Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I play a 55th level Paladin normally. My brother has left the game and gave me his account with a 52nd level shaman. Where can I find some information on how to play him properly. Also if anyone has any recommendations on how to setup the spellbook would be great. He had everything setup by level. Any ideas or suggestions would be great.

I would highly suggest you get to level 55 ASAP. There are several reasons. One is you get you level 54 cannibalize 3 spell at 54. If you didnt do the level 39 canni2 spell this will make a major difference. At 55 you get a new pet , form of the great bear ( not used much if you have a horse/lizard which I also highly reccomend ). Also at 55 you get chloroblast a quick casting heal which while isnt a great primary heal may save your cleric or chanter in Tier 1 planes. At 56 you get a great DoT, Bnae of Nife and 50% haste spelll, celerity which since its a lower level chanter spell you can buy very cheap.

The spellls I had memmed at level 54-56 were 1) Superior heal/chloroblast 2) Regen of some form 3) Cannibalize 4-5 Buff slots ( usually haste and a HP buff ) 6)Malosini/Malosi 7 ) Root
8 ) Turgur's Insects.

Hopes this helps some.

An interesting challenge! A few suggestions.
1) group with a shammy of the same level. Duo, or try some shammy double act stuff with no cleric (works to some degree).
2) solo... find out your capacity. What you do when grouped will be different, but you need to know your potential.
3) ready shammy boards (eg shamans crucible). Lots of discussions about hp vs wis, weapon types and so on.
4) check what your group expects. You can do so many things.. slow, root, heal, buff, dot, pet, and (at times) bash.
5) shaman boards have many suggestions about spell sets. I have many (lowby buffs, IoS buff set, fight/heal role, pure caster fight set, and so on. I always have canni in 1, and gate in 8, but others play differently I know.
6) read alla to find out what your spells do. There are so many some shaman skip this, and keep buffin with HoS, failing to note how much better IoS plus stat buffs and talisman really is.
