Classes: The Monk

Monks - masters of hand to hand damage. The monk is a powerful fighting class. With their unique set of skills and need to keep their weight load down, monks are a very complex class to develop and play correctly.

What is the best way to develop your monk? Which skills should the monk concentrate on learning? What is the best fighting style for a monk? Can a monk be soloed, and if so how? How should a monk be played within a group? How can a monk best use his skills? What weapons and armor should you try to get for your monk?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Monk and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

Any info would be helpful..

You are both correct...FD is a slow skill to increase (kinda like Rogue backstab) and setting up a FD and SIT/STAND hotkeys -- and pressing them as often as you can remember (like your MEND hotkey until Mend reaches 100) is a good way to build up your FD skill, while running or waiting or watching TV or whatever.

Also Coorsman, remember the basic formula for MOST monk skills is 5 x level + 5 (only difference that I am aware is Dual Wield). So, at level 21, you should have a skill level of 110 in most everything except Dual Wield (which has a formula of 7 x level + 5, I believe; yeah, that's kinda ugly but whatcha gonna do).

Note also that that 110 will be as high as you can get a skill (other than Dual Wield) at level 21, until you ding level 22, when the level-based "skill cap" will go up another 5 points to 115.

Hope this helps and I haven't told you something you already know. Hunt well, be safe.

I made a hotkey like so:

/doability 1-6 (whatever fd is)
/stand
/attack on

i do this so i can fd while i fight. I got my skill to over a hundred at lvl 20 in an after noon. Later i added my kick to the hotkey to make things easier and i leveled that fast as well.

Hope this helps!

It is slow. Put it to you this way, as soon as I put my initial training point in FD, I wenttoa nice quietplace, FD'd, and kept hitting FD until its skill value matched my level cap--from 18 to 90 or 95 fi I remember rightly--it took a little over 8 hours.

8 hours of laying in the same spot FDing.

However! This paid huge dividends. The next I logged on and went to Unrest--I solo'd the 1st floor w/no problems that FD couldn't solve. Got in a group as puller and was very successful.

I've since kept the skill up to level and can say that level 21, 24 are the two big sticking points where it seems like you can't FD enough to move the skill. Persistance persistance persistance.

Just thought I would add that you do NOT have to stand up to FD again. You can both FD for skill ups and chance at full memblur, if don't want to wait the 2 min, while fd and a good reason to do this is that at least you aren't sound spamming those around you. You can also practice Mend while FD so no need to stand up there. The only skill that you would need to stand up to practice with a FD training Hotkey is Intimidation.
