Classes: The Ranger

Rangers - Master trackers. With the skills of both a fighter and a druid, plus some unique skills of their own, rangers can be very difficult to develop and have a number of different ways to be played.

What is the best way to play a ranger? Can a ranger be soloed, and if so how? How should you play a ranger within a group? What spells and skills are the most important for the ranger? How can you develop your ranger to be the most effective? What equipment and armor should your ranger be looking for?

Post your strategies on how to best play and develop the Ranger and read, rate and comment on what others have to say.

I used a Innard Strung Bone Bow which cost under 2kpp in the bazaar on EMarr server. I used this until I was given a Nightmarewood Compound Bow by a good friend. And now I am looking into getting a Stonewood Compound Bow. So you can see how you progress up to better bows.

I liked my Innard Strung Bone Bow a lot. It has nice damage/delay ratio, a few stats, and a little bit farther range than some comparable bows (170 range compared to 150).

But, no matter what bow you get, try to get something with a low delay until you get leveled to where you can fill your archery AA's. You won't really be needing to use your bow a lot unless it's to keep your skill up, pull, or the tank isn't keeping aggro very well. After your AA's are filled, you'll want to get something that can hit hard AND fast, like the Stonewood

Its not the best bow, but I am still using it at 47 (although looking at upgrading). I dont have a link, but it is the Gemmed Jeweled Guard Bow.

20 damage
28 delay
15 dex, 10 wis
Effect: Burning Arrow (combat)
Ranger Only

the damage is a little low on it, but it is a fast bow. 15 dex and 10 wis are also great stats considering it is your 2 most important as a ranger. Proc is a 120 damage fire spell (with a decent dex, as most rangers have, it procs fairly often) A recent patch upd the damage of the Burning Arrow spell, but not the proc (spell went from 120 damage to 182, but proc still does 120) Still 120 extra damage is nice. As I said, at 47 I am now upgrading, but this is a nice bow to use for a long time (if you can find one)

As added (and pointless) information, it is the only item in the game with that effect (except of course the actuall spell, which isnt really an item)

I suggest looking for the Blindeye bow....focus effect is plainsight, which has many times saved me a buff slot when running invis, no need for see invis, and i can keep one more buff on...
bow has decent stats and is fast...add an augment and boom you are set til level 62, and then you should have Endless quiver and archery mastery level 3 then you need to upgrade...that is my plan anyway.

I used the Gemmed Jeweled Guard Bow, until I was able to get a stonewood. Atm, I have a tempest...and have no plans to upgrade that soon (guild is dkp), I melee more than I bow anyways.

The gemmed is a great bow to use until you actually start getting some archery AA's; until then the damage you do with any bow is really inconsequential. Because of the speed it's a great trainer, and because it's Ranger-only it's not really a big demand item (and thus is often affordable). I think I used one until I could actually make an Eternal Tempest (which wasn't until my mid-40's). BTW, if you follow Karana, the Tempest is a great bow. I switched to a Blindeye at 55 because I got a really good deal on it, but for the most part I wouldnt reccomend paying 10-20k for a bow you'll only use for 6 levels. Because at 61, of course, you're going to want to get yourself a planar bow :)

hello... dont get the blind eye as it is required lvl 51... and cost about 8k on my server, lol... i too used the innard strung bone bow for a while..... lately the nightmarewood compound bows have been going pretty cheap and are a really good deal. I would use one of these until about lvl 51 in my opinion. they are good both solo and group because they dont break root but can also lower the ac etc of the mob. very good bow in my opiinion

No, it's actually 55. Even more reason not to get it unless you get a great deal (and 8k is actually getting to the low end of what they usually sell for).

IMO at 33 the most important thing is getting as low delay bow as you can reasonably afford without spending big bucks. Archery, as a Rangers main form of DPS, won't happen till level 59.
There is little sense in breaking the bank on a bow that primaly purpose till 59 is skill ups... better to spend that cash on the best melee weapons and armor you can afford.

Get the lowest delay reasonable bow. Lower delay means quicker skillups means more time spent doing true DPS.

I used this forever http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=5089...probably till level 45 when I just had to have a better bow.

Upgraded to this http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=13325 cause better damage and LOWER delay. Kept this till 53 when I broke down a bought a bazaar bargin at the time...

http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=16430 Only 1 more delay then Shissar but made me feel like a man (well as much as a hafling can feel like a man).

Upgraded to a http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=17297 at level 58 for when I dinged 59 and got EQ/AM2 (had all my points banked before i dinged 54).

Didnt get my Stonewood until 65. Eventually traded that for a Featherwood and picked up a Primordial for soloing. The difference is you can make money a lot easier at higher levels. No sense in paying a lot for bow upgrades. Bargin shop bazaar for fire sales... but keep in mind you are melee till EQ/AM3 and the only function of a bow if literally for skill ups, so low delay is the only real important thing till then. I'm not sure I would agree that one is melee only until EQ/AM3, which I have yet to see. There are times when root/rot seems a good strategy, and in that case a bow with a decent delay and maybe a modest haste item (My FQ probably helps, too) adds at least another 50 - 100 dmg every tick along with the DoTs.

I solo a lot, and one cannot panic what is not an animal, atleast with my equipment.

BTW, I like the BFT a lot. Bought one for 1K in my 20's and have used it ever since. Will go directly to Stonewood when I ding 61 (in a month or so) which will have to do me for a while.

I use the Gemmed Jeweled Guard Bow. It is only 20 DMG 28 DLY but has great stats for Rangers and 120pt proc. The low delay, with a fleeting quiver is very fast. I was having trouble getting my archery skill up until I got this bow. Now i kite or root and engage /autofire and now maxed out on skill. ( Fletching also lol) Great bow for skill-ups and stats and will probably stay with me till the end game when Archery AA's come into play.

It's difficult to imagine the difference the AA's are going to make, and you're right, you can actually kill using your strategy. The point is, that the root/shoot/rot technique is slow and costs more mana than you can sustain for long unless you're twinked to hell with mana regen items. Get your archery AA's and you'll mow that mob down in 1/4 of the time it took before, and since you'll only be casting roots and snares, will be able to sustain the kill rate for much longer (indefinately with KEI). It's a matter of efficiency, really, but you will also be able to take on much stronger mobs- at level 59 with all archery AA's, I was root-shooting murks in NC for 8 blue ticks AA exp per kill. Try that using root-rotting and no AA's ;)
