Im not sure if this is still an issue but I handed in 1k plat today with my section of shell and got the shield fine :)
Ansem and Snibberlot, You turn this into Bungre Crawcrusher along with 10,000 gold. There is a debate on wether you can use 1,000 plat insted of 10,000 gold. I port people to CS to do the yurn in all the time and some people who use plat are successful and some who do are not. Everyone who uses gold has been successful, so I sugest you get a str buff and Spririt/Scale of wolf and use gold.

I have also helped many do this quest. However I have not come across anyone who has had trouble using 1000 plat as opposed to 10,000 gold pieces.
Perhaps that issue has since been corrected.

Quarg Clawcursher (sp?) i believe i have done this many time do only 10,000pp unless you want to risk losing 1k just get a 54+ druid to port you and give you soe and u'll be fine with soe on it isn't that bad. its a bit faster than if you were walkin prob same as run 2 so you could probably out run some things not all
