Useful tip for rogues that don't know...

This could also apply to any character with the ability to hide.

I've noticed that when I loot a corpse, there is a small delay between /loot and the loot window appearing. You can use this small delay to your advantage. Simply target a corpse, put "/loot" in your command line, but do NOT hit enter yet! Put your mouse over your hide button. Now, as soon as you hit enter to use the /loot command, during the small delay before the loot window pops up, hit the hide button with your mouse! Poof, you'll hide *before* you loot, and you'll be hidden while you loot! I've used this technique several times to loot corpses. After you're done looting, you'll still be hidden, so if you were already sneaking, then you can simply slip away with the loot.

This can also be used to buy/sell with merchants in hostile territory... ;)
Thank you all!

I am a lvl 5 Bard. I just got this mask with the help of several people. I only died 3 times. The first time I died, I was stupid and tried to run through LGuk without IVU (Invisibility Versus Undead), and proceded to die quickly. Next time I just sat at the zone line and shouted to see if anyone wanted to help me get to the room. A very nice Cleric thought it was very amusing that I made my way all the way there and showed me to the room.
Once I was there, the first thing I did was make sure it was okay for me to stand around (well, cower in a corner actually) and wait for the mask to drop. It was fine. So, I was then begining to think I was about to get it. I was very wrong. I stood there for about 3 hours waiting for the pop. It didnt happen. I got kinda bored so I went and made myself something to eat. When I got back Frogloks had killed 2 Warriors in the group and the Cleric had very little left. The whole group died, myself included. The Ranger logged his Enchanter and pulled the Clerics corpse to another rezzing Cleric. The Cleric rezzed most everyone before me so I wouldnt die. Right before I clicked accept, the Cleric told me the assasin had died, and the mask was mine to loot.
I got back and there are ALOT of high lvl people. Clerics, Paladins.... lots. They killed some more stuff while the Cleric got mana to IVU everyone. Once the Cleric got mana, he casted the invis, and we were off! My invis wore off alittle to quickly..... LOADING, PLEASE WAIT.
The Cleric dragged my corpse to the zoneline and rezzed again. I thanked everyone several more times and then logged.
Well, I would like to thank you all again. I thank the entire guild Knights of Force, the Dark Elf Cleric Deor, for showing me to the *** Suo room, all the high level people that kept the room safe for a lvl 5 Bard, and last, and DEFINATLY not least, Torbin, the Dwarf Cleric who rezzed, healed and invised me so many times.

THANKS ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your friendly neighborhood Bard, Konartis

my friend has a WE rouge that got this thing at level 10. he had a couple of high level friends kill the assassin, then he looted. he also has a full set of ry'gorr armor on (also purchased by the high levels), and i think the ry'gorr looks WAAAAY better on a dark elf than it does on a wood elf. you don't have to wear to have the effect, just put it on, cast the spell, take it off.

Um... just a question... Is this like the Jboots? Like you donĀ“t have to have them equipped to be able to use the effect?

You have to have it equipped to cast the effect, but once it's cast you can unequip it without cancelling the effect. Also, when you zone, the illusion fades.

It must be equiped for effect.
My Story
# Aug 26 2001 at 4:56 AM Rating: Default
Well, me, a barbarian rogue, just got my mask of deception today. I actually died a lot trying to get the mask. I wanted to remain bound in Everfrost as a newbie so that I can respawn in Everfrost when I die exp'ing. Because I kept on dying on the way to Guk (for various reasons, accidentally drowning while auto-running in the Karanas and afk, dying to undeads in Kithicor unheededly) Well, anyway, I had no trouble getting through Guk. Being a Barb rogue worshipping Bristlebane allowed me to remain dubious to live frogloks. Thus, my travelling through uguk was a breeze (I have great understanding of uguk and lguk from experiences) My swimming, hiding, and sneaking skills were maxxed for my level (level 5), cuz I wanted to be able to swim through the river tunnel when I arrive in lguk. Well, it turned out that while sneaking (without SoW), I couldn't get out of the river, so I had to get drop my rogue invis and get a IU (invis versus undead) to get out. When I began hiding/sneaking throughout lower guk, I made sure everything in my path was indifferent to me. It was really weird that one vampire bat managed to see through my rogue invis and conned "ready to attack" to me. Fortunately, I was nowhere near the bat at the time of discovery. Everything else, maybe even including BTGs (bloodthirsty ghouls), remained indifferent to me with the exception of the ghoul lord. The first time I arrived in lguk, the zone was practically empty, so I went down to the live side and took off invis and got ready to camp. For some reason, one ghoul was wondering through the live side at the time and killed me :( Mind that I was bound in Everfrost the whole time (I didn't want having to try to get a bind and having to respawn in Halas every time I died after I get the mask). Then the second time I arrived in lguk, it turned out that there were only 3 groups in lower guk at that moment (being on Rallos Zek, there are only a little more than half the number of groups at any moment in any zone compared to blue servers), and that a two man group was camping the Assassin. As soon as I arrived there, an assassin popped and got me the mask. As I left the room, even though my hide and sneak buttons were still pressed, I had already lost my invis due to looting of the mask. Good thing I noticed as I went down the ladder and conned a nearby ghoul. It was a good thing that the zone was clear and that I was able to get out of the river past BR (bedroom) by taking off sneak.

Anyhow, after I arrived back in Everfrost, it came to me as a big shock and disappointment when I found that I could not use the mask as a level 5...

Well, there's my story.

BTW, does anyone know what level I can start using the mask? Thanks.

There is an Iksar mask from TT, and a high elf mask. The later is hard to get, as it basically requires doing the rogue epic quest seperatly to get.

all these people who say they have no trouble waiting in line to get this mask either have incredible luck.. or it is i with a curse. i have been waiting a grand total of 9 hours to get this drop, and have died 3 times in the process. and i STILL have not gotten it. i am extremely frustrated right now and slightly ticked. i'm beginning to think i have the worst luck in this game, lol.

Yep, you have crappy luck. Or maybe I just have incredible luck. I took two trips to lguk, never died. The first time the only other people in the zone were trying to get the mask themselves, so i looted all the corpses they left laying around and then left to do more important things. I made about 75pp or more just from looting their 'trash', so i didn't consider that trip a waste. I came back later when more people were likely to be in the zone. I shouted if anyone was on the assassin then asked him if i could have the mask if it dropped. He said wait in line because there was another rogue ahead of me who already asked. However, when the mask dropped, the other rogue was nowhere to be seen, so i got the mask. The rogue came back a few minutes later and said that he went LD, but congratulated me on my good luck. If you're careful, there's no way you'll die in lguk. The only mob that can see though hide are the sonic bats, but you don't even have to go near them. Go through the spider hallways and gargoyle room instead. Another thing to be careful of is getting out of the river on your way out. If you have sneak on, you won't have enough speed to get out of the water, unless you have sow, which is unlikely. My first time out i just turned sneak off and on again when i was on land; unfortunately, i didn't see the two ghoul shin knights behind me. Fortunately, i zoned just before they could kill me. The second time out i took a different approach. If there are baddies hanging around where you usually get out of the river, keep going to the waterfall room. While keeping sneak and hide on you can swim straight up the waterfall (only in EQ =P) and safely get out of the water onto one of the nearby rocks and from there down the path to the zone edge. Good luck,

pardon my silly question, but can one wear the mask and enter neriak even with bad faction there? being a halfling, i like to help the poor halfling settlers in nektulos by ambushing DE guards, so my faction there must be low. once i get the mask, ambush will be that much easier. but will that affect the effectiveness of the mask?

Have any Wood Elf rogues/bards gotten and worn this? It would seem that Wood Elves can wear it, but it doesn't say they can (unless I'm misreading the pic on this site).

Thanks in advance for the info.

# Aug 06 2001 at 12:26 PM Rating: Decent
If you can not contribute to the kills please stop begging for the mask. Having 2-6 teens in that tiny room makes it hard to fight. Come back when you are 30+ and can actually HELP kill for it.

Bah humbug! What made you so grumpy? Just because you had a hard time growing up your character doesn't mean you shouldn't help others. It took those teens guts to make their way there and it would suck to deny them what they wanted just because you were in a bad mood. If Verant thought that it was unfair to have teens picking up this item and not waiting til they were 30+, they would change it. Why would they make the lvl for effect 15 if they were planning on only 30+ people looting it? And they could have taken off no drop so it would be farmed like mad and sold to twinks everywhere. In my opinion, if a lvl 15 makes his way to lower guk and waits patiently for a mask to drop that isn't needed by the person who killed the assassin, he deserves it. Getting this mask was a refreshing change to the usual "WTB ..." routine.

Took me four hours and four deaths but I got the mask and a basalt carapace... and 2 yellows of XP. Those damn wizards down there nuke for 250 and they sure like to nuke my poor bard! I'm sticking with the Bedroom group until at least 35 now. With an IVU and the correct map, gettting to the assassin isn't tough. Getting the assassing to pop however is, as that was the first one in 6 hrs. the group had seen. Good luck and come see the inky in his new Lambent BP!

I got it today

BTW, for the guy that said nothing will see through sneak and hide if its above 86 is wrong. I am a 21 rogue and went down there today, my hide is 120, my sneak is like 118. The vampire bats could see through it, the balsilk gragoyles (or whatever) could see through it, and a froggie wizzy saw through it and killed me as I waited.

Long story short though, I camped the room for almsot 4 hours for my turn at it, there were two ahead of me. Im sitting in the back of the room, hidden when all of a sudden, something aggros me throught he wall, it was a wizzy. I died in like three hits and pissed off the people in the room. Luckily they felt bad that I had been sitting there for so long and revived me, so I got my mask. The funny part is, I made it in and out without dying, the only time I died was when something mysteriously aggroed me through a wall, while I was hidden no less.

I went down there at lvl 20 and again at lvl 24; nothing ever saw through my hide. I stayed away from the bats, as i had heard rumors that they could see through hide, but i had absolutely no trouble going through the gargoyle and wizard areas. It may be that the wizzies didn't see me long enough to see through hide, but i stopped in the gargoyle room in the middle of 3 gargoyles and just sat there taking screenshots. No aggro. It may be that hiding succesfully also depends on dexterity. That seems logical since I have a dex of 156.

If you read through these posts, you'll see in several cases the rogues died AFTER getting the mask and while trying to leave the zone. The fact is that rogue Hide/Sneak is BROKEN WHEN YOU LOOT THE MASK, even though the buttons are still greyed out (Verant needs to fix this), Simply click them off and start them up again, and you should have no problem leaving the zone.

Record time ...
# Jun 13 2001 at 7:14 PM Rating: Good
Got mine by waiting, and I kid you not ... 30 seconds, last night. Hmmm, a 60th level Shadowknight on my server, Bagbokk, got an aggro by the assassin, ran back to the zone, told me to log in, I looted it, equipped it and activated it in record time :)

(I have the most insane luck that it was 1) not camped, 2) popped at the right time, and 3) dropped the mask first time. Rest of the night continued to lose lottos, I think I burned up all my luck in one hit that night :P)

I tell you something, as we discuss loot and all here ... nothing matters more in EQ than the friends you make ... so you can pull off stuff like this. Be nice, and people are willing to be nice back!

Also, be polite, even to newbies ... one newbie I helped out now beats my main in level. (Gave her a Runic Carver at level 6) Make friends with people on your server, and your EQ life will be much easier.

Just my 2 cp :)

You were lucky that the assassin a)wasn't camped and b)popped at the right time, but the mask is the common drop and almost always dropped. If you were really lucky the serrated bone dirk would have dropped. :)
Easy
# Jun 10 2001 at 10:38 AM Rating: Default
I got this at a low level. All you have to do is ask if anyone is camping the assassin and ask them to send you a tell if it drops. Then get an IVU and run to the room. Be sure to look at a map first. The only tough parts are the bat room (that can see you) and the water tunnel (which you are only in for a few seconds, depending on your swimming skill). The only thing that takes long is waiting for it to drop. I just practiced my instrument skills while I waited.

Ok, heres my story.
Went in at 12:00 pm (night) and was right there waiting, a levle 52 pally soloed him adn the mask dropped. Im a level 9 rogue in hide/sneak and right b4 i can loot it, about 15 seconds b4 actually, something sees through invis and wahcks me /cry. I come back, pull corpse to zone and loot, its now 12:45ish and a new group has started cmaping him, but this time i have to roll against a bard in there group. Lots o froggey's pop up and down, then *** spawns, has Serrated Bone dirk. Player 1 in group wins roll. Two more spawns and he pops again with thew mask, lose to the bard by 25 about /cry. Spawns twice more in a row both with Serrated Dirk's, player 4 in group and player 1 again wins, but player 1 turns nice and lets me buy the second one he got from him for 1pp /cheer /thank Saitou. Then three more spawns go by and he pops again, with the mask and i get it, finally. But there is more tragedy, on my way out after thanking the group, I can't make it out of the water with hide/sneak on, sooooooooooo i decide to make a dash for it and take off sneak/hide, jump outa water, run for the zone and die inches b4 the zone line /cry. Come back, loot corpse and run back to South Ro where i camped Exhausted (its now 4:30am). So there is my tradegedy story to all you people and good luck getting it!

Wait a minute. You're level NINE and you're randoming on the mask? What right do you have? You're obviously not nearly high enough to actually help with the fight, so why should you be able to random on the item against people who are actually working for it?

Yes! I got it the other day and I must say I love it. This is what I recommend low lvl rogues should do to get it...
First I went to EQ Atlas and printed out a map of Upper Guk, Lower Guk Dead Side, and Lower Guk Live Side (just incase) so I could know where I'm going. Next I went to the bank and put all my armor and weapons into it b/c I was almost certain I was going to die =), and then after that, I made my way through the desert and the swamp to Upper Guk. Once I got there I used my map to get half way to the zone (I recommend the zone to LGuk Dead Side that's along the wall to the far east and not the one's that are in the water) but then I got a high lvl Troll to show me the rest of the way. Once I got to LGuk Dead Side I shouted if anyone was camping the Assasin Room. someone then shouted yes (and it just happen to be a high lvl friend of mine so that made it easier). I begain to sneak/hide and made my way past all those KoS undead Frogloks. Note: There is a underground water way that may seem hard for people with low stamana (like me) to get through while your sneaking and hiding but I would just like to say that if you continue to sneak and hide all u have to do is just go right up to it and swim near the top and u can make it. I followed my map again past the spiders and skellies and gargoiles (Oh my!) till I finally got to the Assasin room. (note that on the EQ Atlas map, the Assasin room is number 14 and it's called the "store room") I waited in a corner for my friend and then some more group to camp the assasin. (I recommend, yet again, that u stand up in the corner so that the assasin dosent agro on YOU since he can see through sneak/hide; the troll that showed me through Upper Guk was in the next group hehe) I was second on the list but the halfling that was first disappeared somewhere so I got first to be first. Later on, my group killed the assasin, I got the mask, and I snuck out of there as a Dark Elf!!!
If your a rogue but to low to camp the assasin for yourself like me, then I think you should do what I did to get it. As for bards, I'm not sure how they could get the mask yet. I guess they could use an invisable spell or something (I don't know much about spells) but I'm still not sure. Hope my info helped someone out!!!
This should help.

Copy and paste the link into your browser if you can't click on it. It's a good guide for getting the mask courtesy of The Safehouse. Good luck.

Also, when I did this around level 10, I asked for an IVU at the zone. Made sure to ask if the assassin was camped and if I could loot the mask if noone else needed/wanted it. I used a map of LGuk from eqatlas.com to find my way around. Took me about 3 hours of waiting before it dropped. Only time I died was trying to figure out how to leave guk :-)
