Classes: The Druid

Druids - a powerful outdoor class. With the triple ability to heal, inflict direct damage and cast damage over time, druids are a popular solo class, as well as popular in a group. They are also a travelling class, given both sow and teleportation abilities.

How should you play your druid to make the best use of his abilities? What are the best solo strategies? How should the druid be played within a group? What spells are the most and least useful? What skills should you develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Druid and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Hi I was getting back into the game and I wanted to make a character that was good at soloing. I understand Druids fit the bill??

Anyway, what race do you think I should choose, and how should I assign bonus points? I don't really care about the individual pros and cons of each race, I just want to know what you guys think would be the strongest Druid in the long run.

Thanks

Almost any race of druid is going to do well, no matter what level you are. I chose the halfling race because druids DO get hit while soloing and halflings have the best AGI/STR combination. Soloing you will invarably fill up your packs with stuff you will later sell for Platinum. Little by little your weight may encumber you making you move slower. Having a high stregth/agility keeps you moving quickly even if somewhat encumbered. Agility also gives you a slight edge in damage avoidance and slightly better AC. Wood Elves have a high AGI but their stregth is much lower. I am still soloing at level 59 and doing well making experience and Money. When I created my druid I put my bonus points in Str and Wis. since I felt I would be soloing more than grouping. Good Luck on your new druid.

i picked halfling too but apparently the uber guidl on my server to apply you cant be a Halflimg Druid. /sigh but id never change if for the world 90% of the time im in wolf form anyway though. i could be wrong but only halflings get innate hide so that for me was mroe then worth it. plus higher base wis i beleive is more mana then post wis.

Persinally i think that halflings are the BEST. they are short and quick and if my memory serves, they have more wis. than all other druidic classes

Race makes no difference, as far as "being a better druid in the long run". There are some differences in starting stats, but my druid has his wisdom capped and all stats over 100 (most 150+) with just common pre-VT gear, most of it solo obtainable (elysians) or purchasable. Halflings get an exp bonus, so they level faster. Half elves have weak stats, and no cultural tailoring. Wood elves have infravision, and forage starts off at 50. Humans are about the same as half-elves.

Basically, which do you like the appearance of? In the end it won't really matter which you play, except for how your character looks.

There's other things to consider tahn starting stats for a druid.Halflings are a good choice, not only because of the reasons above, for example halfling tailors can make very nice backbacks (druids make the best tailors).Other races have benifits also, although some are clearly lacking if your goals are to become a tradeskiller.
At the higher levels your starting stats are negligable due to aa points, fine tuning your stats, and your gear will most likely max out the most important stats.I wish i had put more in stamina because thats seems to be the stat missing from my gear.

/agree with Naturewalker, I made the mistake of starting out short on wisdom. As far as yer decision on what class unless yer gonna be a big time trade skiller, go with what ye like the looks of. Yer gonna be with him/her a LONG time!

I disagree about the max Wisdom posts here. I started a Wood elf druid with about half my extra starting ability points into melee areas and have NEVER regretted it.

Wood elfs have lots of dex and can dodge pretty well. They gotta hit you to hurt you and I melee'd my druid up through level 18 with no problem at all. Around level 20 your weapon DPS won't knock down many mobs unless you fear kite and have lots of patience, so I reverted to the classic druid Dot/healer role in groups with one HUGE exception: If the mobs got out of control or a train hit the group, my superior defense/dodge abilities usually allowed me to stand my ground far better than wimpy necros that drop before the healer can get the spell off.

All this time I was obtaining equipment to boost my Wis up to max for each level (I didn't start tweaked) and the extra defense helped into the 30's as I started serious quad kiting. Quests like testament of vanieer are great for buffing stats.

Fast forward to grouping in the high 50's and my choice to be a Melee Druid never disappointed me. With KEI my wis is still maxed out, so much so that I have started to re-equip some items with emphaisis on Sv. Magic instead of Wis. A typical problem at these levels are tanks that have problems keeping aggro especially when I am casting dots that push 140 DPS. If the mob aggro's me I just stand my ground and hope the healer is worth his/her salt. I can stand toe to toe with a comperable leveled mob for 20-30 seconds with not much problem. The melee's in the group love it because they hate chasing a mob around a room towed by a panic'd caster.

(Note to casters: If you are facing a mob with attack on you get less damage than turning your back and running. I assume this is because dodge and defense factors are working and backstab adds are not.)

For these reasons I believe a Melee Druid has a large edge over the Necro as Top Gun solo class. My melee ability makes me more surviveable in extreme circumstances when crowd control goes to pot or the tank has trouble keeping aggro.

Race doesnt really matter because who cares who has 5 - 10 more starting wisdom? at the levels were you dont have max wisdom 10 more wisdom is like half a spell. the only LASTING advantage anyone has is halfling's exp bonus.
And i dont know what "uber guild" would refuse somone based on there race, but it couldnt be too "uber" because thats retarded...no top guilds care about peoples race.
First you should think what you want to look like, if you dont care at all pick halfling.

Other things people mention that dont matter:

Wood Elves Cultral Crafting - crafting is done for fun..not profet or use...the only time ive seen crafting become useful is tailoring...and it has to do with something like bags and quest items(which everyone can make)..not "uber gear". Chaisma ive seen doesnt matter worth jack when it comes to charming.
Humans: There are a million ways to fix poor vision...try the level 5 spell dance of fire flies to start out...not ro mention Ornate Helms Time Helms and a half million other items give ultra vison (better then any but dark elves)
Half-Elf: starting stats arent the best but its all about the person behind the druid...there are alot of half elf druids way more powerful and skilled then alot of halfling/wood elf druids ever could be...if you want to look like a half elf feel free.

The guild in question is Triton of Povar, which is an "uber" guild. As to why, I do not know. They simply do not like halfling druids.

Personally, I went with the WoodElf Druid... I chose this for no apparent reason. I just liked how they look (before new graphics), but I also chose them because in most fantasy stories they are attuned with nature and their surroundings... Just my 2cp... Hope this helps

IO think the best druid is either a Woodelf I have one on the PS2 version and the elves are the best ones. Halfilings dont get as much better stats as wood elfs do.

The best druid depends solely on each individual's preferrence on how they look......and NOTHING else.

Having the highest starting wisdom is only good as a newbie and you will more likely have lower secondary stats like STR, STA, AGI and DEX. If you have to select a race based on statistics, pick the race with good secondary stats. These numbers will be much harder to max compared to wisdom.
My opinion...
#19 Oct 27 2004 at 10:36 AM Rating: Decent
I chose Woodelves for the same reasons and agree. And for a starting city for a newbie (at the time), it was great. The only thing I can add that hasn't been covered so far is that it's GREAT to be able to see over the dead mob in front of you! 8)

Also, had no idea at the time that Halflings got bonus EXP. LOL

I am a lvl 40 human druid atm. He is a remake from a 29 human druid that was chewed up. I know from experience that the heal path is better than the damage path. I am aiming for the Wildling master class so i have stamina and wisdom. But to make the druid wanted in the group, you have to have alot of charisma. I dont care what you say but all the tanks like my healing. At lvl 40 im healin 480 to 511. My cha is maxed. And that isnt it. Im building cha maxes. The druids dont deal enuf damage to make it worth your time to build up str. That is totally stupid. Even with 150 str the druid wouldnt hit over 100 damage on anything that cons white to you. Plus the druid only hits once. DO NOT BUILD STRENGTH!!! If you want to deal damage i highly suggest building dexterity for better casting damage and go down the storm caller master class. Stamina is probably needed if your gonna solo or not. My base stats are 150sta and 200wis. These are the Wildling MC requirements. The rest goes to charisma.
Oh and a little tip, Only buy the resistance buff AoE with class mastery. When it comes time for a raid or just xpin, the tank should be the only person to get hit. But the AoE of your enemies will take their toll on ur allies. The resist buffs help alot. So only build the group resist. There is no need for the others. Save your cm points towards hp factors or other resistances. Wisdom is handy but dont over do it. Remember your still a healer and you want a heal thats worth braggin over.

Hands down,Halflings make the best druids if for no other reason than the fact that Halfings get a natural wisdom and XP bonus. It's that bonus that makes Halfing druids the best solo class. Some would argue Necros are better, but when you factor the wis bonus, all things being equal...The halfling druid will get to lvl 70 first.Add to that natural durability and innate run speed, and you have a toon thats tough to beat.Just my opinion though =)

I agree with Xaanru. It isn't so much the race (although I gotta admit short stuff halfers do have the advantage when it comes to wisdom), it's the skill of the player him/herself. I run a half-elf gal on E-Marr who gets along quite famously even with the penalties of being a halfbreed. What she lacks as far as stats, she makes up for by being one darn good soloer and healer. I rarely (note I did not say never) lose a tank in battle, especially when I have a Cleric or Shammy with me because I have learned how to work as a team player and never take the risk of waiting for my tanks to get down below 30% to heal like some do. Yes, it saps mana a little faster, but it saves alot of lives. Anyway, if you are good at playing this wonderful class, race does not matter. Just have fun and do your best.

CHA STR not important to a druid? To these people i suggest reapping as a ranja. other than the exp bonus or some trade skill race specific stuff go with what looks good and dont dump your points into wis its to easy to max with gear.

i agree just chose a race based on which one looks the best. with the aa's and gear nowadays when you reach the 50's your starting stats won't matter so much.

as for what stats i would put into i would go with strength and stamina. pick yourself up gear that has more hp and str and sta for your earlier life. for one it is considerably cheaper to buy gear with those enhancements than wisdom enhancements. also with the spells you receiver at the earlier levels your built better to do some melee than to sit back and cast. i spent most of my levels soloing and i soloed until 30 where i pretty much ran in and meleed the mob. i would have a regen on me, have a damage shield on and would let them whack at me for awhile. with hp gear enhancements i could easily take on any old world mob my level. the great thing about that is it keeps your defense skill maxed out. my defense skill is maxed out at 200 at level 65. my ac has always taken a huge boost from that. because of that i dont have to run away and i can do much better crowd control.

also people dont realize how much mana you can save. take an ldon situation for instance. i would go in with three people. a tank, me, and a beastlord (for slowing). i would pull and would always get extra mobs. i would snare and root them where i wanted and i would take some hits while doing so. not a big deal. now i get the one mob we want into the room where my group proceeds to hit it. i go in and cast a few dots and get the aggro from the tank and let it hit me for a bit. it takes me down to about 50% or so and i pull back and the mob goes back to the tank for aggro. i sit there and med back with my regen and im at 100% by the end of the fight. it saved me on at least on one heal spell if not a few (depending on the length of the fight) since while i was getting hit the tank healed up close to full from my regen and so probably ended the fight at about half health. i pull in the next mob do the same thing. lets me use dots instead of heals which means quicker kills which means more xp and faster ldon's.

basically what im saying is a druid that cant take a hit, is a worthless druid.
