Classes: The Magician

Magicians - Dealers of damage. With the combination of a strong pet and the second best set of direct damage spells, magicians can deal out some serious damage.

What is the best way to develop and play a magician? What strategies work best for soloing your magician? How should a magician play in a group? What spells are the most and least effective? Which pets are the most effective, and when should you use one type over another? What skills should the magician try to develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Magician and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I had origanaly posted this on the necro forum, to me necro and mages are about the same soloing wise. But i know some of the strateges I used would not work for a mage--use your head on what to do in those cases.Feel free to comment. And please ignore any typos.

1-75 Dains, will make you a crappy toon but it can take you to 75.
Hotzones are always good for xp too.
1-10/12 FoB
10/12-14/17 Kurns
14-25 PC
17-25 PC
20-30 Caste Mistmoore
23-35 Blightfire Moors (not sure seeing as i do not have TSS yet but should get it soon, heard Blightfire was an awsome exp zone too.)
25-30 Netherbian Lair
23-25 Netherbian Lair
25-30 Dains (Awsome Exp at these levels, BUT BE WARNED, SKILLS DO NOT GO UP WHILE DOING DAINS!)
25-30 Unrest
30-40ish Dawnshroud Peaks (pull the zeniaks as they do not add, but you can generally solo most stuff out here, at 30 i was soloing reds and stuff, just heal pet and nuke mob once at 75% and once again at 25%, if you pull a runner, when i runs away nuke till it is dead.
30-40 OT(out by the ramp, i took my necro out towards the Oupost and would agro kite out by the mnts area/mountanous wall area, i would start the Scent line spells and would sick pet on mob(no tuant),then would snare and if was still on pet the boil blood line of spells.)
40-46/48 Echo Caverns (hard side)
35-40 Gunthak beach(been a whiel for me to go to Gunthak, think it is 35.)
40-46 Gunthak Beach(in the cave)
46-50 Dulak Harbor
50-64/65 Greigs End(try to find a group untill about 56ish)(is a really good aa spot when you can solo pretty well here)
65-70 Split Paw
70-75 I heard Icefall was good exp along with other TSS zones, Not sure about TSS zones, seeing as I do not have the Expansion yet--should get it in March.o ya i heard of another good TSS zone--Blightfire Moors i belive is what they are called.like lv range 23-35

EDIT: BTW, i updated this a little while ago on the necro guides, but I now have TSS. Blightfire is a really good xp spot and i am also adding the DSP spot now.

Edit: am posting GE aa update

Edit: I forgot to add some stuff here.

Well, hmmm..... Did I say they were the same? no, I said soloing wise they are about the same, like as in skill. Oh ya, I also said to change strategy to fit a mage soloing. Next time read more than the first sentence before you but a bad comment on it. And yes, I did see the compliment of the guide.

Necromancers and Magicians are not even close in the way they solo or even where they solo. Necromancers rule the outside zones and the undead. Magicians solo better indoors like Beastlords. Dungeons are their domain. Grouping wise, anyone can group anywhere. There is no comparison when they solo.

By no means is this meant as a negative feedback statement. However, as someone that has both a Magician and a Necro, I have to agree that there are too many differences between the classes to even compare them. In my experience and THE WAY I PLAY both classes, the necro is more an outside kiting class where as the mage is more DD. The places that were suggested was greatly appreciated, though if I wanted to lvl the mage up faster, I would look into the hotzones that are currently in place found here ----> https://everquest.allakhazam.com/hotzones.html

These are great due to the watchmaker quests in PoK ---> https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=4187 these give good items for starting toons and the items get better with each quest/zone as you go on.

As far as Dains, I agree with Feigned completely! Dains will get you to 75, but you will be severely lacking in the skills area and people will realize this when you try to group with them and you fizzle every time on even your most simplist of spells!

Go out, explore and have fun! Everyone plays their toons differently, you need to figure out how to play yours, your way!

I would probably hit the hot zones for leveling my mage (level 45 right now) if I were smart, but I like the TSS zones. I am killing the mesa spiders right now, and will move on when I make level 46. I try to keep what I am killing in the yellow con range. The spiders are now mostly either even, or dark blue cons. I think I am going to move on to the giants in that same zone. I imagine pretty soon, I will have to start grouping, but I am currently just duo'ing with my ranger.

While the hotzones can be really good experience, certain zones that are or may be hotzones in the future are either deathtraps (see: Dragon Necropolis), overpopulated (see: Wall of Slaughter), or difficult to impossible to solo at a level that would get you reasonable experience (again, Wall of Slaughter).

I think it's too soon to have ANY Omens content turned into a hotzone for a few different reasons. The first reason I mentioned above. Wall of Slaughter was overpopulated until at least Prophecy of Ro came out, and even as a hotzone, it sucks for experience above about 65-66. The watch bits make for a decent charm. Or it would be decent if it wasn't basically the same thing that drops off one of the trash named, and can be easily beaten out by a level 35 toon going after their TSS charm.

Dragon Necropolis is, as I said, a deathtrap. My Mage is no god, but with the number and variety of traps in that zone, even at 72 it was almost a death sentence if I triggered those damnable beetles. If I got really lucky, I could burn them down and be out of mana and seriously wounded. If I got lucky, I'd be able to gate. If things didn't go my way... I'd be ten million little red beetle footprints. Kill the spiders there until you have your watch pieces (if you want them) and your augment, then never speak of this place again. Risk versus reward, this place is a poor choice to solo.

Why do mages solo better indoors? I have a mage and I don't see the difference between in or out of-doors. Am I missing something? I use the same tactic. Sic pet, at 80% I start nuking or healing pet if needed. Indoors or outside it's the same.

Necros rock outdoors where they can kite mobs around. At 59, I was soloing in the steppes with my necro. Let's see you do that with a mage. The mobs (white-red) hit for 600+, your pet can't take the hits.

Now go inside where there is no room to kite. Necro pets arent good tanks, especially compared to an air or earth pet. A mage pet can tank inside where there is no room to kite. I easily solo in Droga with my 61 air pet, and it would be much harder for my necro to solo there.
