My friend

http://www.magelo.com/eq_view_profile.html?num=648818

Tanks mobs like statue of rallos zek, vindi, the sleep walker, BoT nameds, and many others mobs just fine. He once did a Ldon adventure and needed less than 10 heals before we compelted it. Rangers were meant to do some tanking. And with good AAs, rangers will out tank warriors with out AAs, regardless of gear.

edit: this reply is in the wrong spot, oh well

Is it just me or is this almost incoherent? Perhaps it's the lack of punctuation?

What does raise them right mean? Youre dealing with strictly numbers and functions here. Not real life. Rangers were never meant to tank and they never will.

what are you smoking?? Ranger certainly CAN tank!

I have seen rangers tank, and they can tank well! ( mind you no where as good as a warrior) but they can tank! I have seen 2 tank WoS ( yes seperate occations)

so go back to your bong and finish playing WoW!
Rangers tanking

You may find this hard to believe, but my 44 Ranger tanks almost all the time, even with a plate-melee in the group. With the Luclin expansion, rangers get new buffs that can put a Ranger on par with a Warrior of the same level, as far as AC and ATK scores go. We may still not tank as well as a Warrior, but a well-balanced Ranger can tank effectively nonetheless.

The thing is, your Defense score accounts for roughtly half your total AC, and you can only build defense by having mobs try to hit you. Another often-overlooked thing is, having a high AGI score helps a great deal. It not only raises your AC a bit, it also helps to reduce the amount of damage you take per hit, regardless of AC.

Too many Rangers seem to get stuck in a rut...they either view themselves as pure archers and dont bother maxxing out their Defense skills, or think like a Warrior and worry only about AC and STR. Rangers also need to boost 5 stats in addition to AC/defense to be totally effective. A Ranger's prime stats are STR, STA, DEX, AGI, and to a lesser extent, WIS. Keep in mind that while boosting WIS gives you a bigger mana pool, it is of secondary importance compared to the other 4.

If you doubt any of this advice, I have over a year of slow, hard-earned experience with my main on Vazaelle, a 44 Ranger. I have put him to the test many times before, and I will gladly continue to put him to the test against any doubting melee of roughly the same level. To be fair, (obviously) no twinks allowed, and no 3rd-party buffs allowed. And, no, I will not bow-kite challengers unless you want a bow-kite battle.

This is not meant as a boast, but I have taken great pains to build a good Ranger, one that hopefully will help change people's opinions about all Rangers for the better. I for one am tired of being treated like a 2nd-class citizen. (you all know what I mean..."Group LF Tank"..."XX Ranger LFG"..."Sorry, we are only looking for warriors/pallies/SKs, mana-sponging rangers need not apply").

Um, Rangers can tank about as good as a wet paper bag. Try fighting mobs that don't hit like little girls and then see how well your Ranger tanks.

I wouldn't have a Ranger tank a big raid mob, but we've certainly had one tanking in Plane of Nightmare before. Surprised me, but worked fine.
Ivy Gloves

These gloves are resist gear. You don't have to wear then except in SOL B or fear plane. I recommend a pair of Rygorr gloves which are 12ac and stats. I now have a full suit of ivy which i will use for guild meetings and other get togethers. Off course for heavy duty tanking you want AC items.

I do have to agree w/ your post, but I have one major question, what in the hell are you doing heavy duty tanking as a ranger, I can understand if a zone is starved for warr, pally, or sks, but for the most part, I have hardly tanked, I have had to do so occasionally, but not since about 25. It just seems odd to me that a 49 ranger would be heavy duty tanking at any time.

I spend most of my time tanking with my lvl 29 ranger. When in a group, I'll tank unless there's someone better suited for it. Plus, I like soloing - with clarity & some arrows I can solo yellows with no down time. What could be more fun than running around SK, rooting avocets, filling them full of holes & blowing them up until they break root & then slashing them to bits?! I understand that as you get to higher lvls you need to let the tanks with more hp take the beatings, but at this lvl it's still do-able & fun.

Yeah... I dunno about 49 but up to maybe 35 at least tanking can work just fine, depending on the situation. Rangers might not have very good AC, but they have decent damage avoidance skills. I'm often amazed at just how much and can dodge and parry.
Save you some time...

I completed this quest for the sheer fact that i could say "I have completed all the Ivy Etched Quests!" Once i got these, i compared them to my Darkmail Gauntlets i got in EC for 40pp, Ivy Etched (11 AC, 7 Fire/Cold), Darkmail Gaunts (AC 10, 5 Dex, 50 Mana). I am sure you can see what i went with, the Dex and mana are much more appreciated than those saves...perhaps if they were 7 Dex and 7 svsMagic, i would change me mind.
