Nightshade versus Night Shade
# Aug 13 2005 at 8:12 AM Rating: Decent
I was confused about the discrepancy as well. I think we're on track with this (course, all could change and there could be a bug that proves me wrong):

Nightshade (one word) -> non-tradeskill item
Night Shade (two word) -> tradeskill item for alchemy in various potions (for shammies)

Nightshade (one word) is foraged.
Night Shade (two words) is purchsed through certain vendors
Oggok: Garakbar, Plane of Knowledge: Severg ODanos, Thurgadin: Hulda (at the time of this post).

Night Shade is not used in poisonmaking (often assumed so by myself and most), it is, however used in for variations of purity and poison awareness potions (alchemy).

Inspecting my Nightshade I thought as well was for poisonmaking, just by the name, I noticed this version DOES NOT have a caption stating "This item can be used in tradeskills." Got mine out of a BB LDoN a dark chest

I have had an Azure Nightshade in the bank for a long time. Foraged on Luclin I think. Any ideas what that would be for?

Nightshade are used for alchemy (shaman only)

Combine 1 nightshade / 1 lucerne (vendor sold for 3pp or so) and you get

1 minor potion of purity. It give you stamina and some saves. As alchemy gets better, you can make potions of purity, and you can also make greater potions of purity. They last for 30 minutes or so. Not bad, if you're looking to boost your stats.

This is not the proper Nightshade for the Potion of Purity. After some investigation, there is another called Night Shade (two words). Not sure what Nightshade is for, but it will not combine with Lucerne.
