worth it
# Oct 04 2005 at 3:37 PM Rating: Decent
For most new players this quest is worth it. I have done it many times. I have purchased all of the required items in pok, the beaks running me around 22plat with decent cha. The HQ cougarskins run 20-50plat normally on my server and I have only found them once on a vendor (were very cheap). On a bad day it costs 200p to make this ring. Still a decent deal imo.

Made the mistake of assuming PoK quests were all for high levels. My lvl 25 caster just got this nice item tonight - fast, too! Found a HQ cougar skin for sale on a gnome in an igloo in Iceclad. Forgot the cost, but it was low. Killed frogloks in Qeynos sewers (lvl 9? easy kills) - got undead tongues on the third spawn. Killed stonepeep cockatrices on the easy side of Overthere - got beak. Killed hoppers in shar val newbie zone - got eye.

Also have the mask from the magic pool quest. Both effects work together. That's faster casting and lower mana - I'm very happy I did these quests. Look into them. They're doable under level ten (you'll need to buy the beak and skin at least - don't pay high bazaar prices - talk a player into selling you one for a reasonable price ---- hq cougar skins are cheap if you find one on an npc merchant, but cockatrice beaks are over 30 pp on an npc merchant (so get one of those from someone hunting in OT - offer them 2 pp - heck, many players will just give u one if you tell them you're doing a quest). Good luck!

The fastest way to do this is prolly to hit the bazaar for all components. But if they are not there, here's a quick run for killing:

1) Go to the cat city and go down into the pit and get your tiny rockhopper eye. Skip everything down there and just kill the *young* rockhoppers till you get one (unless you're low enough level to get xp, then go nuts :)). To me this is just too easy to be worth buying off a vendor.

2) undead froggie tongues will drop off the lowbie undead froggies in the swamp. Failing that, go to Gukta (good) or Oggok (bad) and search the first few nearby vendors. A quick shout in Guk or L Guk can sometimes get you a free tongue too.

3) Go to OT portal and pound on cocatrices. A fast shout to the zone can also get you a beak - often for free. Failing that check the nearby vendors in OT or FV depending on faction.

4) The cougars are the hard part. They are still worth xp at lvl 30 or so. However the handy dandy gnome merchants (indiff to all I think) will often have your pelt.

THE MISSING PART:

Go to PoK - in a building very near the Erudin PoK stone (north end of zone), hail Curator Merri tell yer you need a collector's box. (You need an open inventory slot to put the box in.

6) Put your eye, tongue, cougar skin, and beak in the box and click combine.

7) Walk past Merri to the cat in the back of the same room (Holly Longtail) - give her the box - poof you have your ring.

For Sale????
# Jan 01 2004 at 11:55 AM Rating: Decent
This is just something that I have noticed. I do have one myself and I can't remember if it is a "NO DROP" item. If it is then how can it be for sale in the Bazaar? I do agree that this is a very easy quest to do and every bit of Mana Preservation is worth it. Therefore, I rate the quest very good and suggest that all casters should do it.

There are virtually no no-drop items on Firiona Vie. That's generally why you see "for sale" posts on no-drop stuff. (The ring sells for about 100-200 plat these days -- arguably MUCH cheaper to just buy the components, but hey, caveat emptor.) Sometimes the "for sale" post is an offer to multiquest the item, too.

All of you non-FV players should roll up a toon on FV just to check out the bazaar. You'll be astounded!

Until you get something better on the finger that is. This quest is hands down the easiest to do of all of the collection quests, and the items are typically for sale in the Bazaar for less than 50pp grand total, often less than 25pp GT in my experience. Every low level alt caster I have has one of these rings, and they are very nice up to around level 49, when they no longer help your higher end spells. Saving 10pct mana per cast may not seem like much, but if your druid casts a portal(300mana normally) 30mana is substantial, and this effect works on EVERY spell, barring only Complete Heal, which is moot since that is a 49 spell anyway.

I think he means the MQ, which would be figured by totalling up the cost of all the various components and then getting the total that way. On average, I'd say the ring components cost about 60pp, all told. Less if you can find nice people to simply give you all the stuff, like I was lucky enough to on Torvon.
Vallon Zek
# Jul 09 2003 at 9:43 AM Rating: Decent

Just completed this Quest on Vallon Zek, components cost me 80pp:
High Quality Cougarskin (50pp) from Bazaar trader
Cockatrice Beak (25pp) from Bazaar merchant
Undead Froglok Tongue (5pp) from Bazaar trader
Tiny Rockhopper Eye (drop) from Rockhopper in Pit at Shar Vahl.
Was more than I'd hoped to spend, but the Fine Antique Ring is worth way more than 80pp, so it's still an excellent Quest.

My level 1 necromancer was rather happy to have a mana preservation II item.

All items are vendor buyable, usually found on vendors in the PoK. Or, you can go to the areas identified in the post below this item's quest, and buy them there. Will be one of your most valued posessions, since it will cost you less than 10P to buy all the quest items, and is a mana reduction for up to level 44 spells. Not to mention, free mana and HPs.
Use the bazaar

I used the bazaar to get everything but the Tiny Rockhopper Eye, and spent 18pp. The young rockhopper in the pit at Shar Vahl drops the eye.
cAN YOU STACK THE PRESERVATION?
# Feb 27 2003 at 12:38 AM Rating: Decent
So my question is. If you have another item with mana preservation (not sure if there are any) would the two percentages add up? or would only one take effect?

No. Effects of the same family will NOT stack with each other. Meaning if you have Mana Pres. II and Mana Pres. I, the game will only consider the higher of the two, which would be II. You can stack different effects, like spell haste with mana preservation.
RE: cAN YOU STACK THE PRESERVATION?
# Apr 09 2003 at 8:37 PM Rating: Good
While this is what you would expect; I have this as well as a cougar claw earring(Mana Pres I) and the
earring is what is used for my lower level spells. Not that this really matters; they still don't stack.
RE: cAN YOU STACK THE PRESERVATION?
# Apr 18 2003 at 12:49 PM Rating: Default
Actually no. Mana preservation II is like all other focus effects of this type...It does all spells up to whatever level II stops at, including what would be covered by a mana preservation I item...you don't need more than one of these...I.E. when you get a mana preservation III item (if there is such a thing), you can sell the MP II item....
RE: cAN YOU STACK THE PRESERVATION?
# Aug 10 2003 at 9:44 AM Rating: Decent
That's true, but as the other person said...IF you have both, lower level spells seem to prefer to trigger the lower level focus

Is a ring that gives mana better than a ring that gives Int? Smiley: confused which would give me a greater benefit.

Example Ring of Frost has +3 Int vs this one with +20 mana, which is gonna let me get out one more nuke?

RE: hmmm
# Feb 16 2003 at 12:05 AM Rating: Decent
The benefits of a reduction of 10% in mana costs FAR outstrips almost any increase in available mana pool. If it was a +50 INT ring versus this.. then you might have to think about it. However as that is not the case, the Fine Antique ring will prove to be far superior in virtually every circumstance as far as maintaining your mana pool.
RE: hmmm
# Feb 14 2003 at 9:57 AM Rating: Default
At your level 3 INT is going to get you about 12 mana...so your ring gives you about 32 mana where this one gives you 20.

However, this ring gives you a 10 percent reduction in spell cost...so that nuke of yours that takes 200 mana now costs 180...and it works for every spell you have. Over a long hunting session this ring would save you MUCH more mana than what you gain from your ring.

i disagree slightly with the math, to the best of my knowledge you get about 1 mana per intelligence per 5 lvls
so lvl 1 would get only 20 mana with 100 intelligence and lvl 10 would get the about 200 at that lvl and if he added another 50 intelligence he would get 300 mana total, which is how i understand it works up until the soft cap of 200 intelligence
Worth it!

For anybody out there with about 30pp to spare, this quest is super-duper easy to do, *especially* since you need Planes of Power to do the quest anyway, giving you access to the portals in the Plane of Knowledge.

Anyone with the skills to adjust, or otherwise circumvent minor faction issues, will be able to do this quest in under an hour, for the most part. The reason is that all four of the required items are tradeable, and are also sold to merchants on a regular basis, so you can just run around and buy them. This generally only applies if the server (and certain zones) have been up for a while. Of course, you can always just go to the appropriate zones and acquire the items from their respective owners...

Tiny Rockhopper Eye: These drop on newbie rockhoppers in the pit around Shar Vahl. Take the book to Shar Vahl (drops you in Shadeweaver's Thicket), run into Shar Vahl, and look for the nearest merchant you can find. That will probably be the one that newbies sell all their junk loot to, and he will probably have at least one eye for sale for around 7 silver.

Undead Froglok Tongue: Take the book to Grobb (drops you in the middle of Innothule Swamp) and run almost directly north to get to South Ro; for the return trip, you might want to get the /location of the book in Innothule, because most of the swamp looks the same and without landmarks to guide you it may prove troublesome to find again. I've always gone to the dark elf merchants in South Ro (halflings are sneaky fellows, you know), but if you can't use those merchants, you can *probably* find them for sale at the erudite merchant in the corner of South Ro near Ortalius or the innkeeper in the Oasis of Marr (you're not the only person that can't use the dark elf merchants in South Ro, so go to the next nearest place to sell). Price is around 6-7 gold.

Cockatrice Beak: Firiona Vie or the outpost in the Overthere are probably the best places to look for these on merchants, or maybe even the iksar merchant in the Overthere near the zone to Warslik's Wood. These cost around 20pp on merchants though, so you may just want to get one from a bird or another player. Both locations have their own portals from New Tanaan, so they're pretty easy to get to.

High Quality Cougar Skin: These drop on the snow cougars in Iceclad Ocean, and *maybe* the cougars in Eastern Wastes, but I always go to the gnome pirate camp in Iceclad and look on the three merchants there, since they usually have every part and piece imagineable that drops on the cougars. I think they cost around 1-5 platinum, but I can't remember for sure. The HQ skins aren't nearly as common as the LQ skins, so you may need to kill cougars for a while, or ask other players in the area. The last time I did this quest, there weren't any HQ skins on the merchants, so I used Upheaval to kill about 12 cougars on the island all at once, and none of them dropped a HQ skin. When they all respawned, I did it again, and got 2 HQ skins from the pile of cougars. Luck comes in kinda handy on this one. Without other forms of magical transportation, this one will probably take the most time, since it's the furthest away from a Book of Knowledge; the closest books are West Freeport (a pretty long wait for the Icebreaker boat in Iceclad) and the Great Divide (directly north of the Luclin spires, next to a row of large boulders along the northern edge of the zone).

After a relatively short time of running around searching, you can go back to the museum in New Tanaan and get your collector's box, combine the animal parts inside, and hand them to Holly Longtail, the Vah Shir beastlord in the back of the room. She will give you this nifty little ring, and you will be happy to save thousands upon thousands of mana for the rest of your character's life! This ring really isn't bad for pure meleers either; 2ac 30hp is great for the small amount of work you have to put into this quest, and should suffice until you can obtain a better ring.
