The Buried Sea Guide
A guide to progression, keying, flagging, and access within The Buried Sea expansion.
The IsabeauDeep Within the Shissar SanctuaryInside a Temple in Katta CastrumThe Quarry in AtiikiSuncrest Isle

The Beginning:

  • The Buried Sea expansion was announced on January 12, 2007, and went live on February 13, 2007. The initial expansion announcement may be found here. The initial patch message may be found here.

What's Going On:

  • Katta Castrum was built to house the sickened leader of the Combine Loyalists, Tsaph Katta. It was once above water and connected to several areas housing Norrath's endangered races, the Shissar, Sphinx, and Kedge. Experiments on the Kedge triggered the wrath of the Ocean Lord, Prexus, who sunk the city into the ocean. While it sunk, the magic of a great artifact was used to protect the city and bring air to it.

Homes were built for the endangered races, but over the years those races became less satisfied with their surroundings and began to see the Loyalists as jailors. The Shissar were the most displeased and sought not only revenge, but wished to exact their vengeance. Using their magic and technology, they broke through to Katta Castrum and began to destroy it. The Loyalists have managed to defend the central area of the city, but fear they may lose it all soon. Not only the Shissar threaten them, but the artifact in their city has begun to weaken and the protective magic over the city is beginning to fail and water is seeping through.

What's New (Features):

  • Ship-to-Ship Combat
  • 60 new missions
    • Rewards for group missions scale based on how popular the given task is on your server. The more players do a particular task, the less doubloons/orux will be rewarded for it. The less players do a particular task, the more doubloons/orux will be rewarded for it. Rewards have been spotted as low as 25 and as high as 100.
  • Energeian Items (Powersources)
    • Only items from TBS with the stat called "Purity" can use the effect of a powersource.
    • When you equip a powersource, all such items you have equipped will automatically take the powersource's effect.
    • The "Purity" stat is a percentage. The item will pull x% of the powersource's stats as long as the powersource remains equipped.
      • Powersources weaken over time at a rate which depends on how many items are drawing power from the powersource. They can last a maximum 139 hours (only one item equipped) down to a minimum of 11 hours (10 items equipped).
    • Powersources for levels up to ~70 can be tradeskilled.
    • Powersources for higher levels can be found through the Combine Empire Merchants in Katta Castrum (same area of this map).
    • Group-level powersources are bought from Trader Vallarines using Orux. (??? Faction required)
    • Raid-level powersources are bought from Master Pokk using Phosphites. (Ally faction required.)
  • Fellowships
    • Like a "mini-guild" but exist in addition to guilds.
    • Maximum of nine players (though the manual says the max. is 6, in game it is apparently nine).
    • See the bestiary entry for Randall of the Fellows for detailed information about and how to set up Fellowships.
    • Randall, as well as vendor Fellows Wyllie and Byllie, are located in the building next to the Nexus Stone in the Plane of Knowledge.
  • Guild Banners
    • Guilds can create a unique Guild Banner from a large selection of symbols and colors.
    • Once a guild has three groups in a zone, an officer can plant a banner in that zone, allowing other guild members to teleport to it.
    • Teleport using the Guild Hall portal ("Splinter from a Guild Standard" for ~184pp).
    • Guild Banner vendors Rhondda and Sephorra can be found in the building next to the Nexus Stone in the Plane of Knowledge.
    • See the bestiary entry for Rhondda the Flagger for detailed information about Guild Banners and how to set them up.

Zones:

  • A list of zones in The Buried Sea can be found here.
  • Its animated ingame maps are among those found here.

Travel to the Buried Sea:

  • Katta Castrum is a destination in the Guild Hall portal.
  • The Barren Coast is entered through the eastern boundary of Toxxulia Forest.
  • Druids get portal spells for The Buried Sea (bought from Cyrillae Saltscout on the isle of Monkey Rock in the Buried Sea).
  • Wizards get portal spells for Katta Castrum (bought from Trader Thallynus in Katta Castrum).
  • Note that "The Buried Sea" is not just the title of the expansion; it's also a zone within the expansion.

Zones in The Buried Sea

  • Static Zones:
    • Barren Coast (50th-65th level; entered through Toxxulia Forest)
    • The Bured Sea (65th-75th level; buy a ticket from a Dockmaster and get on board a ship)
    • Katta Castrum (75th level; entered through the whirlpool in the middle of the Buried Sea)
    • Jewel of Atiiki (75th level; entered via a portal on the southern boundary of Katta Castrum)
    • Thalassius, the Coral Keep (75th level; entered via a portal on the eastern boundary of Katta Castrum)
    • Zhisza, the Shissar Sanctuary (75th level; entered via a portal on the northern boundary of Katta Castrum)
    • Silyssar, New Chelsire (75th level; entered through the caves in Zhisza)
    • Solteris, the Throne of Ro (75th level raid zone; entered how?)
  • Instanced Zones:
    • There are numerous instanced zones based off the Buried Sea: Jardel's Hook, Maiden's Grave, Deadbone Reef, Blacksail Folly, Suncrest Isle, Monkey Rock, and Redfeather Isle (instanced versions of the same-named islands in the static Buried Sea), as well as The Open Sea (an instanced zone for missions that take place on ships).
      • Chat with NPCs around the island of Jardel's Hook to get these missions.
    • There are also numerous instances involving Atiiki, Thalassius, Zhisza, and Silyssar.
      • Chat with NPCs in the temple area of Katta Castrum to get these missions.
    • Solteris raids are instanced.
      • (No information about how to obtain them at this time.)

Adventure Merchants in The Buried Sea

  • In order to buy items or spells from the adventure merchants in this expansion, you must have appropriate faction.
    • Certain items and spells will become available to you at indifferent faction. And certain things will become available at amiable, kindly, warmly, and ally.
  • There are two factions and four currencies. The factions are unrelated to one another. You can have positive faction with both.
  • Blacksail Smugglers (Doubloon)
    • Halon Griere is an adventure merchant located on the island of Jardel's Hook in The Buried Sea zone (location 390, 3240). He is the only vendor for the Blacksail Smugglers.
    • You can increase faction with him by completing solo and group missions for various quest NPCs found throughout the Barren Coast and Buried Sea zones.
    • The currency used to buy items and spells from Halon Griere is the Doubloon.
    • Doubloons can only be obtained by completing group missions. They are also droppable, so you may be able to obtain these from other players.
  • Combine Empire Merchants (Orux - group)
    • Vendors in Katta Castrum (NPC listing here) with the title "Trader" sell items and spells. These traders are located in the highlighted area of this map, and have subtitles under their names indicating who sells what.
    • You can increase faction with them by completing solo and group missions for various quest NPCs found in Katta Castrum.
    • The currency used to buy items and spells from these traders is the Orum ("Orux" for plural). Orux can only be obtained by completing group missions. They are also droppable, so you may be able to obtain these from other players.
  • Combine Empire Merchants (Phosphene and Phosphite - raid)
    • Vendors in Katta Castrum (NPC listing here) with the title "Master" also sell items and spells, and are found in the same area as the Traders, with subtitles under their names indicating who sells what.
    • They are on the same faction as the group vendors, so no need to worry about faction here (if you are buying items from these vendors, you are probably already ally).
    • The currency used to buy items and spells from these vendors is the Phosphene. Phosphenes are obtained by completing Solteris missions (raid missions).
    • Master Pokk is the only vendor who uses the currency called Phosphites. Phosphites drop from trash mobs in Solteris.

Progression Through The Buried Sea

  • The task arc for Solteris access begins with this task given by Prime Researcher Elnot Waymun in Katta Castrum.
  • While progressing through this task arc, you will also gain access to the locked zone Silyssar, New Chelsith.

Spells in The Buried Sea

  • Rank I spells are bought using Doubloons from Halon Griere, an adventure merchant located on the island of Jardel's Hook in The Buried Sea zone (location 390, 3240)
  • Rank II spells are bought using Orux (or "Orum") from Traders in Katta Castrum. These traders are located in the highlighted area of this map, and have subtitles under their names indicating who sells what.
  • Rank III spells are bought using Phosphenes from Masters in Katta Castrum. These vendors are located in the same area as the other Traders (the highlighted area of this map), and also have subtitles under their names indicating who sells which type of spells.

The armor classes have different minimum levels of who can use it and different levels of faction needed to buy it

min levels are
65 Smuggler's Energeiac Indif-kindly faction
65 Buccaneer's Energeiac Warmly-Ally
70 Citizen's Energeiac Indif-Warmly
75 Praetorian's Energeiac Ally

edit:
At level 77 or so I was able to get the faction to get the Praetorian's Energeiac armor. I got 2 or 3 pieces for my necro. The spell enchancement maxes out for Level 75 spells and degrades 5 percent per level past 75. That's not as bad as it sounds, the 30 percent degrades like this:

75 30 percent
76 28.5 percent
77 27 percent
78 25.5 percent
79 24 percent
80 22.5 percent

Moving from initial faction (which is -100 apprehensive) to allied (which is 1100 faction points) requires gaining 1200 faction points. If a mission awards both faction and orux, you gain 1 faction point for every 2 orux earned. So you need to earn about 2400 orux in order to gain enough faction to get to allied status with Combine Merchants. If some of the missions give an odd amount of orux the faction points award will be rounded DOWN so you may need to go 1 or 2 missions beyond this exact number to correct for the rounding.

It's a long haul. If you're at amiable now, you got a ways to go. The faction points work like this.

-2000 to -751, scowls
-750 to -501, threateningly
-500 to -101, dubious
-100 to -1, apprehensive
0 to 99, indifferent
100-499, amiably
500-749, kindly
750-1099, warmly
1100+, allied

I have read that when you choose the reward at the end of the mission, the window that shows faction and orux is showing what is in the Far Left window under Option X. When you choose a differant option X the list will change. So the Far Left window with Option X is the choice you are taking. You get what is listed in the Upper right window; so you get Both the faction and the Orux.

I tried and tried and tried to find these static zones buying all sorts of tickets and taking many boat rides. Conclusion?

Monkey Rock, Deadbone Reef and the other "islands" in the Buried Sea do not have stand alone static versions.

They all have instanced versions, otherwise, these islands are simply a part of the Buried Sea zone itself (meaning, each island in this zone has a name -- like Monkey Rock, etc. -- but it is not a static zone unto itself).

Banners are for guilds - you require 18 people in close proximity in the zone to be able to have an officer plant it.

Campfires are Fellowship - they allow you to use the item from the NPC in PoK to instantly teleport to an existing campfire. Campfires require 3 people in close proximity to create, but any member in the fellowship may create it.

In Plane of Knowledge, in the building next to the Nexus stone (left of it as you face north) you will find 5 NPC's who can assist you with these matters and special items for purchase to create special banners and campfires.

As to an in-depth write up, I can't say I have found one as yet. But beyond the above, there isn't very much else to know.

TBS armor comes with only 2 "visible" aug slots (type 7(8 for the raid sets) and type 13). however it contains more invisibible slots which it uses to "pull" stats from the current powersource you have equipped.

There are Many different powersources available in the game, and they all give or take different stats. the powersources have "hidden" stats which it then multiplies by the "purity" on the TBS armor, "pulling" a percentage of the stats from that powersource and boosting the TBS armor's stats.

Let's take this Citizen's Energeiac Silk Robe for example. It has a purity of 45. Now Let's say you want to use the "Ethereal" powersouce. as you can see here, these are the powersources stats. So in addition to the Robe's base stats it would pull 45% of the powersources stats into the chest as well, and there is also a type 7 aug slot for another regular aug.

the powersource would add these stats, when it's at full power (using an item with a purity of 45)
AC: 4
DEX: +8 CHA: +6 WIS: +11 INT: +6 AGI: +6 HP: -84 MANA: +67
SV FIRE: +6 SV DISEASE: -6 SV COLD: -13 SV MAGIC: +13 SV POISON: -6

so 210+67+50=327 silk robe , for an example of what you can make using the new TBS armor. And that is using the Weaker of the Katta armor sets, the tier 2 katta group armor would be 397 , if my math is right.

Who? there are adventure type merchants in the buried sea and in katta castrum .. halon griere in the buried sea, and you can use ctrl+f to find the merchants in katta.

what? the tbs armor, you know you want it

where? you have to do group missions to earn the faction and currency needed before you can see the items

when? whenever you can get groups .. the katta missions take place in zones that are equal in strength to valdeholm or frostcrpyt type mobs. the buried sea set of armor is bought with doubloons from group missions which are a lot easier, but the armor is not nearly as good as the katta set.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Other Stuff:
note: the powersources Decay, and weaken over time. they dont seem very exspensive though, and can be made via tradeskills (pottery) as well.

note: the powersources also have hidden procs on them, if you so choose to use a Energeiac weapon.

question: do the armor sets become more powerful the more items you have of that set? or not?

here is a list of the powersources and the stats the give.

I had stated in guild chat that the "Solo Missions" are not so "Solo". The respone to this was " They are not rely ment to be "Solo" its ment for you and a group to get same task/mission and get out there and do it together." I said then WHY on earth would they say "SOLO"?? beyond me, I feel this new exspansion is more for the High end player not for the Low Level, Low geared player. IF by some chance someone has found something for the lower level/geared player in TBS please correct me. I'm extreamly disapointed in the new exspansion and feel it was a waste of money on my behalf. Because there is nothing so far that I have found that I can solo in TBS. Waite there is one small section of beach that I can, but has nothing to do with faction.
Don't get me wrong I do like to group, BUT I also like to go solo.

When sony means solo it means you can get the mission by yourself. A group task would be comparable to ldons, dons, and other instances where you MUST have 3+ members of a group to get the task.

It does not mean at all however that u can do the mission solo. Just that you can get in from an npc without being in a group.

They are missions your get by yourself and you recieve missions by yourself these may also be active and completed while currently in a group mission/task. So its not so much that its solo just cant have more than one group mission at a time so they have to call them something and solo is what they chose. Also only took me about two to three missions to be indifferent hunt around figure out which missions get you quicker faction this isnt hard just have to multiple missions you can do at one time to speed up the process. It's not gonna be like DoN where it takes you months to be Ally. And at that the gear will come quick but try different missions the more you do the easier ones the less the reward.

I had to get over 200 orux to get to indiff and over 300 to get to amiable. I did some faction only quests in the middle but that should give you a rough idea of when you'll actually start seeing items on the vendors. Also, the vendors and task givers are on different factions. I'm still dubious to the quest givers.

Neg 3859, Neg2930 sold by Cyrillae Saltscout in the Buried Sea.

The druid port spells are available at the Druid Ring on Monkey Rock in TBS. The zephyr spell is included.

Please also know that the druid rings in buried sea is about a 30 second run to Katta. Druids can also choose to give their group SOE as a bonus for the port (:::shrug::: at least I do)

I can't pop into TBS without folks stopping me to ask for SOE everywhere I go.. suddenly it is VERY popular with the new expansion. I am not seeing' so many request in POK for SOW or SOE, now it's mostly just request for SOE. The wizzy potal puts you right in Katta, BTW. Druids... well it's the scenic route for us. Still it's faster than running from POK. :)

my biggest question consern faction for quests!

Rewards for group missions scale based on how popular the given task is on your server.

Will this effect Faction given also?

So the popularity is based on your server's usage of the event. Is there a way to tell quickly which ones are being over used?

The only way is to look at the reward of Doubloons or Orux for any given mission. 50 means the mission is essentially mid-range. A reward of more (up to 100 max) indicates a seldom chosen mission. A reward of less than 50 (to a low of 25) would indicate an over-used or popular mission.

I think this is wrong that is scales for EVERYBODY based upon the popularity of the missions on the server. What is the purpose behind this except to reduce farming of certain missions for exp/currency? If so the problem is it is penalizing EVERYBODY for a few farming easier missions repeatedly.

I understand it would be more difficult to code, but believe it should scale based upon the number of times YOU perform the mission personally. Let's say first time I complete reward is 100, and then it scales down 1 every time I repeat the mission until lowest of 25. This way if I'm farming an easier mission, I pay a penalty for repetition. FINE - I think that is a great idea!

But why should I be getting penalized because some groups/people boxing play 24x7 and repeat the same missions over and over? This is the whole reason I hated MM's when they were being exploited by AFK people doing 24x7 tag team sessions. Same goes for Dain missions currently.

If a mission is easy and I decide to keep repeating even though the reward gets reduced, that is my choice. But I feel it is wrong for everybody to get penalized for how other people play.

Flame or comment away - but this just pisses me off again as a casual player who now gets reduced rewards just because I'm actually taking the time to explore and wow << QUEST >> go figure instead of grind!

Couldn't agree more.

Another example of what should be v. what is.
The brillance of this game was hard fought to be preserved but that war was lost long ago. The age of the derisive childen sticking out their tongues has won the day. They have ruined their own lands and ruined mine.
And they wonder why I don't like getting over it.

The people that used to play this game were brilliant, sophisticated, entertaining and had an accute sense of humor. The "gamers" were a small minority. Now we have wannabe gamers who think they really are gamers and think that's how the game is supposed to be played as the majority. Wondering why they get bored grinding, wondering why they can't get a group, whining about what they don't have, or can't be given easily. And yet like the ghetto dweller who accepts murder - saying hey man get real it's a way of life. They are their own worst enemies yet can't see it.

I still play because I lived the golden age, and know what can be. Going to old haunts or running across someone from that era brings back the smiles and memories that are immortal and none can take away. Yep, I love a good pint of heady nostagia. And I can't find another game that has the guts to be as this one once was.

It's really uncanny sometimes how the populace mimic civilization - albeit unfortunately in this case. People that didn't live the greatness no longer even believe it ever existed. Just like how some tales tell of things fading into legend. And as horrible as so many major global decisions have been, there have been good implimentations along the way as well. But as long as marketing is calling the shots there will be no chance of greatness ever again I'm afraid.

Another plea in the forest...but as they say, is it heard if there is no one there to listen.... Of course on the other hand, I don't need to see the bear when I go into the forest and step in his dung to know with certainty he exists.
