Casters Meleeing?

No caster who could actually equip this item (level 51 or better) would be stupid or naive enough about EQ that they would think they could melee worth a damn. All of the posts in this thread claiming ENC and such are somehow anything but pathetic at melee combat are nonsense.

Meleeing for casters is a LAST RESORT. Sure, 32/32 is a phenomenal ratio. But it still won't make a casters melee output worthwhile enough that they should stand around swinging this instead of sitting their butt down and medding up between casts.

Casters weapon skills cap very low and they have low STR - therefore they have low ATK. Casters can't dual wield. Casters can't double attack.

Any caster, particularly one who is level 51 or better, who thinks they can do MORE damage meleeing than using their spells needs to pull their head (and their spell book) out of their rear end and think about making a melee class character if they want to fight that way.

hmm.... after i sos myself, and selfbuff my strength to 185.. and get tired of sitting around at fm constantly, i occasionally have been known to hit something a couple times.

course i'm just a weak chanter...

Yes in a group, casters shouldn't melee much if at all in most situations.

But not all casters require a group. Necros and mages don't need groups to get good experience. That being said, when we solo we let the pets and spells do most of the damage. But there is always that point with most mobs when it turns to run. That my friend is when we melee a lot.

Matter of fact, if a necro is fear kiting solo, I can see him/her meleeing quite a bit all the time, especially since they can heal themselves quite easily with lifetap spells.

Mages get this nifty little line of self regen spells. This allows me to time it so that I will run up and take about 2 bubbles of damage before they start to run, which after the fight by the time my mana is up to a good level to go again, my hp are full well before then.

Now, combine this staff with the Tolapumj's Robe's fat level of Haste I'm wearing and I'm quite the meleeing mage.

That's right, Tarquelian Tank Mage at your service...

Its not that I think i can do more melee dmg with this staff than with my spells (wizard), but at high lvls I find it quite amusing to beg a sos from the chanter in my group (or any other haste spell, but sos is manafree so...) and get off my but an melee a bit. I want to max out all my melee skills and for that, this staff is wonderfull. And its fun! Of course, I only do it in times when I have enough mana and the group is going well. And the more dmg the bette! I mean..ever point count..doesnt it? To use for stats? No way.

I couldn't agree more. Any caster worth his or her salt won't bother with melee when spells and mana can be used. Nor will they bother with a 2HB weapon like this when they can use 2 items with great stats instead (great as in roughly twice the benefit of using this plus resists in my case). Casters in melee = novelty and a bit of fun (which is good) but lets not delude ourselves into thinking we can handle mobs that con blue to us with melee when over level 51.

Personally I think a high level necro would whip all other pure casters in melee due to the ATK, STA, STR, AC buffs necros have together with proc'ing drains (vampiric embrace), damage shields (banshee aura) and added little extras like grim aura designed to make low level necros melee better. But then i'm biased and ever conscious of my right to express what is only an opinion ;P

Nothing changes the fact that this is a nice item - personally i'd hardly ever use it but it would sometimes be a laugh.

I am an enchanter and I melee. Now that that is over with, I will tell you why. Or more importantly when. Enchanters have an amazing spell line that fast casts stuns, just like a cleric does but(sadly)without damage or the horrendous re-cast time. But enchanters have to be in point blank area to make that work; read melee range. Why shouldn't I be swinging since I am already close enough to hit and be hit? This weapon would swing decent damage while I am stun locking that Necromancer/Wizard/Druid from eating the cleric's mana like candy? Or the Coterie Vampire that procs like a fiend on the warrior I can't talk out of tanking it. I debuff and DoT the victim to open and inbetween stuns, but running C2 or C3 means I am getting most of my mana back while fighting. Why shouldn't I take advantage of a little more damage? When the stuns aren't necessary, I sit on my backside like a good little caster and wait for when they are. I sometimes carry procing weapons to make the damage values go up to be more useful, but swinging occasional 60's with this would be just as much fun as a proc or two in combat. I have done 1100 damage in a long fight against a Goranga caster in ME with Procs and all, and he was quite red to me. The Cleric even jumped up to have some fun because it couldn't do anything and she was at FM. So, as the only pure caster class that cannot Nuke/DoT for incredible damage, but CAN cheaply stun lock a victim forever to save mana on heals, why NOT?

I too am an enchanter, and I too melee sometimes. People forget that enc nukes have a rediculous recast time, and quite often I don't really want to clog up my spell slots with 2 nukes. I hardly ever struggle for mana in xp groups, as is probably be the same with any enchanter, and meleeing can sometimes be an easy 400+ extra damage on a mob during the fight, that would otherwise be time spent doing nothing.

It all helps !
