Got Lucky
# Mar 21 2003 at 9:38 PM Rating: Decent
Hehe, after a month of several failed attempts to simply get down there, I finaly convince some of my guildies to go down and camp it with me. As it happened, they were all 50+ so it was no biggy cuting throu the undead and live alike.

Anyways we finaly get to the ***/sup room, right as we get there 2 knights spwan, and are killed quickly. So we settle down for a 2 or 3 hr wait. I just happen to turn around and see a froggy corpse laying in the wall, that must have been killed by a previous group. Just outa boredom I decide to loot it to see if there's any thing intersting on it.

Much to my surprise it was an assassin's corpse and it had the mask, loot it, put it on to show off, and then port out. All-in-all we "camped" the room for maybe 3 min. So it was a very lucky break for us.

This is sooo easy

Did this with my level 10 Halfling Rogue and was surprisingly easy! I used the walkthru from safehouse which is very good. Could have been easier if I hadnt overdone turning in some CB belts I had omw there (didn't mean to ding 10 until after). My swimming was at 2 my hide and sneak both at 50. I took my gear with me (this I do not recommend) becuase I didnt want to destroy my tailored bags in the bank or the ones on me. I must have passed 20 Frogs and the room full of skellys on the way and did die just short of camp spot when a Frog saw thru Hide/Sneak but that was my own stupidity for going in the AM hours when very few were there killing the Frogs and they all were up. Got lucky a Pally found me and sent a tell asking if I wanted to get my stuff out of Guk (in this case having my gear payed off!) Once at the campspot in walkthru I camped out.

Came back next day, hit hide immediately and did campcheck then asked for looting rights which were cheerfully given to me' waited about an hour and boom my cpu goes haywire and locks up ( had to buy a new power supply cause the fan in it crapped out and overheated the processor).

Came back the following day Hide/Campcheck/Ask for LR and waited about 30 minutes then boom come grab the mask! Had to sneak out due to being over 10 but still easy no problems on the exit run. Dont see where the swim part is supposed to be hard its very short and dont have to stay under water long jumped out in BR right in front of Frog Wizard with 2 others in room (whoa big rush!)

I did try it from inventory before I knew the level requirement and it said you must equip this item and when I tried from face it said you are not of sufficient will to use this item. Now to ding 15 so I can use it )

I have an eqatlas map and it dose not mention the Assain/sup room or any bed room. Where is this room on the map please. Even a LOC would help.
I read all the posts here and the closest I get is someone mentioned the evileye and in others the Minotaun Patriarch. But wandering around in S/H mode just got me killed by a Big hand. LOL Thanks for any Help.

No, provided the mask is in one of my primary inventory slots I can right-click the effect from there. From what I know of the history of the mask (and the fact that everyone posts that only rogues and bards can use it), I'm guessing only rogues and bards will be able to right-click it from the inventory slots.

Minimum level to use the effect is 15, whether you're a bard or rogue, both classes have smae minimum level. You can WEAR it before 15 and get the stats, but you have to be 15 to use the effect.

Let me see if i got this. You need to do some swimming in lower guk while s/h. Why don't you just get a mage to summon some water stones so you can have let me see ENDURING BREATH. I think that should make the swim in lower guk a little easier.

The longest swim I ever had to do underwater in Lower Guk didn't even use half the air on a character who at the time had 0 swimming. Wouldn't really worry about EB in LGuk.

It isn't just the swimming that could pose the problem, its the swimming skill while sneak/hide. Never did it this way so I couldn't tell you, but I could imagine that its long enough that if you don't have a high enough swimming skill it could give you some grief.

You really need a swim skill of about 65 to get to the Bedroom, and hence the Supply Room, while in Sneak/Hide. I went there last night (didn't get the mask, though) and with swimming 65, I barely made it. Getting out of the water while in Sneak/Hide is really hard, BTW.

I am seriously concidering uploading my map I made, or making an image of it... The longest swim I had kind of did suck. I only had swimming like (6) and it would have taken a little over half my air. I have never gone any other ways, but I think the way I went may have been one of the safest. If I had sneak, hide off the swim would have gone better, and I think it would have been safe to turn off. The person I was with gave me enduring breath.

Secondly sneak hide is not some terribly difficult thing. you turn it on, confirm its on with see invis, look for ( ), or con an undead guy, and then just DONT turn it off. Thats it. Its scary, but you will be fine.

As a matter of fact, even if you could take all of lower guk alone, the sneak and hide is great. And yes, with a good sow, its like walking.

Found a decent walkthrough on the Safehouse Boards http://pub117.ezboard.com/fthesafehouselibraryreadonly.showMessage?topicID=93.topic and used it to make my way into LG. My plan was to use my 44 Druid and 42 Warrior (both SoW'd and buffed) to camp the room, then log on my 28 Rogue and loot the mask. 2 days and 5 deaths later, I finally accomplished it. Here's where I missed the mark...

The walkthough gives you 2 ways to the Assassin's room through LG, the Dead side (apparently preferred by the traveling rogues due to ease with Hide/Sneak) and alternatively, the Live side. My first attempt was with my Druid and Warrior on the dead side, fighting my way in. It being my first time in the zone I had to repeatedly look at the map from http://www.eqatlas.com and put myself at risk every time I did so. Sure enough, I get to the BR and I get trained with some gargoyles. I didn't have lesser evac up, and tried to run using 2 comps at once. Not happening; dead. So I decide to try another approach, the Live side. I entered as described in the Safehouse walkthrough and Superior Camo'd my warrior as I had leveled in UG many a time and my faction was less than amiable. After about 10 mins of running around, again having to stop and look a the map on occasion, I came upon the Minotaur Patriarch (http://eqbeastiary.allakhazam.com/search.shtml?id=3460) and just as the walkthrough states, he can cast see invis. Well, I decided to take him on...but after about 2 mins I found out he called for backup. Evac.

This is where I really started questioning whether I really needed this darn mask...

What it came down to was after spending a bit of time in LG, I became familiar with the maze and eventually made my way through the Dead side with my camp team, and through the Live side with my Rogue Sup. Camo'd to get by the Gargoyles. The camp itself was quite boring, being that I wasn't wanting to take any chances by pulling extra mobs between spawns after how hard it was to get it together and get to the camp. Was there about 4 hours or so (2 spawns of the Assassin and 2 spawns of the Supplier, who do not share PH's).
Now, for some info I haven't seen posted here yet:
1)The Assassin/Supplier room has 3 mobs, 2 of which are PH's for the Assassin and the Supplier.
2)All of them seem to be on the same spawn cycle, approx. 30 mins (the one time I actually clocked them it was 29 mins).
3)The hallway leading up to the room has side hallways leading down to lower levels. If you've ever spent any time in dungeons you know that when a mob is directly above or below you there is still a chance of you agro-ing them as an add, or like I did, sitting down in what was apprently the wrong spot. I ended up having about 8 mobs come up from the lower level on my way out. This is after I got the mask and decided to camp my warrior to get the rogue out first. I was caught off guard and had just happened to be casting a heal on my warrior when....dead.

One side note: The knights and such were fairly easy, just make sure you snare everything, the adds you can get in here are horrendous. The wizards, on the other hand, are quite nasty. DD's in the range of 320, only resisted a few with 99 MR buffed.

Well, I think that does it. Sorry about the extensive post, but this has been such an endeavor...

Sorry, it only works with a bard or rogue. There was a version I think called Guise of the Deceiver that all classes could wear, but it was removed from the game a long time ago and was replaced with the mask of deception.

Since a few patches back I can now right click the mask from my inventory without it being equiped.. I have talked to other rogues and bards that have it though, and im the only one I have found that can do this. Has anyone else been able to click it without it being equiped?

For as long as I can remember, this mask has always been a clickable from any inventory slot. You can normally tell if an item has to be equipped because it will have a 'must equip.' label before the casting time. An example of this label can be found on the Arms of Augmentation here: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=10343
I could be wrong, but I believe that the label was introduced around about the time that Luclin came out last year, at the same time as the casting time began to be shown, so some images on this site are out of date. If you look at the image of the Mrylokar's Bracer: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=892 you will see they don't mention needing to be equipped, but if you inspect a pair now, they do have a 'must equip.' label.
How to get this pain-free style
# Sep 04 2002 at 8:55 PM Rating: Excellent
Ok, here comes a tip on how to get this without worrying way to much about what happens in Lguk.
First, buy another backpack, and stick all your armor and weapon (unless you aren't afraid of losing them in the bank). I highly reccomend selling or depositing your other items too.
Lets face it, Lguk is a nasty place... so if you die, you dont want to come back, right? Of course not.
Ok, now that your valuables are safely stored in the bank, get a cheap melee weapon to take out those skelles that you'll meet along the way.(I dont have any idea why Verant lets green skelles aggro).
Also, bring something to do... Stacks of wolf meat and stacks of cooking supplies and a spit are cheap, and its not time wasted... (rogues, this is a great time to work on fletching, and sell/give arrows to campers for their help.)
Now, I HIGHLY reccomend either buying a sow potion, or just bumming one from your neighborhood shammy/druid. Now you're ready to go.
Head to Lguk, and (making sure that you can make the swim to the bedroom) head on over to the assasin camp... Ask the local campers if you may loot the mask, provided they aren't camping it. Now, find a safe place to hide, and get to work on that tradeskill until he pops and is killed.
After you get your beloved MoD, get outta there!
This is a plan only to help you keep from losing everything you have in a place that is about as welcoming as the sharp end of a Centi Longsword.

I truly hopes this helps any of you who were skeptical on getting this...

If the bard (or rogue) you want to have this mask is under 10, easy way to get it:

First, just walk thru Upper Guk until you get to the zone in LGuk Dead Side closest to the safe hall (if you haven't killed any frogloks, and you're not a DE rogue, you shouldn't be KOS to anything in UGuk. And if you're a DE rogue, you might not be KOS if you're a non-Inooruuk worshipper, haven't checked on this though. But if you're a DE rogue, what do you need a DE illusion mask for anyway?!)

Get someone in your party to IVU you, walk up to the ghoul assasin's room.

Get your main on, clear the room until the assasin dies.

Get your bard or rogue back on, loot the mask (as soon as the corpse is open to all).

Die. Shouldn't be too hard for an under 10 bard or rogue to do in LGuk!

Congratulations, free Tp back to your bind point with all your stuff, plus your new mask. All you lost was your memorized songs, have to re-memorize them. (Note you won't be able to use your illusion on the mask until level 15, though you can already equip it and get the stats from it.)

This is how my lvl 6 bard got a mask. Have to love newbie-gating... and the PoK portals...

My rogue is level 47 at this time. And a barbarian. And I still wear this mask. There are two primary reasons I do, as I'll explain later.

I first got this mask at level 11! Having never killed a froglok, getting to Lower Guk was not an issue. Once there, however, is when things got dicey. Hide/Sneak helped immensly of course, but at the same time, it provided a rather large obsticle. Unless your swimming is innordinately high (at level 11 at least), it's nearly impossible for a large race (i.e. barbarian or vah shir) to swim out of the water leading into the bedroom (death #1). So, I advise getting IVU, getting INTO the bedroom, then using Hide/Sneak from there to get to the Supply Room. Once in SR, wait patiently until the Assassin pops and let the resident group kill it. Then please (I don't think I can stress this enough) ASK if you may loot the mask. (During this time I added death #2 in getting this mask.) Getting out is relatively simple, Hide/Sneak to BR, jump in the water, and after getting out of the water, run for your life! (Death #3)

So, on to the reasons I still wear this mask.
1. +13 CHA and +7 Magic Resist! Very nice.
2. Inky form. As a large race this has become totally invalueble. If I'm in a dungeon, anywhere, for any reason, I activate the illusion. Being a small race has saved me from getting stuck in some rather nasty situations.

And one more point, the Mines of Nurga. Swimming up the waterfall as a barbarian is nearly impossible with a Swimming skill less than 100.

I took my halfling rogue, Greazy (Xegony), in at 4th level to scout the Assasin room for my Bard for the mask. My swimming sucked, but I bummed a SoW in Rivervale before I went in. Used PoK books to take me to Ogguk book, then used H/S and traveled through Feerot and Innothule, Upper Guk, and into Lower Guk. SoW was still up when I reached Assasin room. No trouble getting out of the water. I did have my mage summon a couple of waterstones for me, and I was glad for it later, after the SoW dropped. I could not get out of the water to leave LGuk with H/S on without the SoW. I eventually gave up trying, turned it off, jumped out of the water, and was sent home the express route by a froglok knight. (But I got my mask, boy is my 47 bard jealous, heheh. Thanks Dominae and company!)

Carrying along a SoW potion for the journey back out would have been a good idea, and would probably give you enough speed to get out of the water with H/S on.

Another strategy is to stay hidden at the edge of the water, wait for a group to come in, and follow them to the Assasin room. They will most likely kill everything along the way, allowing you to turn off H/S and get out of the water once you reach the bedroom. If they stay a couple of hours, and only have one person in their group that needs the mask, you'll probably get a shot at it... if ur nice. But unless you're under 10th and can take the shortcut home by dying, it'd be a good idea to have either a SoW potion or an Invis Undead potion along to get out of the water when you want to leave. SoW potion is cheaper, and if you're a short-breathed race, the SoW will make you swim fast enough with H/S that you won't need a waterstone. If you use Invis Undead option, you may need a couple of waterstones if your swimming isn't great.

Greazy, Rogue 4 (now 9), Xegony server.

Don't quote me, but I think you need to have Master Swimming to H/S and still be able to get out of the water unseen in Lower Guk.

But like I said... don't quote me. I'll have to try it with my rogue (also a barbarian, as stated in my root post).

I have more trouble as a small race getting out of the water. I'm 61 now and still haven't bothered with this mask (I seem to the only rogue on Nameless not to have it lol). I use my other masks (iksar, erudite, half elf) since I have being a short halfling. It's nice to look people in the eye and not at their butt/crotch.

Ok. Mask of Deception. I personally got mine when i was level 18. before considering my epic, say my 30s, i thought oh why not and i continued to kill guard which wasnt so great for my faction, eventually i became KoS in darkelf or halfing form. Unfortunatly, it is not a simple task doing the rogue epic wihtout it seeing as how you have to pickpocket Tani N'Mar in neriack 3d gate, rogue trainer). They why i fixed it was the wine quest, im now ally to guards (inner and outer) and merchants. The only thing that still didn tlike me so much was the cleric guild. They dont care about your form so much as about your deity, i follow Bristlbane myself and i don ducious still but i dont care cause thats not koS, see more details on the wine quest here -----> https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=159

I have this on my rogue (Barbarian, 46, Agnostic) and I can get into Neriak, Oggok and Grobb with no problems. Please note, I have done nothing to adjust my faction either way.

I used to be able to go into the outpost in the Overthere... until I killed a few too many ogers in Timorous Deep.

The long and the short of it is, you can go anywhere a Dark Elf can, so long as you haven't messed with your faction.

That mainly depends on religion, and if you have ruinied your faction with any groups in there.

If you are agonistic, and have not ruined any factions, then you are fine. I would think brislebane would be ok too, but I do not know for sure. Tunare or similar good aligned gods may get you in trouble.

Bristlebane followers are safe, as well, because that deity is available to newbie DE Rogues, too.

Yes, you can, but beware... Illusions only raise your faction a little bit... there is still a possibility that you WILL be KoS to different factions in Neriak.
Some info on the mask

I got this mask just the other day as a lvl 33 rogue halfelf.
It is a fun toy to play with but thats all its good for.
Its nice for a bard because of the cha and the save isnt a bad thing either.
I lvl mainly in OT and I was hoping it would make me nonKOS in the outpost there, that is not the case, The guards see through illusions and they look for what religion you are, how they can tell by how you look is beyond me because I dont know about you but I dont go around yelling I WORSHIP BRISTLEBAIN!!!!.
Also the mask is easy to get at any lvl. the frogloks cant see through hide, even if they are dead. Only the ***. can see through hide/sneak. When you get into guk just shout and ask if ***/sup is camped and if it is ask if you can loot the mask and chances are you can because it rots most of the time. I got mine easy enough and I got a Light Burlap sack for free while I was at it, No complaints here.

If I failed to mention anything please reply to this post with more info, there is a very detailed map of Guk (lower and upper guk) at EQatlas.com
