This is reported to have been awarded to one ranger per server after winning the Best of the Best competition in 1999. It's also been reported that this is false, and that it actually came from the GM event "The Demise of Ghargin Dumblok" which happened following the kidnapping and rescue of Firiona Vie after the launch of Ruins of Kunark. The item lore ("Bow passed down by the Oakwynd family") is in reference to the end of the event in which the troll Ghargin Dumblock was slain by Lyirae Oakwynd with the bow, avenging the death of her twin brother Loriysn. On some servers, the bow was even given to classes other than a ranger. |

I have this bow on firiona vie server, i bought it from Versihle (the winner of the BOTB on our server) 2years ago, i paid 14.6 mil for this bow and i think it was a great deal.
at level 1 the bow hits for mid 30's-40's at lvl 10 60ish with 100+ crits from time to time, but at level 20 i was shooting for 200+ and critting for 430ish.
My chars name is Moogu on FV and i will show anyone who wishes to see it :) and since its on FV server it doesnt have the "no drop" tag. the bow is NOT for sale so please dont ask how much im selling it for etc,etc.
its currently parked on a lvl 30 woodelf ranger .

You can do a search on EQ Rankings for specific items. On this particular day, 05/21/07, no one that uses Magelo currently has an Oakwynd equipped, further leading me to believe that there are not likely any still around. Could be, but seem unlikely.

I've heard that everyone that got this bow all agreed to not use it after a few months because it overpowers their characters so much. So they wouldn't have it equipped and you wouldn't be able to find them even if they did have a magelo
desperately sad!
We know this bow is no longer dropped, etc. However, someone out there has it on an active account. Lucy indicates a Live Verified date of "2007-04-29 17:49:52". I would love to hear about current game performance/experience with this monster of a bow.
I would happily trade all of my range stats for this thing just to silence the "Rangers who use a bow should die" folks. Part of that issue is of course SOE's neutering of Ranger archery power. But I digress. :)

Pre-Nerf Am3 W/Zek Bow + Full VT/Mauradir Mire = 14,000 Crit.
So Pre-Nerf Am3 Oakwynd would do over 50k Crit W/Ts, About 1/2 that Non-Ts.
And if they Had HoA during that era, and you quad critted, thats 200k+.
Your dead of course, but OMM just lost 1/5th of his life lol.
Stonewood with Nerfed-Am3 = 2000'ish Ts, 1,000ish Non-Ts.
So this would prob hit 8,000 Ts, 4,000 Non-Ts.

If by "The Dev favorite class is a Ranger" you mean they are going to be an Imbalanced, over-powered class when it cmes out thats ironic considering current Ranger in EQ1 is now the gimpest class in Everquest.

I think thats the pessemistic way of looking at rangers. Flip that around and ask what other classes can track, DPS, tank, heal, And ranged DPS? Hybrids are the most versatile as a rule of thumb (healing/buffing/fighting), but no other class has as much utility use as a ranger! We offer more possible solutions to a problem than any other class can. Also, we can cover so many bases - healer dies, we can chain heal to survive the mob; tank dies, we can tank that mob allowing the group to recover; no slower, we can earthcall (well... it helps!); add arrives, we can kite or snare & root it. In an emergency, it's a good ranger you want in the group because above any other class we have the potential to fix problems.
I know that this is more than a little late, but I felt like I needed to put my two cents in. Bards are infinitely more versatile than rangers. Don't get me wrong, I love my ranger, and always will, but it still bothers me that bow DPS is only the better option for about three levels nowadays.
I would love to see more bow-related AAs (point blank shot, farshot, precise shot, manyshot, just to name a quick few from D&D, which SoE so clearly rips and renames content), or a consistent damage output like there is with melee weapons instead of the "5, 900, 47, 823, 150, 207, 417, 1028" kind of numbers I see. I would love to see a way (and I'm going to catch a lot of anti-WoW heat for this, but please keep in mind I've never even played that game) to "specialize" a ranger in archery. Hell, even the name is RANGEr.

Funny that nobody's said actually where this bow came from, so I'll clear that up for everyone who's still confused.
This bow was awarded to 1 ranger per server in 1999 for winning the Best of the Best contest held by GMs. Yes, the bow goes byebye when someone ixnays their account (such as it has on the Fennin Ro server), unless they start it up again, as does any other piece of any other player's gear if they cancel their account.
What I don't get is why someone would be stupid enough to let their account just go away if they had this bow. Most likely those accounts would have sold for 1k dollars easily just because of that piece of equipment.

Really now? Try telling it to the person that had it when I inspected him. If you read the tag ARTIFACT, that means only one exists per server ( I think.. Someone correct me if i'm wrong)
From what I've heard, it was given out to one person on each server during a GM event. Yes, artifact means that only one exists per server. Hopefully people will not be squabbling about the artifact items that dropped in SolC and such.

This Bow is way sick i grouped with a guy on the Seventh Hammer sever he had it.... the regular damage on that thing was unbelievable i saw him hit casualy for around 500-600 al though i dont know if thats good nowadays

I dont get it why did they make such a item droppable, and why did they only give it to one player... does that mean only one person had/has it and if the person is gone from EQ forever would the item be lost forever as well?....

Likely a GM weapon, as in possed only by GM's. They have toys like these for fun.

GMs don't have super powerful weapons. They have flavor weapons that have ratios your level 5 alt would laugh at. True GMs, however, can summon any item. Guides do not have this ability.
gm's dont have godly items. they have items that have effects that only they can use. they have effects that are required to fix pc problems. guides dont get ne of it though

Every once in a while someone links this on Bertoxx (usually in pok or baz or some other high population zone). Since there's a link everyone (or atleast near everyone) seems to think that someone on the server has one and has linked it and now people are just linking the links. Not true at all. Just because someone links it DOES not mean they got a link from someone who has it, or that there's even one on the server. I myself am able to link any item, or give the stats to any item in the game in under 1 minute easily. Gimme a tell sometime and i can prove it =P Not many people know how. It's quite a closely guarded secret, so if you DO know how, please keep it quiet, and if you don't know how...sorry =( lol

I saw one linked on the Trbunal servere on 6-1-04 during a Werewolves in WC GM event, but the person who linked it did not ever let anyone inspect it and said they recieved the link from someone else, but no-one could verify if it actually dropped during that event.

There is a ranger wandering around Venril Sathir with one of these PHATTY bows, I myself play a ranger as well & drool over it... it was just linked in the bazaar, LOL someone said, anyone wanna buy a stoneood compound bow?> IMPO the best bow ever!!!!! then next: soandso /ooc's yea, that is one fine bow! but I only have this piece of junk: Oakwynd..... Should be taken out, period. The best artifact in existance is the FT10 staff of alkabor and this bow is about 10 times better than that. A poorly planned move...

First, I don't think the "cap" is 2450... pretty sure you can hit higher with Windstriker, the quested bow from PoA... 45/60.
Second, After a lot of digging around, I found some reference to the GM event where this was used. It apparently was used by a GM controlled character, Lyirae Oakwynd, to avenge her brothers death. As far as I can tell, it was never player useable or obtainable.

Second, After a lot of digging around, I found some reference to the GM event where this was used. It apparently was used by a GM controlled character, Lyirae Oakwynd, to avenge her brothers death. As far as I can tell, it was never player useable or obtainable.

Caught within the Skyfire Mountains, Ghargin Bumblok faced off against Lyirae Oakwynd and Firiona Vie. The vile fiend was an aid of Danak’s and had slain Lyirae’s brother Lorisyn some time ago. Ghargin met his end by the bow of the brother he slew, in the hands of vengeful sister.

I am a 65 Ranger with a Stonewood & 11 Dam Arrow with EQ & AM3 Plus, My Highest Crit is 2450 (Damage Cap) Like the One guy said .... BUT the Dam Delay rocks Drool, I could deal 2450 Over 2 tiems as fast with 20 Delay and with 175 Dam my Damage would Be Higher More Often ! So Super Ubba Drool , who has this BOW !!!

The damage of the bow doesn't matter at this time. Most "up to date" rangers know that SoE has a cap on archery. Last i heard the highest damage with any bow that can be done is 2450 damage. Even with a 175 damage bow, you won't get higher unless SoE changes the damage cap.

but you would be hitting alot harder alot more often with that much dmg.. you wouldnt even need to crit to own mobs, and you would pwn in pvp

Just a curious thing, but why is it both LORE and ARTIFACT? If it's Artifact, which means only one per server, then where would you have the opportunity to acquire a 2nd one?

The most simple answers is as of this, you can move your toons to different servers , if a ranger already had one from 1 server switched to another server there would now be 2 of these bows on the server , and its tradeable not not drop so its lore, and artifact . now why would someone want 2 of these ? hello its a bow not a sword you can only shoot 1 bow at a time . the more the game goes on the more tomes and aa's get introduced the more powerfull this weapon will hit for i was just talking with a freind and in comparison to my bow this thing would quad with HOA+TS for like 40-50 k add a bane aug to it and a uber arrow and your talking 50-60k i remember there was a rare arrow given out to 3 rangers on every server back in 2000 at a gm event known as the best arrow in the game something like 18 damage 250 range. imagine those stats.

true. And when servers merged, this would have happened for certain. but i dont think any of the best of the best winners for rangers from way back in 99 even still play :(
from my understanding, the "artifact" tag, when it was first created, was supposed to mean that there is only 1 copy of that item per server. That meaning has changed now though, after server merges. Also, check out aegis of the valiant, it is an artifact, but there are Many per server because it's been given as a reward for Multiple GM events. (hooray for inconsistency amongst guides/GMs)
so now, the "artifact" tag seems to have a different meaning than when it was first created. It more just imples that the item is Extremely rare/GM event attained now, IMO. (i think there are some items which are tagged as artifacts but are obtained in ways other than GM events? not certain)

that's true but i don't think anyone still plays who has one of these. like the post on the top said.. you can search eqrankings.com for particular items, and this item does not show up on anyone's magelo (of course it is possible that someone has this somewhere, and just dosent use that site)
i do not know of any ranger who still plays that has this bow.. anyone know someone who still plays and has one? I see the item was updated recently, but the guy who updated it is a necromancer so obviously he does not own the bow.. probably just got a link from someone else via logging onto the FV server and using the /buy command to look the item up.. you can get a link to it like that.
IMO the artifact and lore tags are there just for Storyline/roleplay purposes. it's part of a story, and meant to be a "legendary" item, only one in the whole world of Norrath.
Can anyone confirm if this really was tradeable on FV? I know most otherwise-no-drop items are droppable in FV, but some key ones stil aren't (epics for example?). If so, this would have to be the most expensive item in the game.

Honestly I think it was just a casual programmer decision. Rather than argue whether or not they should flag it lore and what possible implications might lead from not having the lore tag, they probably just said "screw it, lets make it lore and go onto the next item". I doubt more than a 10 seconds went into the decision!
it's tradeable on FV, that's why you can look it up with /buy like i said.
/buy never shows items which are not tradeable.. that's why FV is nice if you need to link an item cross servers or something you can usually use /buy in the FV-bazaar to generate the link.

If a 33dmg bow can crit for 2k, can you imagine what this would hit for? Not to mention this would be the 2nd fastest bow in the game. If sony wouldn't allow a 3/10 weapon to stay in the game, I highly doubt they would let anyone own this. It's also not listed on magelo. I'll believe it when I can inspect the person who's using it.

I was at a RL friend's place when he was playing his upper level toon about two weeks before LDON came out. One of the guys in his party had this bow and linked it to the group. I was just plain out speechless... In fact, my initial reaction was something like this: 
And as a guy who primarily plays rangers, I was drooling, to say the least... Then I was told that it was a GM event prize, and that only one likely existed at any one time on any server, and I was more like: 
Oh, well, c'est la vie, and congrats to any ranger who has this wonderful wonderful bow.

One of these was awarded on the Xegony server a little over a year ago...
i know that this pic was floating around the tarew marr server this past weekend. i was drooling. and i can confirm that the player that had this bow on t-marr does not play anymore. though, i'd gladly take his account off his hands for him :D

That damage bonus of 3 on the screen capture seems sooooo irrelevant lol
This image was being circulated around Veeshan over the past weekend with all the Rangers drooling.
If there is only 1 of these per server i doubt any of thier former owners still play. If a 43 damage bow with modern ranger AA's can crit for over 2k, can you imagine the kind of damage this bow could do. If anyone had this bow, thier name would be known by every ranger across every server. Crits would conservitavly top 10k easily.

Not sure how it's done or if it's still doable, but you used to be able to "mine" the database and link items that either didn't drop or were no longer in the game. SOE got rather miffed about it after people mined the database and were linking items from Plane of Time which hadn't even been entered yet. There was a patch regarding it and a warning that SOE could detect repeated mining attempts and would warn/ban people doing so.
But if you know where to look, it shouldn't be hard to pull up this item and link it around for kicks. Doesn't mean it's still in active play though.

Nothing can't be done when it comes to data files. Unless they hide the info on their end someone will do it again and even then someone could steal the file from their servers eventually...

artifact does not mean it was ONLY from a GM event, i have seen artifact items DROP with the release of new zones, like SolC, ChardokB, and believe it or not LDON. they droped on the first day of release.
Yeah, they can put them in the loot table just like anything else, but if it's an artifact none will drop after the first one. Green Jade Broadsword was initially, and incorrectly, tagged an artifact, so until they fixed it none would drop after the first one on the server.
