I killed Black Dire with the help of friends when Luclin was the latest expansion out. I still keep these boots in the first slot of my inventory all these years later. 1 because clicky sow is useful and 2 because they are a momento to a wonderful journey I have had as a shaman.

"Always remember that when you became Heyokah, it was the passing of a noble, yet misguided being that allowed you to do so. You should hold a special place in your heart for him and what he was in life. To help you remember him, we will fashion this pelt into a pair of boots and give them to you. With every step you take, you must think on the Dire, else his death be in vain forever."

# Jan 02 2007 at 3:07 PM Rating: Decent I was venturing through Castle Mistmoore when I happened upon this over-grown mistwolf. I cleaned out the area around him using Pacify and med up for the battle with him, expecting a tough fight. Well, it was interesting for the most part... I dispatched him fairly easily to my surprise with only having to root and heal myself twice. He conned light blue to me at 57 so it's definitely do-able solo. Now knowing what the Black Dire pelt is for, I'm a lil bummed that I looted it with my pally. But easy enough for me that I plan to set up a kill week for all the shammies in my guild for the sole benefit of those who would enjoy a set of clicky SoW boots. As a side note, my resists were all around 140s and he only tapped me for no more than 12dmg at a time... his normal attacks did the most damage... resisted all other spells as well...hope what limited info provided helps...good hunting to you all!!

I have read all these post and will tell you all this, I got the boots for my Shammy when he was lvl 5, and had alot of ****** off Shammy in my guild. Thats right lvl 5, and here is how you do it.
Zone in invis and head to his spawn point, if he not up go kill Advisor and the 3 chicks he hangs with in that room. Invis back up and head back to Black Dire spawn point. Pull him to zone and zone out. wait 2 min and zone back in, only mob you will see is Black Dire, he will stay at zone line for a little while before pathing back. After zoning back in, wax him. Did it with my lvl 51 Warrior and a lvl 53 Shammy friend. Logged to Shammy and looted. Headed to RM did the piddly crap there, headed tp FP then OOT, then to NK, then we were off to EJ, did turn-in in EJ and got killed about 4 seconds after I got the Boots, Shammy friend gated out we met back up in EF and I had my clicky sparkle boots. But they do not work till LVL 9. was mad so I had to go out and kill some bears for an hour and get lvl 9.
That was along time ago though, and I have heard that it can be clicked lower than lvl 9 now, but not sure, going to get a friends lvl 1 Shammy the boots to see if this can be done.

Actually if you reread the post, you'll see that he invised to spawn point with his warrior. Note, that he also said he had a Shaman friend with him, that could have invised him, or he could have used cloudy potions. Also note, he said he logged on the lvl 5 shaman to loot the pelt, indicating that this was not the character he pulled the dire with. When I first read the post I thought he was saying that he invised in with the lvl 5 shaman as well, it became clear at the end of the post.

u guys are both idiots. he said specifically he did it with his 51 warrior and a 53 shammy friend, then logged his lvl 5 who was parked nearby to loot. Thats an awesome move and i say congrats for being able to pull this off so easy. Second how is it that getting these boots at his level is "no good really?" what a dumbass comment haha

I (56 Mage) couldve solo'd this lil' doggie... had 50 shaman friend cuz he needed boots... gave my pet plate armor and muzzle, gave his pet muzzle... i wanted his pet to absorb HT but he didnt attack and i got hit with it (so i got GHealed twice). Burnout, 33pt DS, alacrity, and a couple shammy stat buffs took him down easy, pulled single with malosi, shm landed slow on first cast, took 3 tried to get DOT landed, used 550hp heal on pet twice, shm GHealed my pet twice... i nuked a couple times with char, i was WAY overprepared for this fight... the dogs around him conned light blue, but as a HIE they were all apprehensive (not sure if race makes a diff)

Just wondering if i do this again and hand in the pelt can i trigger SOW for myself from inventory? This would be great but its probably like Cucible of Escape, so Dru and Wiz are the only ones who can trigger at all... thanks.

Took the Black Dire down the other day with the help of my guildies (57 Pally, 51 Tank, 53 Cleric). The Pally single pulled two of the Blood Wolves, and then brought the Black Dire out to meet his fate. The Dire resisted all of my spells (I'm a 44) with the exception of Togor's Insects. So he was slowed and the two melees had Alacrity on them - you do the math.

The Dire does have a lot of HP but can easily be handled as long as he is solo pulled. If you make the mistake of pulling all four Blood Wolves along with the Dire then I hope you camped a cleric at the zone!!!

It's self only. However the instant cast time is VERY nice, especially when you'rr being chased by baddies and can't offord to stop and refresh your sow.

Note also that you don't have to equip them to SoW yourself, you can use the effect from an inventory slot too.

I would actually be inclined to say the self-only restriction is a BENEFIT of these boots, rather than a detriment. A shaman has plenty of ways to sow his party mates. But these boots allow the shaman to use sow as a junk buff against dispellers. They also make it practical to travel using Scale of Wolf, since a surprise break of Scale can be recovered from with just a click.

well, i just made 34 and i was bored one day, so me and a friend of mine- 61 Warrior - decided to start my epic. i started the first 3 stages, and completed them without much diffuculty, then we zoned into MM to take out the dire. i buffed him, and he single pulled the dire to the zone. after the initial HT, the dire didnt really do to much. i didnt try to land anything on him, and just healed my friend- he went down in about 2 mins. no need for massive grps.

On my shaman this item has saved my life more then once. I normaly have spirit of cheetah memed when outdoors and I have a hot button to my boots. There has been times where I have eathier took a wrong turn or found a friend of what ever i was running from while i was under spirit of the cheetah's effect. If i had to stop to cast sow i would probbly be dead, however with these boots the moment i slow down from spirit of the cheetah i can get spirit of the wolf back without even having to stop! Truely a great item

Several months ago, my guild and a few friends went into MM to pull the Black Dire for his fur. We had two full groups and were able to pull the Dire with Harmony from my druid friend. From there, it was a very simply and complete spanking of the Black Dire.

I got the piece of fur, headed to EJ and got my boots. I simply love them.

The SoW is clickable even when running and at zero-mana cost. Nothing like never having to stop to cast SoW on yourself again from the spell you memorized.

The stats are not the best, but it really is a badge of honor to have them on.

what seems to be the one missing bit of information is the fact that these nice boots are a part of the shaman epic. It's usually everyones ultimate goal to complete the epic... at least those who game for the sake of gaming that is.
RE: Usable lvl
# Jun 05 2002 at 6:07 PM Rating: Default
Actually they are not JBoots, they are Spirit of Wolf boots, far superior, they have many stats including ac and wis. The reason a shaman, who already can cast sow, would want these is for when they are in a group where they do not have room to keep sow up for themselves because they need to have other spells at the ready. These are also insta-trigger you can use them while running so if you are being chased by a mob, no need to stop to cast sow. Sure beats paying 60k for a horse too.

I just got my pair last night. I noticed that the effect is clickable from your inventory slot. You DON'T have to wear them to cast SoW on yourself.

SO, I pose this question:

With the steps leading up to this fairly easy to do, has anyone ever tried to do the quest to this point that is NOT a shaman, and did you get the boots? My friend, a Barb warrior is going to try to do the shaman epic from start to here, and see if it works, unless someone has tried it and failed.

Please reply if you have any info on this, otherwise expect a post in a week or two with our results.

I would strongly suspect that, while it may be possible for another class to obtain these boots, that they could NOT be used from inventory by other classes.

It's with only a few exceptions (guise of the deciever, amulet of necropotence) that an item can be used from inventory by a class that cannot equip it. Most items, such as the Circlet of Shadow, Temple of Sol Ro clickie quests and pretty much everything released after Kunark, will tell you you're the wrong class no matter where they are when you click them.

That said, I haven't quested the boots with another class and I don't know for a fact that they can't be used in that way. Let me just say that I really, really, really, REALLY doubt it.

I would have to say no. This is part of the epic and each part requires more faction with true spirit which as i have seen so far can only be increased doing the epic. The lesser spirit will not talk to the non shamans to start the quest.

As a monk I have sneaked behind dog, said "I wish to know more" and got Tiny Gem. Also sneaked behind the NPC in North Freeport to hand in gem for faction. At least anyone with sneak doing this step many times will eventually get enough faction to do rest of quests.
True Spirit faction
# Nov 19 2002 at 4:43 PM Rating: Good
Illia's faction list for True Spirit doesn't quite tell the whole story. There ARE ways to raise True Spirit faction, aside from doing the Shaman Epic. True Spirit faction also increases during the "potion return" part of the Wizard Epic, for example, an I believe some expensive quest segment in Steamfront also raises True Spirit faction. I suspect you could get your faction up by doing these other things, but it would be VERY expensive. (I think both examples cost 1000pp or so).
There's also apparently the "log in and get the item before your faction falls from indifferent" trick, as well as an Enchanter's faction raising spells.
Lots of trouble to go through, but if a non-Shaman REALLY wanted the boots, I think they could get them. They couldn't WEAR them, but they COULD use them from an inventory slot.

Hey, they're better than JBoots, the effect lasts twice as long, and if you've over lvl 35, they're faster.

Actually, it apparently has been done (in part) by a Magician who got past most of the True Spirit faction problems by going invis (why a True Spirit can't see though invis is another subject for debate). He repeated the first part of the quest to get his True Spirit faction up too. Eventually, he got the boots, but couldn't equip them, so he gave them to his pet. *poof*

Now, you can't WEAR the boots if you're not a Shaman, but you CAN put the boots in an inventory slot and SoW yourself by clicking. This leads me to believe that a non-shaman who managed to overcome the faction problems COULD use the boots if he or she kept them in a General Inventory Slot. Has anyone tried this?

To start the quest you have to talk to a lesser spirit, which will tell you to get lost if you aren't a shaman. So,unfortunatly, you can't get these if you aren't a shaman.

In fact, an Enchanter can charm the Lesser Spirit, and you can get the gem from him that way.

I have helped many wizards fix their screwed up TrueSpirit faction (also needed for their epic) by doing this and having them repeat the start of the Shaman epic several times. So it probably is obtainable by non-Shamans (although I don't know anyone who's tried).

Some tips on the Black Dire.

I have yet to see him spawn on a set schedule as suggested on many sites. Only real chance you have is to kill the advisor or wait for another group to kill him.

Once he spawns, have your group gather at the zone and invis. Once ready, have the puller agro the Dire then run to zone. Once there, the Dire will not walk away, yet all the other mobs will. Have puller zone back in. You can buff and prepare for battle right beside the Dire since he cons kindly.

Dire will resist most spells. Only way to take him is to overpower him. Nothing special on the take down, he's just another mob...with about 10k hitpoints, a 550+ HT, and double attacks around 200.

Group I was in that accomplished this task?
1 45 Shaman (healed, used pet, nuked)
1 51 Shadowknight (HT, tank, used pet)
1 52 Druid (nuked, healed)
1 40 Druid (healed)
1 39 Ranger (tank)
So, no uber group is needed to kill him, just use the tactics above to get him by himself.

We killed the Black Dire last night after taking out the Advisor. Group helping with Epic included.

2 Groups about 4 or 5 in each
50 Shaman myself (Healed Buffed, used Pet)
51 Druid (Healed Buffed)
50 Druid (Healed Buffed)
44 Druid (Healed)
36 Druid (Healed)
48 Warrior (Tanked)
47 Warrior (Tanked
52 Warrior (Tanked)
51 Warrior (Tanked)
46 Ranger (Tanked)

Ranger used Harmony on all the wolves... 52 Warrior pulled Black Dire with Arrow to group. After a few failed attempts to snare by the Druids and few failed attempt to Malo/Slow by myself... we just healed the Tanks when necessary. 52 Warrior was taking most of the beating and none of the Tanks lost over a bubble of health.
Black Dire wolf went down fairly quick despite all the resists. Overpowering and brute force seemed to work best.

I did hear from the group I was in that a lvl 58 Shaman soloed the Black Dire Wolf with some difficulty.

We were able to take out the Black Dire with 1 group, and only one person was over 50.

53 Druid (Pulled, took HT)
45 Monk (Main Tank)
45 Ranger (Backup Tank)
45 Enchanter (DeBuff/Haste)
40 Shaman (DeBuff/DoT/Buff)
35 Cleric (Healed)

The Dire dropped much easier than expected. Only had to heal Monk once or twice with Superior heal from Cleric. My group spent half the day in Mistmoore collecting different pieces for multiple quests. The Black Dire was on the top of our list. With this one group, we owned the Zone. A majority of the time, we were the only players in the zone as well.

I did this last night. Wolf was killed at 8pm (I helped another shaman get it then) so around 12am my group showed up as he is on a rougly 4 hour spawn timer. We had:

55 Warrior
54 Warrior
53 Druid
51 Cleric
51 Shaman
50 Shaman - Me

Wolf didnt pop and we were wondering what was going on. We were about to go kill advisor to get him to spawn when we saw in /ooc "Assist me on an Advisor" from a lowbie raid going on. (Talk about timing - SWEET) Dire immedatly popped and Warrior single pulled him. I maloed, slowed, and then me and other shaman nuked, while tanks beat on it. Went down very quick =)

Advice about trying to kill Black dire. YOu need one realy good group of lvl 50+ or 2 good groups of 45+ any lower then that and your meat. tried Black dire at lvl 42 with peeps up to 46 in my gorup we were all dead in 45 sec flat. the Blood wolves he is with are very MR as is Black dire himself. so if your goin in with less then the above make sure you have a cleric for a rez youll need it trust me = )

We managed to take the Black Dire quite easily witha group of 40 to 45s. This is how we did it:

Monk 51 - Puller
Shaman 43
Ranger 44
Warrior 45
Druid 42

Monk was puller. Aggroed one blood wolf and pulled that and Dire. Monk FDed near us on ramp and Blood Wolf returned to pack. Dire stayed. Hit it with Togor's, sicced puppy then both myself (shaman) and Druid targeted Tank for heals and we simply powered the dire to the ground. Monk lost 1 bub of health and tank lost about 1 as well. Very easy really.

The trick is to get a monk to pull. If they are blue to your team then one and the Dire can be pulled easily. Then slow and let the tanks power it to the ground.

If you hit the Dire Wolf with Togor's Insects, you did good. When I went to do the Dire Wolf, I was level 52. I went with my brother who was a 56 Shadow Knight at the time and although it was a fairly close fight, we were successful. I wasted about 2 bubbles of mana trying to slow the Dire Wolf, then gave up and just healed my brother while he and my pet took the wolf out.
