Classes: The Monk

Monks - masters of hand to hand damage. The monk is a powerful fighting class. With their unique set of skills and need to keep their weight load down, monks are a very complex class to develop and play correctly.

What is the best way to develop your monk? Which skills should the monk concentrate on learning? What is the best fighting style for a monk? Can a monk be soloed, and if so how? How should a monk be played within a group? How can a monk best use his skills? What weapons and armor should you try to get for your monk?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Monk and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I've got a 51 Monk, and I'm looking for a few clicky effects. I'm not interested in breaking my bank over them, but what are a few good items that are (relatively) easy to get or inexpensive?

So far, all I've got is a skeleton illusion mask, the Sporali Advisor earring, and the TSS gate scepter. Any reccommendations would be good, and I'm not against parking my monk in an area I'll be killing with my mage and switching toons to loot.

EDIT: I'm looking for useful clickies. I've never really understood the idea of junk buffs, but I think my mask falls into that category. I suppose that'll change when/if I start raiding. Anything that gives a bonus to stats isn't a junk buff for someone that solos a lot and can't cast spells. I'm also looking for an ammo-summoning clicky, since the range on Throw Stone is usually less than the proximity agro range of mobs.

EDIT #2: I finished the Eypatch quest (you'll hate me for how quickly I did it) and I'm going after the wand in short order. The gauntlets look pretty cool, but I'm going to wind up giving myself Carpal Tunnel if I have to click or hotkey that thing every 18 seconds. Last time I checked, I can't hotkey the clickies, but I can right-click the item in a hotbar, true?

I'll be picking up a Fabled Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring this year - I would have last year if I had made the toon by then - provided Fabled Grachnist is spawning. With Fabled week in mind, are there any other Fabled clickies that I should look into? Jboots are cool and all, but if the stats aren't better than my boots, I'd rather they go to another toon, considering how they're going to be permacamped like always, and I can get 80% runspeed with AAs.

You didn't specify what you wanted to use the clickies for; junk buffs or for actual function. Some of each that come to mind are as follows:

Junk Buffs:
Lodizal Shell Boots- should be soloable with the Mage (edit- not Monk useable)

Shrunken Goblin Skull Earring- easily soloable

Some functional items:
Pegasus Feather Cloak- easy solo, but takes a lot of patience

Wand of Impeceptibility- soloable

Eyepatch of Plunder- soloable with monk except for Lodi's map piece, get the boots and the map all at once. This item is a must have for melee-DPS, IMHO. Warning: I spent two 12-hour days camped waiting for the damned Griffon to spawn, but it was worth it. I think...

Just good times:
Fisherman's Companion- buy at the Bazaar for 1k

Spyglass
- buy at the bazaar for 50pp

Some that you can just buy in the bazaar are the Anizok items.

Anizok's Minimizing device - clicky shrink, very useful in tight spaces

Anizok's maximizing device - clicky grow, much less useful, but fun in PoK

Anizok's Gauze press. - summon bandages, speed up healing for a monk who solos.

A Half-capacity gnomish vanishing device is also useful.

You can buy the items to make Gauntlets of Enlightenment in the bazaar, sometimes amazingly cheaply considering how good the clicky effect is.

Increase ATK by 40
Increase Attack Speed by 40%
Increase AC by 12

I think you have to be level 55 to get the quest that allows you to do the combine, but that's not so far off.

Ouch

It's 55 OR any single Plane of Justice Trial completed. (in otherwords, access to Storms, Valor, Torment)

It also happens to be the same effect as the click on our epic 1.0, but with about half the worn stats.

Ok, I found a couple more clickies to look into, but they both require some serious faction work, do exactly the same thing, and some of the faction quests require the same turn ins. The question I have about White Lotus Wrist Wraps and Grand Master's Wrist Wraps is, since I'm only doing one and the other parts of the armor set are entirely uninteresting to me, which of the two requires less faction work? Should I just farm in the Plane of Growth for a Silver Moon Wristwrap instead? I'm not bothering with the Kael wrist piece, since I've already murdered my faction there.

I can likely manage to get my monk parked wherever the leather wrist bit drops and murder things with my mage until it drops, so "ease" isn't really what I need, but "fast" is good.

EDIT: Thank you, Ekap. I'd seen that bag before and forgotten about it entirely. I managed to pick it and two Strange Green Metals up yesterday, and just snagged a couple shissar ulaks in the bazaar for 100pp apiece, so I'm good to go for killing snakes. Any other suggestions for clickies? The wand camp looks like it's going to be a pain, but I'm willing to give it a shot later on.

if i were you, for the summon throwing items i'd go with the dusty soriz workers pouch from temple of ssra
( https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=10563 )

easy camp, with IVU potions, easy to get there, and you can pick up a shrink wand in the deep if your lucky while your there. go to the deep, and zone into ssra that way (watch the elder thought horrors, they see invis), click an IVU and zone right in

the PoGrowth wrists and the kael ones are... not good =/

i slaughtered PoGrowth for like a week, got no drops... kael arena cleared 22 times, no wrists, went to SSRA had 3 PH's and then the named spawned and dropped it

to this day, i still use the pouch to pull CoA/demi (when not using my tss teir 2 BP clicky)

Actually, I did.

And I did actually pick up several pairs this year. The spawn time of the fabled mob was reduced to 6 minutes, and she almost always spawned. I was able to get 80 pairs of boots to drop the weekend I did it, so now all my toons have a pair.

I've also picked up the Wand of Imperceptibility that Gladestrider mentioned (and you'll all hate me for how quickly I got it), and the Dusty Soriz Worker Pouch, but I haven't bothered with the Levi cloak. I got one as my Mage (fr obvious reasons) and don't relish the idea of another endless, mindless camp. I'll get it eventually.

Anything with unlimited charges is something I'm willing to look into. Any new suggestions out there?

A Dusty Soriz Worker Pouch makes pulling a lot easier. I'd recommend trying to get one. The camp tends to...blow, but it's well worth it.

Found an excellent clicky earring to reccommend to others that are willing to invest the time in a 12-part chain quest, Glowing Green Silver Earring of Dragoste. I think I'll keep adding the clickies I find here for other people with the same questions I had.

The clicky seems to stack with all manner of Shammy love, and the earring is awesome for its reccommended and required level. If you've got a high level babysitter (especially if it's a Mage or a Wizard) you can probably knock this out in a weekend.

Pegasus cloak (yet to get this one, cuz the @#$%^ horse won't spawn)
Eyepatch of Plunder

For the monk,

This is fairly easy to get, and since monks don't get a pet, a +30 Fire Resist, +3 Damage Shield pet following you is pretty nice. What you do is go to Crescent Reach, get some friends to wait in The Steppes, and go to Warden Jenvar or something. He gives you a quest "Sweeping the Steppes: Goblins". You kill 30 goblins, a bear spawns, you get the bear and kill it, and hail the Warden. Can be done in 45mins-1 hour.
