Giant Fire Beetle Carapace

I was running through doing the old newbie armour quests on an alt -- yes, I know there's way better these days just in tutorial, but it amuses me to do these old school quests -- and all the zones these guys are listed for were empty of the Giant Fire Beetles. They were, however, full of wolves, lions, and the like. I tried killing a shiatload of wolves and think, based on the flimsiest of logic, managed to get one to spawn in a wooded area of Commonlands after killing a couple of bears that showed up.

Anyone recall what the spawn cycle is to get them to pop? Shadow wolves didn't seem to do it, but I think those may have spawned bears which may be the next spawn cycle. I was pretty tired by that point having made several trips to old world zones looking for these critters so wasn't really in the mood to keep killing critters for several cycles and getting nowhere.

Any suggestions welcome!

Though these may drop off of Giant Fire Beetles in West Karana, by most estimates, East Commons offers greater success. Also, for any tough drop, do not forget the vendors. That is where I bought mine in East Commons, in the inn at the zone border to West Commons.
