Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I see a lot of other section on the site talking about dps. But i never really ever see it on the shaman section. Was wondering what the dps on a high end shaman is. Was also wondering what the ratio on the canni 2 aa which works off of your hitpoints and having a HoT going on you. With that can you spam nuke in raids and how long does the aa last.

I know i am not a uber 70 or high ended shammy, but I have heard and read the answers to this question before. We do get good dps at the high end of the game and the canni 2 aa is a good one but unless you have a cleric, Your HoT(except for one) makes it to where you can't move untill it finishes or you click it off(I think you can click it off I am not sure still havn't tried mine).

You dont really ever get good DPS acually, not compared to most of the other classes. At higher end you mostly buff, slow mobs and back up heal. You do get some cool spells to help melee increase their DPS though.Spells like spirit of panther and champion.

Shaman DPS will come from their DOT's (focii and aa's needed for decent DPS) and pet+Panther... I play a lv70 monk wearing anguish gear, and I know a shaman who can about tie my DPS

aside from low levels, nukes for shamans are jokes

the canni aa is often referred to as canni4 or mass canni. it's a single cast spell (not a buff).

on raids, you will be debuffing and backup healing. shaman usually only DPS in groups or when soloing.

Canni 5 (/bonk) is an instant 1066 mana for 1924 hps with a 3 minute refresh so you won't be chain-nuking with it. And like Arnach said, our nukes are a joke.

DPS really depends on the group and who gets to count the leopard/panther procs as theirs ;)

I was talking about the aa spiritual channeling i've always known it as the canni 2 aa. Sorry for any misdirections by not defining it well. Has anyone got it and does it convert well. I do appreciate feigned's reply about it but would like more info such as such and such spell costs this much mana and and with spiritual channeling going it uses such and such hp's instead. Appreciate all posts so far if i could get a little more info on spiritual channeling it would be highly helpful.

Yes the spritual channel AA is very handy to have especially on raids. When you go after a LONG fight raid mob you will run out of mana...pop Sprirutal channeling and have some HOT potions in yur potion belt and you are gtg for a long time....usually if I have C6 (along with Canni when I can ) I am FM by the time spritual channeling wears off. The conversion is NOT great you will use more HP than it would have cost mana but the HOT potions or a quick HOT cast on your self will keep you going. Just watch the HP otherwise you will get a free port to your bind point.

Question 1, regarding DPS, I cant answer accurately because DPS isnt really indicative for casters IMO. Damage done per mob is more indicative of your contribution, I feel. I dont have high end foci, but they are reasonable and you can do fairly decent damage. If you compare to similarly geared characters, youre never going to compete with the likes of Wizards, Necros, Rogues, but all damage done helps.

Question 2, about Spiritual Channeling.... its great. It combines well with Greater Rabid Bear to give you 4.5 mins of chain casting (with SCRM), throw in the odd HoT spell or potion if you overdo it.

Spamming nukes can be done for that time but wont be the best way to DPS. A combination of DoT stacking and nukes/rains would be the best bet.

Panther is decent dps (again I havent parsed) but dont rely on it solely. It's not _fantastic_ dps. Combine it with DoTs and/or nukes.

At lvl 70(and a few more spells to go) I use 3 HoTs, none of them snares you as the earlier ones do.

65 Breath of Trushar - (quiescence is also 65 spell but heals for less, no root on either of them)
Shaman epic 1.5 group HoT
Ancestral Aid (link is lvl 3) Group HoT(mgb-able)
The HoT I still need is Spiritual Serenity

Heals, HoTs, DoTs and DDs, all can be improved with AAs.

DPS: depends on what group you're in. Some times you can just DoT away, making a lot of DPS, other times you have to watch out for aggro. I've been in groups where I am the dps, and other groups that there's really no need to cast a DoT, because the mob goes down so fast. And yes, same level, same mobs, in exactly same spot, almost same classes, but a huge difference in skill and gear.

<<<<For exact calculations on dps, or advice on AAs, or gear look up or whatever shaman info you need, go to samanna.net (no www), if you can't find it there you can probably not find it anywhere.>>>>

Speaking of AAs, a very useful AA to get (along with many more of course) is Virulent Paralysis, knock back root. It's saved my life more times that I can count. Good for soloing as well.

I pull with malos, VP it, if mob summons I make sure to both have it slowed and have HoT on me, then cast usually about 4-5 DoTs, reaching more than 1600 damage per tick without AAs (Curse of Sisslak 578, Blood of Yoppa 450, Blood of Saryn 332, and Breath of Wunshi 223, not sure how much Nectar of Pain is, somewhere between Yoppa and Saryn I believe. Lots of DPS...

With VP3 the button refresh before root breaks, so I can just keep an eye on that button and refresh DoTs and VP until mob is dead. Or VP an inc add for your group, keep it rooted while you DoT both your tanks mob and your own. Be careful, because the add will surely come for you if root breaks. And don't waste all your mana, your group will primarily want you for slows and fast heals =)
