Classes: The Rogue

Rogues - Masters of Stealth. With a variety of completely unique skills, and a fighting style all their own, rogues can be one of the more difficult classes to learn to develop and play correctly.

How should you play your rogue to best take advantage of his strengths and weaknesses? What skills are the most useful, and what is the best way to use those skills? Can a rogue be soloed, and if so how? How should you play your rogue in a group? What equipment should you be searching for?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Rogue and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

What's the deal with Lock Picking?

Since I obtained the ability to pick locks, I have put training points into the skill, I think I must have put about 7 points training in there so far, yet when I go to befallen and try to pick the lock there it says I don't have sufficient skill, so I can't even practice it.

What's up with that?

all you have to do is go to PoT(Plane of Tranquility)when you are level 46 and when you zone in you will see a rotating book.Put your lockpicks on it and keep clicking it and it will keep saying you have succesfully picked the lock.keep doing this for about 5 to 10 minutes and you can get up to 200 at pick lock.it is very easy and takes very little time.I did this with my level 56 Rogue and got him to 200 hundred and pick lock.Good luck!

He just got lock pick, lol, he's a long way from Plane of Tranquility. Not to mention your pick lock maxes out before you're even old enough to go to PoTranq. I would never suggest waiting til you're old enough for PoTranq, the only time I would use that is if you were lazy in your early years and need to get it caught up. Otherwise, keep on top of it, especially with LDoN, you dont want to be the jag who gets the group killed because he's waiting til 47 to work on Pick Lock.

In the meantime, forget Befallen... it's way out in West Commonlands and takes forever to get to and back from. I would go to Paineel, it's right next to a PoK book and there are two places to work on pick lock. One is the stone for the elevator, down the right hand pass, the other is the underwater stone door to the hole. The latter lets you work on swimming if you have EB and work it right. Either way, these are the easiest places to work on pick lock early. Good luck.

What kind of Rogue would even try picking lock when they know they will get the whole group killed!that Rogue did not even say his level other than he was practicing at befallen.Pick lock I know is a Rogues main skill but other than LDoN's there was no other need for it to be used for me until I was higher. I find that the method I used made no difference to me;and either way i am still high at that skill. In my young Rogue days I was focusing on on my combat abilities like piercing,backstab,parry,disarm,dodge,riposte....
No Rogue is the same.I find that Rogues become very useful to in higher levels.Im happy how my Rogue has turned out so far;reguardles of when I decided to get his picklock alomst maxed out.No matter what way i decided to go I caught my Rogue up in a matter of minutes;thats all im trying to say.

First of all, the Plane of Tranquility didn't exist in 2001 when this post was first made... Second, everyone keeps reccomending Befallen, but the entrance to Paineel is safer, faster, and easier to get to. I've spent about 30 minutes total traning to 140 so far.

I havn't been around EQ very long, but given the graphics in the Hole and Paineel, it's my guess that they didn't exist in 2001, either, hehe. But yes, I second the reccomendation :)

What's the story with paineel's graphics, anyway? City has post-luclin graphics but it had to have existed in old world or else the warrens would be one hard place to get to, and ERU NEC/SHA would be homeless. Oh well.

The min skill on the befallen door is 11 so you have to have an 11 skill before you can try it. As it is i dont know of any door under 11. So just go to the trainer and put more points in lock pick.

After reading this post I headed out to that same spot in Paineel but I found I couldn't get above 30 even though my skill cap should have been 45. But what was nice is that I got from lvl 7 up to 30 in about 2-3 minutes.

So far, I've trained Silff to 200 using the Paineel entrance. Every now and then you'll hit a slump where you won't get a skill-up for what seems like an eternity. Oddly, I've never been able to train past 5 x my level in lockpicking however.

Not just LDoNs, there are many raids that can't be done without lockpick. And there are a few shortcuts that can be taken because of it.

As far as being lazy about not working on the skill until 46...well. These days it only takes a few days to get to 47.

So...

Forget Befallen-- you need 21 to even start. My favorite place to pick locks is panieel ( at the entrance of THE HOLE ( down the set of steps near the warrens ( left turn the hole right turn) you only need 1 point to start. My pick lock is now 195 and I am a 41-- could have been 200 but working on pick pocket over in black burrow ( becasue the the ones near ZO do not move all over zone)

Just go to Paineel and work on it there, it's simple and you can work on yer Hide-Sneak while doing it without worrying about something trying to kill you

Befallen used to be the place to go.......noob to 200 on the first door. I have made another rogue and tried the same approach and nothing.....they have had to nerf the door for noob lvls on lock picking.
Just my 2 cents

Hi,

Absolutely Paineel is the place to do lockpicking. 110 in 45 mins, what can I say, I'm slow. Notice though, while the Paineel entrance has been called completely safe, it isn't /completely/ safe. A Dark Elf in Paineel very occassionally takes a trip up on the elevator to take a look at The Hole. He is a high lvl (46?) and has no patience with good toons. Also check to see if there are any peeps in the zone, because once you start practicing, the elevator is nonfunc for anyone trying to get out of Paineel! :)

The best place is PoT(ranquility). I went last night. Started with a skill of 105. Left with it maxed at 210, and only took me like 20 mins.

Zone into PoT. There is a floating book on a table as soon as you zone in. The table can be picklocked, although it opens nothing. Sit there and chain click it until your skill maxes out. It is the BEST way to get your skill up.

Of course you have to be lvl46 to get into PoT.
