In original EQ, Iksars couldn't wear plate armor. Why couldn't they? Because they had an AC bonus from their scales that made up for it, was the idea.

Looted 3 of these recently having killed the Ghoul Lord five times for his scalp.

Ghoul Lord is located at 845, -1085, -204 in Lower Guk. He spawns on the throne in the dead end room with 2 other frogs.

The SSB tributes for 108 points in guild hall.
Guild hall merchant offers 61p and change for it.

My little warrior would have used one, but I went and made an Iksar (shrugs).
Still a great helm

This is still a great helm for us melee types. Though they tend to bit a rare in the Bazaar these days.

i have to say i actually like the helmet on my alternate, a 10 warrior Vah Shir. It has not eye holes as we have muzzles, but it gives an accent to the eyebrows making us look fierce, and it has 2 spirals on either side of the "sideburn" area...place...thing. yeah whatever. My helmet also is a silver with gold lining, so i don't know what you peeps mean by reds and browns. I say peeps, if you want the helmet to look good, make a kitty! :)P

...if you ask me, silver plate helms on vah shir don't look very good, but if it keeps you alive...

I agree with the silver plate not looking very good. Silver chain doesn't look so bad though. I like the look of the Loda Kai (dark blue chain) and Bronze (goldish plate) myself. However, the AC on this is nice as is the SvM. The HP may help me, but in a group I usually have enough in the way of buffs that 35 extra probably won't matter too much.

The Skull-shaped Barbute (SSB) is generally not worth the risk involved in aquiring it, as indicated by the list price. Even before the release of Kunark it had fallen out of favor with most players except as a decent item to twink with.

Despite that, it is still a viable helm. The one thing that saves it from total obscurity (IMO) is the +10 vs. Magic. The AC and extra HP are nothing to sneeze at, but by the time a character reaches the mid- to high-40's, any tank worth his or her salt will have something more appropriate to the class, or the task at hand (in the case of raids).

Just some pertinent input not regarding the look of the item.

Like what, exactly? As yet, I have yet to find a better pure tank helm. Only rare ones have higher AC. 35HP is great for a Warrior and the Sv Magic is perfect. I'm still using it in my 50s until my Thurg one drops for me.

I agree with warriorone. I used an SSB on my warrior until I finally got a helm of raldukan. Please do elaborate on what cheap, easily obtained alternatives there are to the SSB?

Have you seen the Halflings we have GLASSES were 4 eyes, if i were in the game RL i would jump my own ***. My opinoin is halfling helms are the worst we look like geeks, but thats just my 2cents....
#REDACTED, Posted: Jul 12 2002 at 12:07 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The only reason why I even created this "account" was to respond to this dumbass . Man you better becareful about that "lil four eyes / I want to jump my own ***" thing , not good . I wear glasses and man that just isn't very cool. I'm not threatening , harassing , or making terroristic threats , but, seriously I really would be careful, or as that senator ( can't remember his name right now , jus' a lil too much Yukon Jack , but i think it was Jesse Helms ) If the (supposed to be First lady , but insert dumbass's first name here) I wouldn't come to ( supposed to be one of the Carolina's , but insert Odessa , New York , here) unless I brought a body guard .

haha nice legal discalimer....

you pompus g*t. there are jokes about everything in life (blondes, glasses, etc), you gotta just learn not to take them all seriously.

and the thing about creating an account JUST to flame someone... im affraid he was right. you nerd.

end of flame :S. sorry my fiery defender and avenger both get irrate.

anyways this is a good item, and using the right class and tactics it is fairly easy to get (try a buffed up paladin+pacification).

also you should be able to find it cheap in the bazaar once in a while, and at low levels, yes 35hp is great! later on the AC and SV magic holds its own too.

I got 1 and it appears silver but I hae seen many others in different colors. Could I possibly exchange mine for a dark or black one? I'm on the Quellious server.

RE: Color
# Apr 13 2002 at 4:44 PM Rating: Decent
Many items have the same look and different color but they are all different types of helms. The Skull Shaped Barbute has the silver color where as the DarkForge Helm has a Rusted Brown color. Also there is a helm from ToV that is silver and gold. Basically if you see a helm that is the same graphic and a different color its more likely a different type of helm.

No, you can dye the color of your armor, so that the SSB will appear any color you want. You dye the slot though, not the armor its self.

On erudites it looks like the head of a Borg, or like Ming the Merciless from Buck Rodgers...

Ming the Merciless was Flash Gordon!
And its a helm, how could they look like Borgs

I can't believe Buck Rogers got mentioned and someone actually knew enough about Flash Gordon to correct em.. I never thought I would ever learn anything about either of them.. Maybe I'll get lucky and not retain this knowledge..

With Luclin coming out, all my concepts of how things looked have gone out the window. I know I am *not* happy with the way this looks on my DE SK. Formerly, it had a very cool, burnished-silver look, in the shape of a nice looking skull with small horns. Now it looks like I have some demented vase (pronounced "vahz", not "vayse") from the **Martian Limberger Dynasty** on my head. I honestly am not even sure that there are eye-holes in the danged thing!! It is multi-colored and looks wierd as all hell! WHAT is up with that?!?

Anybody have any details about the mob that drops this? Can a level 50 Paladin, with a level 50 Warrior, take him down? Thanks for any information.
RE: MOB
# Apr 03 2001 at 5:32 PM Rating: Default
I've seen level 30 monks soloing the King in Runnyeye. As a level 29 warrior, I killed the King with a 31 druid and a 24 shaman. He is guarded by 4 elite guards, which are all green or low blue to me at 29. A level 50 character could probaby solo the entire dungeon, including Borxx, no matter what class.

I solo broke and held the king and warlord rooms in RunnyEye with my war when he was 34. Borxx on the other hand was a bit of a problem. High blue eye; if I didn't have slam he would have cooked me good. Inferno shock is only fun when you're not on the recieving end. >8P

However, I've killed the goblin king who knows how many times (3 full suits of black iron, and tons of assorted extras pieces I gave away in zone because I ran out of room in my bank :P) and I've never seen or heard of him dropping the SSB. Pretty sure that's an error; as far as I know only the ghoul lord in Guk drops it.

RE: MOB
# Apr 15 2001 at 11:17 AM Rating: Decent
they should, but..
1-it's not like everyone goes on plane raids, or has went on enough to win a helm. geez, it's not like they grow on hate or fear trees (doh forgot what plane it drops in). you kill guys with a bunch of groups of 6, and there is no chance you are the only pally, and it is a rare drop, out of a bunch of stuff.

2-maybe they wanna do some small time farming in lguk along with exe stuff and whatever else drops in ***/sup (my memory's bad).
RE: MOB
# Feb 25 2001 at 1:28 AM Rating: Default
You probably could, but why bother camping when for 150 plat you can get it any day in greater faymart?
RE: MOB
# Mar 22 2001 at 3:08 AM Rating: Decent
2 level 50s could take the Goblin King in Runnyeye without breaking a sweat. However there's no way the two of you would stand a chance against the Ghoul Lord
