Classes: The Wizard

The Wizard - Master Nuker. The wizard's abilities are in direct damage spells and in individual and group teleportation.

What is the best way to develop and play a wizard? What strategies work best for soloing your wizard? How should a magician play in a group? What spells are the most and least effective? What skills should the wizard try to develop?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Wizard and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I am trying to decide if I want to keep my 34 necro, or start a wizzy. I have seen what wiz's can do, and I find it amazing. I also don't have any form of a transporting class, which I think would be fun. Here is what I am compareing;

Wiz:
- Big Nukes
- Transports
- Can quad. kite

Necro
- DoTs
- Kite
- Solo's in most places very well
- Can FD

I just don't know which to choose... I only have one character I could delete, and that would be my baby necro if I wanted to replace it with a wiz. I am interested in the class for their soloing abilities.. so if it's slow, I can solo. I just don't know how WELL wiz's can solo compared with a necro, despite the fact many people have said necros are the best soloing class.

HELP!!!.... If anyone can just shoot out some info. about these 2 classes, I am hoping it will help me decide if I want to keep necro and lvl it, or start a wiz... Thank you all =)

To answer the main question -
If you are looking to solo, Necro is definetily the class for you.

Wizards are more effective (IMO) in a group situation to add DPS than out kiting. However; I have seen some highly skilled wizards that can rip up some rather difficult zones solo.... while the emphasis is on highly skilled.

If you are going for a wizard as a solo class, you are going to have your work cut out for you.

I have both a necro and a wizard. I've solo'ed both of them pretty much since I created them. However, I have to agree. If you are looking for a solo'ing class it's a necro. I do like the wizard for the damage they can do, but a necro can do wicked damage too.

Interesting question; I wandered onto this board because I'm considering rolling a Wizard with the idea of leveling him up as a two-box companion for my Necromancer main. I've never played a Wizard above about level 20 before and was (and still am) pondering how difficult it will be, hunting mostly solo, to get him up within PL range for the Necro .

I'm not going to open the can of worms that any sort of “What class is best" at anything comment would provoke. Many people are very loyal to their favorite classes and rightfully get their feelings hurt when someone suggests another class is better than theirs. Particularly on a board dedicated to their class! I will say though that Necromancers are indeed a good solo class and quite a lot of fun to play (from my perspective, not a universal truth). I see Wizards soloing regularly in the same zones I solo the Necro in now. (Presumably most high level characters are pretty well skilled at their class by the time they are around 75.) However, I didn’t see that many Wizards in the zones I was hunting in while leveling the Necromancer up. This of course proves nothing, there are a lot of zones out there, but it led me here looking for info on lower/mid level soloing abilities.

I look forward to seeing any additional feedback here and any comments on mid-level (20-55) soloing would be appreciated on my end.

Well I'm gonna chime in too. I have both classes as well and I have to say that I am very impressed as to how well my wiz can solo. I started my nec first and she is level 36 now...but then I decided to try my hand at a wiz (this is my first one btw) and I already have her to 28. The strategy is different with a wiz but I believe they can solo just as effectively as necs. I do miss fear and FD but I haven't died yet with my wiz although I'm sure I will eventually. It's also easier when you hit 27 and get snare. But so far I have had a blast playing my wiz. If you play smart and have a little patience wiz's can solo with no problem.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hihi, I would like to add, that soloing at lvl75 with 10k+ manapool is piece of cake and require little skill, imho(but then again, I have played wizard as main always, so what I see as easy might be hard for others).

BUT if you want to solo all the way 1-75 you will find many gaps, where soloing will truely suxor and overall necro will be better. I would choose wizard anyway, because I am slack and like the transportation abilities. ;)

I played my wizard for 5 years, it depends on what you're looking to do. Unless you enjoy medding for every little thing, go with the necro.

Although this thread is a bit dated, I'd like to add a few things to it.

I play both a level 59 necro and a 53 wizard as of the time of this writing. I can honestly say that both classes are great fun, have many options, and ca ndo well in groups or solo. However, since this thread is about the nuance of solo-ability of the two classes, I'll break it down into my usual list.

Necromancer - PROS

1. More "get out of jail free" cards - feign death line, harmshield line.

2. Can fear opponents - this can prevent them from casting on you.

3. They get a nice pet - only magicians and beastlords have better pets for their level.

4. Get the lich line - greatly adds to their ability to recover mana - wizards only get harvest, which is obsolete past 50. Also, necro's can pump up their party's mana (at the cost of their own).

5. Necro's can heal themselves using their lifetaps and the leech line.

6. Necro's can heal party members using spells like shadowbond (that whole line of spells, actually).

7. Necro's can debuff an enemy (though not as well as a shaman or an enchanter).

8. Necro's have the ability to buff the party as they debuff the enemy as well.

9. An entire family of spells (dozens) that have everything to do with destroying, controlling, charming, calming, summoning, detecting, and hiding from...the undead. Not even clerics and paladins can match a necromancers affinity for the dead. Wait, that didn't come out right.

Necro, CONS

1. Very limited ability to teleport around - gate, levant, succor, shadowstep - that's about it.

2. Faction issues, due to evil class / evil deity.

3. Takes longer to kill an individual monster compared to a wizard. This can present its own set of problems, especially in PvP.

Wizard, PROS

1. Ability to port around to many places, even send a person on while you stay behind (translocate).

2. The ability to kill an enemy quickly - as long as your spells are not resisted or interrupted (high DPS).

3. The ability to snare without causing damage to a mob - this can really help in groups where mobs are mezzed.

4. In general, wizards are more in demand for groups, due to #1 and #2, above.

The above represents my conclusions of the two classes after playing both off and on for the last several years, but I repeat that both classes are very entertaining to play.

With the introduction of mercenaries you can solo any class if you are in an appropriate zone. I have tried over and over to play a necro and they just do not jive with my personality. They are a nice class and they do solo well. I really enjoy my SK, but the necro...not so much.

I have a wizard that I really enjoy. With practice and non-summoning mobs you should find soloing fairly easily. Transportation is a great value, but is the ability to succor that you will learn to enjoy. A FD necro can save himself, but an alert wizard with succor up can spare the group (or most of it at least).

If you are truely after big nukes a mage can land the bigger numbers. On the other hand a wiz can launch them faster and more efficiently.

In my opinion it is a matter of personality. Your necro is not so big that you could not level a new one back up if you do decide you don't like your new wizarn and then you will know for sure....or you could keep your necro and wonder for ever what could have been. Even better yet, make a newb wizard on a different server to sample the class. The only down side is if you decide to go with the wizard you will have to start all over again on your normal server.

Do what's fun for you! Good hunting and safe journies.
