clicked over 1,000 times. fell asleep while doing it. 30 - 50 clicks a minute for 30 minutes.
edit: gave up. went to do another instance of Clearing a Path and 8 clicks after I zoned in I got the locket from it.

Edit: bought one for 20k in bazaar. gave to another toon. turned it in and started lcicking in dead hills right by archivist just like I did with the first one. in 6 clicks I has the rusted locket pop. so you never know.

So, this item is apparently why this Collection-like thing is actually a Quest. By having the items turn in through an NPC instead of vanishing, they can insert subquests like this one. There is no actual Task for this, but if you can work through it you can (apparently) fill in the optional checkbox in the Achievement. It's generated some threads over in the "Piecing Together History" section, but I'm treating this as the quest item it claims to be and giving it its own thread!
(Aside: I've always been a bit peeved that, by collecting an item, I become unable to view it easily! Why don't the Collection achievements include clickable links for the items you've collected, so you can actually examine your collections if you want?)
Anyway, when you turn in this item to Archivist Dominic Moore, instead of his usual "an excellent find indeed," responded with:
Archivist Dominic Moore opens the letter and reads it carefully. After a few moments, he nods and carefully folds it back into its envelope and hands it back to you. 'There is something special about this letter. I'm unsure what it is exactly, but perhaps you could find out.'
And I went, That's weird, but I read the letter again (since unlike in a collection I still had the item!) and noted I had indeed obtained it from the undead boss Marcelyn, poor dear. (I guess she moved on with her life, indeed.) So I thought perhaps I needed to find this Elrick person, but I could find none such, and ended up here wondering what to do with this letter. From the discussion I gleaned that repeatedly reading the letter would gradually reveal the hidden locket. I can see various people suggesting I can "skip the Identify" step and proceed, but I'd really like to understand how to get there.
I suppose this really belongs over at the Rusted Locket page, but I started here so I'll continue. How do I figure out what to do with the locket? I've tried casting Identify while holding it and while equipping it (both empty-handed and not), many many times, and see nothing exceptional. I've tried clicking it with various targets. Since it's placeable I've examined it visually. I gather there's some way, apparently involving Identify (I've tried both the AA and a clicky), to get the idea of using a brew barrel on the locket, but I haven't found it yet.
