My lvl 14 Wizard has these (ok, it was a shopping spree in the bazaar), a VERY nice focus effect for any Wizard I must say.

Um, DUH... people are saying these are good for monks because of the 12ac and low weight, they couldn't care less about the focus effect.

i must be god..... improved damage 1 SUCKS... it works until your what? lvl 20 or so? maybe im wrong but it just seems that these would benefit a monk much more than other classes considering they are 12ac and low weight and war/rng/pal/shd all get relatively easy to attain items that are better.... yes these are GREAT for monks until your around lvl 50 or so to get grey flesh sleeves

I have a level 16 wiz, and I would jump high and low for this item. 20% extra damage rocks, especially if I score a critical. Add Improved Range I to the equation, and a wiz can drop a dark blue before he gets to him, without resorting to path-kiting.

Went to Lower Guk twice tonight and got both the Ebony blade and the Azure sleeves in 2 kills. Gave the blade to the Ranger I was with, what a pity Monks can't use it. Anyway, my 2c worth.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the ebony blade, not the azure sleeves when he said monks can't use it.

I wear a set of these but recently got a set of Nathsar vambraces. Lower ac but has dex and agi stat increases. Nathsar are 8ac 4dex 4wis 4agi. What do you think are better? Id the loss of 4ac wirth the stat increases?

It depends. Speaking as a monk here, it gets to a point where stats are more important than AC. Eventually your base AC gets high enough where you can sacrifice some AC to improve your stats, like dexterity and agility. Don't know of any monk who thinks a lumberjack's cap (10ac 3sta) is better than an executioner's hood (5ac 4str 9dex). Of course, the hood is also a great deal lighter, 0.2 instead of 1.5. Despite what many monks might tell you, AC isn't everything. I t really depends on what your AC is at the time as to what you need more of. If your agility and dexterity are relatively low, go with the Nathsar Vambraces. If your agility and dexterity are already pretty good, go with the azure sleeves, they're a really good monk item with their high AC for their weight, always a good measure of monk armor.
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 23 2001 at 9:11 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Considering how little stats like agility and dexterity (which is especially worthless) do, it is NEVER worth it to sacrifice AC for stat increases. Hit Points and, at higher levels, resists are the only things that a knowledgable monk would ever consider sacrificing AC for.

# May 06 2002 at 3:03 PM Rating: Good
Hi, I'm a monk here, and I just wanted to add some light of my own. I would take the executioner's hood over the lumberjack's cap. Mostly because I do value stats over AC. As a monk, I can usually just FD when ever I start being hit by the mobs I'm attack (I almost never solo so there's always a tank or something to take the agro in my group). This eventually became a habbit, and I started to realize, "Why do I need AC if I'm not being hit all that often?" And it was about then that I started selling my high AC items for better stat items, and 20 levels later, it hasn't backfired on me yet.
RE: comparison

His advice was pretty good. *IF* the person needs higher dex and agil, then it might be worthwhile dropping 4ac for the stats. It seems to me that bumping up stats has much greater effect when they are already low, not so much when they are already high. For example, my wood elf (base agil 105, currently 121 with my gear) only gains 2ac from Feet like Cat. That's not even worth casting. If you had low agility, you're probably gain significantly more.

BTW, I sold my Tolan's arms (18ac) when I got my Gladiator chain (16ac + pile of stats). That was well worth it.

But listen to Harbaugh. Anyone seen wearing Serpentine bracers will be harshly laughed at. I might get a lumberjack's cap for my iksar monk too, both for the high ac (which alone might not be worth the weight) but also for the sta, which is pathetically low on iksar.
RE: comparison
# Jan 03 2002 at 5:58 PM Rating: Decent
Actually the ac diff with iksars isn't that big. The reason iksar make good monks is their faster regen, especially at higher levels. That's what we are paying for when we take our 20% experience penalty.

Yep, it's a balance... trolls and iksar have the faster regen, which they balance out with less experience per kill. But it's a pretty fair balance; sure we get less exp per kill, but we alos have less downtime.

The ac bonus that iksars have is like having a piece of armor with 12ac. At high levels that doesn't mean much, but it's a nice boost at lower levels when you can't afford the great armor.

Every monk I have ever met, if they make it into their 50s, has told me that HP > AC, without a shadow of a doubt. If you consider this, you'll understand: AC is low on Monks/Rangers/Rogues, to a point where you're *going* to get hit. The best you can do is get buffed to the max. Now, considering that you are *going* to get hit, wouldn't you A) rather have more HP so you can take more of those hits and B) Do as much damage as you can while avoiding as many of those hits as you can?

To do damage you need = DEX! Yes! Surprise! Dex calculates how often you hit, especially with Monks and their special attacks, Rangers and their bows (any lvl 60 Ranger with Endless Quiver and Archery Mastery is insane to go into melee range and had better damn well have good Dex to land as many arrows as possible).

To avoid hits you need = AGI! Wow! OMG! Agi calculates how often you use your Dodge, Block, Parry. AC calculates how much damage is done when the mob *does* hit, doesn't calculate *if* the mob hits, and against larger mobs, AC is almost pointless unless you're a Warrior and have many thousands of AC.

Now....knowing these things...I would gladly sacrifice 5 points of AC to be doing more damage and taking less hits in general. And yeah, I do have a Monk.

Hehe, I don't know whch monks you've met who say that hp is worth more than ac, as every monk I've met higher than 50 says just the opposite. Heck, so does every monk I've met over 40. HP is nice at lower levels, when your defensive skills are low and your ac doesn't protect as much, but at higher levels, and even at lower ones, it's better to prevent losing hp in the first place then to have more to lose.

This holds even more true, as they nerfed monks; I checked the parses both before and after the nerf, what I've noticed is with the same amount of AC, I'm getting hit no more often, but when I do get hit, it's for more average damage. So the ac doesn't protect us as well as the same amount did before, but more ac still means less damage. But think about it; in a reasonably long battle, where you going to get hit a bunch of times, what do you think would be better? Having more hit points, which you'll lose anyway, due to how hard you're getting hit, or having more ac, which reduces the dmage you take every time you get hit? The only time hp gives more benefit than ac is in very short battles.

AC may be relatively low for rogues and rangers, but AC is NOT generally low for monks. Check out the profiles on Magelo for monks and compare to warriors/Shadow Knights/Paladins of the same level. Monk AC can rival if not surpass that of the heavy armor users because of their inate AC bonus. Strip a monk naked and the AC is quite good.

Dex has never shown to be anything special for monks since it is used for proc'ing weapons, and for range weapons. To my knowledge Dex has never been shown to improve attack on melee, but str does, nor on monk specials. As for Agi I personally think it does improve my dodge/block/reposte but others will say I'm wrong, and others will agree. I'm really not sure about Agi.

Here is my story:

25th lvl monk with base dexterity(iksar monk) was missing on average 3 out of 5 shots ... not very good. I was told to go increase my dex AND agility(which was also base). I took his advice, bought 2 dex/agi rings, and a 7/7 dex/agi necklace. Went to test it out, from that point on and for 2 more levels(which is where i am now 27th lvl) I HIT on avg of 3.5 out of 5 swats, I see more triples, and more dual wields.

Now I can't say for sure this is all due to my dex going up, and of course someone will reply and say I am an idiot and these have nothing to do with me hitting better(must tbe my server gm hiding in the bushes and helping me) BUT i will disagree til I am blue in the face. And as a side note, I get hit less often since the agi boost too ... and I have pretty much solo'd til 27.

I did make one mistake with my monk, i put points into str(what a waste of 20 points), if I could go back I would dump ALL 20 into stamina. I am finding strength items are a dime a dozen lately ... hp items are closer to a mil a dozen /sigh

We all know that Dex does most certainly improve hit frequencies and combat skills but what you guys are forgetting about is that until you reach the pinnacle of your success (i.e. when you ding level 60) you WILL miss often!...That's just to keep the game challenging and "realistic"...and that is the reason your weapon skills are capped at every level and the reason you will never see a lvl 25 as a master in any weapon area...so missing is normal even with high Dex!!

"Lower ac but has dex and agi stat increases"

Since you didn't mention the wisdom in this sentence, I'm going to assume that you're a monk. Azure Sleeves are better, no contest.
#REDACTED, Posted: Dec 01 2001 at 1:25 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It all depends on your class...If you are a monk...AC/hp/str are the best stats to increase (in order of importance). So if you are a monk....no. Say you are a Druid or a Shaman....AC is not as important as the Wis/Agi/Dex..so in that case yes. I hope this helps.

Azure are 1/10 times blade is 1/5 times. Just to make that clear. He is lvl 34-36 and spawns near live side near the pat room. He begins to wander USE SNARE when attacking. Will get at least another 1 mob with him. He casts some weak fire spells (some think it is a proc). He sometimes gets an afterspawn called embued gargoyle. It is slow and easily avoided. It is 36 or soas well. Drops nothing doesn't cast and hits for about 10 more than the Mino Par does, but this after spawn is rare. If you do kill him get a screen shot. People actually pay money for his screen shot. Looks like golden sotne monkey (gargolye)
