210 dex, 176 sta, 199 agil. 1702 hp, but still have been slack and am using lvl 49 sta buff.

Current weapon to beat on stuff with is a Drakkel Icegrinder, 27/48 (or thereabouts) Max damage I've dealt so far is 96, when I was at 149 2hb skill.

After slowing and crippling mobs, I hit them regularly, and I am nowhere close to maxxing 2hb skill (151 now). I normally proc about 5 or 6 times in a fight against the mobs mentioned above - the fights are long fights because I am saving mana and not using DoTs.

I am strongly considering the purchase of a horse, because when my 2hb skill maxxes out, I will be in good shape to solo reasonably without C3 (no jbb, no epic here) - if I am horse medding.

Having my bind wound skill maxxed at 210 is also very nice for those low mana low hp moments when the pet don't have many hp left and you gotta get a few hp back quick.

Another thing - position is important - the mob will always face the shaman instead of the pet - so be sure to arrange the pet and mob so that the pet is able to attack the mob's rear - no ripostes and parrys...

All together, when I max 2hb skill, I might be able to MELEE solo whelps and underlings without any pet at all - if I can pick up either a weapon with a really nice damage proc, or a weapon with a Very Nice ratio.

Welp, just a bit-o-info about Shaman melee capability - THIS weapon would make melee soloing a good proposition for my shaman - but I'll likely never even see one :P

#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 31 2002 at 12:57 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) i find it easy to resist. when you have more pulls coming than you got time to stand around "whacking things" you will be sitting to keep mana up too. this is better used when solo or in an older world zone pre-velius.
