As another ranger stated, I'm not going to waste time switching out my bow for this just for the stats (especially since my bow has better stats than this). As far as true north, compasses, sense heading, etc, it's all worthless if you just take a few minutes to figure out how /loc works. Hit /loc, take a few steps, hit /loc again, and you should be able to figure out which way you're going (unless you're canadian... jk)
I got this item for the stats, easy quest, while i was in the fort got my troll heads for the ring, 2 easy quests with decent rewards. While your down there if your spending serious time in LoY you can camp the charm that drops from the gnome, i havent gotten it yet, No interest until i finish greenmist tho, well have fun,
I know that procs raise casting skills. Do clicks do the same? If so, this would be worth getting to raise divination. A half-second cast with no recast is damn nice for skill ups.
For many levels when I was younger I carried a Parrying Dagger on me and dropped it when I needed to know which way was which. A dropped weapon always points North, Clouds always blow West.

Compasses and sense heading have both gone the way of the dinosaurs with the release of LoY's mapping system.Lost?Bring up your map.Besides, after spending 3 or 4 lvl's in a zone,do you really need to use either of these anyway? It's only worth are the stats..IMO
As an ogre shadowknight, I can't imagine getting out a sheaf of maps and studying them, so the cartography icon doesn't get used when I'm playing my ogre.
However, a quick glance at a compass seems credible for him, so he's got two of the three pieces for this nice item put aside so far.
Just because, as players, we have access to information and resources doesn't necessarily mean we, as players, allow our characters to have the same access. I wouldn't even call it roleplaying, it's just automatic for me to do things one way with an ogre and another with a dark elf, say.
I can go for the roleplay excuse if you also snap the bones of your foes and suck the marrow from their twitching bodies as they struggle to pull away in agony and fear.
But since they've neglected to add the bone breaking and marrow patches this week, I'd say any ogre smart enough to use magically enhanced armor or weapons would be wise enough to use a map too.
Even if it's drawn in crayon, coals, or bloody stump squiggly lines.
Learning to wield a sword or strap on some armor, magical or not, is a far cry from orienteering.
And how would you explain all the players in EQ with characters of 255+ INT, yet who can't find their way to a group, and have to be led there by hand?
An intelligent person can roleplay a stupid character, but a stupid person can't roleplay an intelligent character.
I can totally buy an Ogre that can't read maps, or at least finds it such a pain in the azz that they don't bother with it.
Sense Heading is still useful. WHen you max at 200 sense heading always works, the ui compass always points in the right direction, and on the map you get an arrow showing which direction you're facing.
I play a ranger and always have my bow in my range slot. I use my bow to often to move it out of my range slot. It's my crit hit weapon, and pulling device of choice. I think that this would be a better charm slot item than range slot. I would love to have the additional stats but then I would feel defensless. Just my 2cp, take it for what it's worth. If it wasn't a nodrop item I might think about doing the quest and handing it down to one of my other characters but as is, it would really be a waste of my time. I believe all the melee classes that use bows for crits would agree with my asessment of this item.
I use a bow as well, but switch it out after I have pulled the mob with my Idol of the Thorned. Thus giving me the ability to use my bow and a nice range item. I have 2 hot keys set up that allow me to do the switch very effectively. And when I'm going up against casters I will switch the bow out with a Ceremonial Smudging Stick.
This item in itself is decent for a lower level person. Anyone who has less than 100 sense heading cannot trust/use thier compass reading, as its only accurate a certain percentage of the time. Once you are above the 100 cap though, its useless.
Yes but since this is a no drop item and you have to be in the 40's to aquire it, I think people would be using this item purely for it's stats. Or are there really people that never bothered to work on sense heading through 45 levels of play?
Actually, I can think of one person who didn't, the lvl 65 froglok cleric on the Xev server :P
PS: It says it points south east yet the effect used is true north. That's kinda funny. What kind of compass would point south east anyway?
"Or are there really people that never bothered to work on sense heading through 45 levels of play?"
Actually I haven't. Or have very little. I'm level 55 now, and there is no way I'm going to click that stupid button 10,000 times to increase my direction skill. Verant put that in as a timesink to waste time. Go to a merchant and buy a compass for 3p and save yourself the sore fingers.
Um, my sense heading is only at 145 and that's only because I set it on a hot key auto effect to get it up just cause I wanted my WAR alt to have it and when you set one hot key to react with direction keys, it activates on all your characters.
its pointing southeast because the person taking the picture was facing southeast at the time. When you right click, you immediately face north.... thus your compass would face north.
I mean it makes sense, if your facing a certain direction (arrow is pointing north on the compass) and the compass direction arrow is facing whatever way your at.. (I.E. southeast) wouldn't the compass face be pointing southeast?
You dont have to have a compass in your posession to use it. If someone else links it to you, you can use the link to use the compass and it works just as it would in your inventory.

Sense animal not worthless. Being a druid kiting mobs in WW if often end up with no animals near enough to be shown on track. That spell can help a lot.
True north i cant see a big use for though, being that the new map system always shows what direction you walking in :(
I have to agree with you on Sense animal, and in WW too. comes in Handy trying to find Velium Hounds, though sometimes they find you when you don't want you to find them. :P
Not a bad little Range Item as well. Compareable with the Thurgadin Seal from the Third shawl quest, the added 5 str is nice too.

This is a very interesting item. I remember when this game was very new and my sense heading sucked, I used a compass to find my way around frequently. To see a "magical compass" that when activated does more than a normal compass (turns your dumb butt around and points you north) is priceless.
I went and got this item just for its roleplaying appeal. Mind you it is also a pretty fun range slot item for me (a mage).
