Classes: The Monk

Monks - masters of hand to hand damage. The monk is a powerful fighting class. With their unique set of skills and need to keep their weight load down, monks are a very complex class to develop and play correctly.

What is the best way to develop your monk? Which skills should the monk concentrate on learning? What is the best fighting style for a monk? Can a monk be soloed, and if so how? How should a monk be played within a group? How can a monk best use his skills? What weapons and armor should you try to get for your monk?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Monk and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Monk or Shadowknight?

I like playing melee characters. I like grouping, but with my schedule, playing in 60-90 minute sessions is what I do most. So, I want to be able to solo fairly effeciently.

I'm thinking of starting a monk or a shadowknight and would probably twink him. Here's how I see it:

MONK
Can FD
Can FD pull
Can heal some with mend and potions
Great DPS

SHADOWKNIGHT
Can FD
Can FD and pet pull
Can heal some with lifetaps and potions
So-so DPS
Can fear kite
Some decent utility spells

Which do you think is the better solo class...

From 1-50?
From 50-65?
From 65-70 with 100 AA's
At 70 for grinding AA's?

Also, which class benefits more from Discs and AA's at higher levels?

Thanks,
Bruzza

personally its a matter of preferance.. you want a tank or a DPS..
and just to let you know.. FD pulling solo is a PITA lol
nowadays its prolly possible to solo both to 70, just prolly a bit easier w/ the SK due to higher hp, lifetaps, higher AC, backing off and letting pet tank for a few seconds, DOTs etc..

1-50 Monk wins hands-down, using a Fungi Tunic. SK is a little more interesting to play though, with the familiar and necro spell line. 1-50 is pretty easy twinked, nowdays, however. It almost doesn't matter what you are for those levels provided you have some twinkage.

Beyond that I couldn't tell you because I've never gotten either a SK or Monk over 50.

As a SK by main i can say that SK's can heal themselves almost as if there were a cleric in the group. with 2.0 effect + life taps that proc up to 8k often and proc life taps that proc 2k often SK's can heal themselves way more then monks and dont even need potions. As for dps, with 2.0 SK max hit is 1825 (crit) 700 non crit. So SK's do get a fair amount of dps with enough AA's. Not as much as monk's but monks are made for groups where SK's are maid for soloing. Just had to shed some light on the SK's out there =) to many people under rate them because there halfbreeds, but ask anyone, SK's are the master's of agro / can heal them selves / and fyi SK pets are only used to add dps on gimp mobs... there pets arn't strong enough to hold off much at all let alone give you time to take a breath.

If you want to tank, take the Shadowknight.

One note with the SK's & Necros FD ability - it is a spell. It takes a small amount of time to cast and there are some rare mobs you encounter which cast an AE Silence spell, which makes the FD for SK's and Necros impossible while the silence effect is up.

The Monks have an instant FD, unaffected by the silence AoE as it is an ability not a spell, decent ac and hp's and great dps. They make poor tanks as it is difficult for them to hold aggro.

I have Both a sk and a monk and over all the sk is the better puller and much better tank. But the Monk will out dps the sk ( not counting Ht or other discs ) just my 2 cents

The monk is a better puller, hands down. But pulling has been deprecated to the point where the tanks prefer to do it themselves or have bards race around and funnel many mobs at once into their maw. That said, SKs can do it all, tanking, snaring, life tapping, pulling, and massive dps. As a monk you will often only pull ahead of them on dps in extended burns (assuming equivalent AA, gear, player skill, etc.) and some of that is because you tend to die less than other melee classes -- but a boss mob can still take you from full life and low aggro to dead in an absent minded swipe.

??????????

I have no problem stealing aggro from tanks.

A well played monk has more of an issue with stealing aggro when they don't want to...

Hence FD to drop aggro back on the Tank.

...Just sayin'
