Can't there be factions to get to the merchant?
The two guards at the entrance to Erudin in Toxxulia Forest are on the High Guard of Erudin faction. You should be able to run past them and into the zone where Valani is without too much trouble. Zone line is close to where the guards are.
Valani is on Merchants of Erudin faction. While there are quests to raise these factions, you need to already be Amiable to the questgivers in Erudin to do them most of the time.

This pattern is No Drop and can only be obtained by true Erudites. My Erudite illusion did not fool Valani Gadriek. This also means the final combine for the robe(s) must be done by an Erudite tailor.

Except on FV, where all cultural robe patterns are trade-able. But they still have to be obtained by someone of the correct race.
