Classes: The Shaman

Shamen - primitive power. The only magic using class of the barbarians, ogres and trolls, shamen get a variety of spells that combine aspects of most of the other magic using classes. This combination, along with the racial strength, means the class can be played in a variety of different ways.

What is the best way to develop and play your shaman? What spells and skills are the most and least useful? Can a shaman be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your shaman in a group?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Shaman and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

At level 14 you wont have manay of the shaman abilities that make us kings in the upper levels, but you have alot to work with.

First of all make sure that the group you are with has Melee buffs ( tanks only ) or everyone if you have the mana. Every bit of AC and Hps counts. Next make sure everyone is sowed so if things go bad you can run to a guard or zoneline to avoid deaths. It helps alot if everyone is bound in the same area ( you get Bind Affinity at 14 and SoW at 9 ).

In combat use your walking sleep to slow the opponents down some . Note this does NOT affect caster spells so use your bash key to interrupt spells as they are cast, dont just hit it everytime its available. This is only like a 20% slow at your level but its only 60 mana and may save a tank's life if the heal is not timed right. You can use your inner fire spell to heal and IIRC its better than your heal until you reach level 24. Your job basically is to heal/back-up heal, buf, SoW, and root mobs/ads until the party can deal with them. If I were you I would avoid caster mobs and stay in outdoor zonelines until you get more comfortable with your skills . Keep in mind that you can also melee well at 14 still as tanks do not get double attack and dual weild usually from 14-17, so try and get a good weapon and PRACTICE YOUR skills. All 5 of the schools of magic , offense, defense and 1hb/piercing should be maxed for your level . It gets VERY VERY hard and expensive at later levels to try and raise these skills if you neglect them early. Once you hit 20 the first damage caps come off I'd get a decent 2hb weapon to practice with, as if you become a solo shaman later in life only 2hb have enough damage potential to kill mobs quick.

Dont try to solo yet you need atleast a tank partner and maybe a druid or cleric healer to help you out.

Finally , from what Ive heard Paludal Caverns has the best XP in the game at your level you may want to go there but there are plenty of options ( except LDON groups need to be 20 to start there). Keep, in mind skill ups only happen when fighting blue-con or higher mobs ok. Make sure you take hits once in a while to keep yopur defense/AC skill up.

The spells I would have up at level 14 are ( in no particualr order ( Heal, SoW, gate, walking sleep, a few buff slots and root ). Hope this helps you some.
